I honestly think we'll keep him. However, I also think it is essential that we have on-field success this season. Not just for keeping Walker, but also for Tippett later on. Remember that once Kurt's contract is up, the GC will have finished their second year and be hitting serious form. Ablett will be in his peak window, the kids will be around 20 years old and ready to take the next step...to be honest, I'm more worried about losing Tippett.

And we can get a trade for him. Instead of the AFL saying what his worth is. Dont forget they will have a real cap then and all these golden kids will want their cut.

Precisely. By the time it comes to that, they won't be able to afford Tippet. They had their chance, and Kurts answer was a fairly resounding "no".

Exactly. They've already got Ablett, by then they'll have up and coming versions of Judd and Riewoldt to fit in the salary cap as well. I'd say they'd be looking at offloading some of their other decent talents rather than taking on guys like Tippett.

don't agree. in 4 or 5 years when these guys come up for their 3rd contract extension - when its time to start really paying up; some guys will have blown out, and the old dudes will be coming off the cap.

they'll be fine imo.

Tippett at the end of his next contract will only be a year or 2 short of free agency, it won't only be GC with an eye on him.

mind you, he's likely overpaid on 2010 output, so he'll need to keep improving too.

Ablett, Brennan and maybe Brown will still be there and on reasonable coin, half of that will probably be under veteran's list concessions though because they're inaugural players. You're right in that some guys will blow up, some kids won't come on etc. but if even half of their first rounders - Swallow, Day, Bennell, Caddy, Prestia, Gorringe, Lynch and Tape - fulful their potential then that'll chew up a lot of salary cap in five years time.

Rischitelli, Harbrow, Krakouer will still be around and won't be eligible for veteran's listing (Rischitelli would be close I think). Additionally, assuming he's still playing AFL, GC will have to start paying Karmichael Hunt's colossal salary. He's not on the books yet.

I don't think the veterans attracted up on the coin, will necessarily be maintaining their wage.

as geoffa says, krakouer is prime pay cut territory. as will Ablett. Bock will be in a wheelchair by then.

besides if it gets too sticky the AFL will extend their salary cap concession.

Tippett was doing his usual weekly stint on 5AA this arvo, and Rowey said you're close to Tex, can you put pressure on him to stay.

After a bit of banter Tippett said that he and Tex get on really well both on and off the field and he thinks that Tex will stay.

Tippett said that Tex is the character of the club, and really enjoying himself there. He gave the example of Walker, after hearing Craig praising up Sloane the other day and saying that he thinks he will become an elite mid-fielder, building a shrine to Sloane on the front of Craigy's locker, covered with love hearts etc!! :D

Looks like Walker's relationship with Craig as told by his best mate Tippett doesn't match the bullshit in some of the posts in this thread, does it?

Tippett does a terrific job in his weekly segment. He's a fluent intelligent communicator who appears to be totally at comfort in this role representing the club.

He also sounded very confident that Walker will be staying. :thumbsu:

Yeah I heard the interview too. Tippo doesn't sound worried by the speculation of Tex leaving and did say he thinks he will stay (rather then saying he hopes he stays). Rowey also asked Tippo to bring Tex in with him next week which Tippo chuckled and said he would.

Loved the shrine story. The stories in the media about a Walker/Craigy rift are just speculation. Just like the myth of Walker not getting games. Depsite playing 18/22 last year.

Pure rubbish. Anyone see just near the end of the third quarter on Saturday Craigy and Walker talking just in front of the supporters to the left of the bench. Walker was hanging off his every word.

Fantastic story about the shrine.

Good to hear Tex pumps the life into the locker room. There's a fair few characters in there these days.

Heard the shrine story, was pure gold.

That has to put to rest the whole Craig/Walker rift. If they didn't like each other there is no way Tex would attempt something like that. Funny how all the negative Nellys are not to be found in this thread tonight.

Here I am.

Yes, it is great to hear stories like this.

A player who had already made up his mind that he was leaving would become insular and withdrawn. Not be the 'life of the party' in the changeroom.

It was also interesting to read in Macca's biography that he was jealous of the relationship the younger players have with Craig, how often they speak, exchange messages, get together for coffees etc. It certainly differs from the version of events set out in certain transcripts.

Players have to played for a team 10 years or a set amount of games for their team to qualify for the veterans list. So unless AFL has changed the veterans rule for Gold Cost and Greater Western Sydney it will be quite some time before they have players eligible for the veterans list.

just on the relationship point - Richie Douglas in the 2010 year book:

Neil is a great mentor and coach, and we've sat down and chatted a few times and he has always believed in me and my ability. As a player that is a big thing when the coach believes in you. That gave me the belief in myself that I'm good enough and hopefully i've repaid his faith this year.

you would hope to hear this about the coach

and interestingly, he also said:

I was on the fringe for a few years, and we trade these days so who knows what could have happened this year

so whether it's true or not there is a perception in the playing group that we trade so no more free rides

Really, he lost me when he took to his missus handbag. Am I correct when I recall he actually made his decision to leave just after that. Knowing throughout the 2010 season he would be leaving. This despite the club helping him with his legal issues.

Bock is not a dog for leaving, but the way he did it. I can understand leavinb because you know your body is nearly finished and at the end of your career you want to cash in. To be honest Bock leaving helps us out, we dont want a Chad Cornes. But be honest.

I think you may be taking some poetic licence here, Bock's issue was in the first half of the 2009 season so "just after that" is a long bow.

Also a perception that we didn't use to trade!

yes! and we know that Craig was opposed to it when he first took over - referred to it as akin to slavery IIRC - did we actively trade a player in before this year (as opposed to taking what we could get on the way out)?

NC came out of the old SANFL recruiting zone system - living in a Norwood share house with all the other country recruits
