I would like to clarify the Crows current recruitment team. From my understanding we have near league best talent in terms of recruiting staff. Our people include:

Fantasia - was perhaps harshly known as F*ck up Fantasia for a number of years but has recently seemingly come good. Perhaps the lack of early round draft picks cost him 97-03...

Beatson - big reputation. Did he recruit a number of the triple premiership Lions guns - Black , Power etc - or was that someone else??

Stewart - a renowned guru for spotting and developing players. We snatched him from Port Powers eyes 15 months ago...more of a development role these days but would certainly still have a say on potential draftees.

But what about Turnbull?????.....Waynes World brought me 'up to speed' a few months ago by insisting that he had joined the Pies. I couldnt find anything to support this but assume he has now left.

It still seems like Fantasia, Beatson and Stewart make a formidable line up of young talent expertise. Recruitment, along with development, will make all the difference for our club in yrs to come....as one of the dominant clubs in the league based on revenue, profits, supporter and corporate base amongst other things lets hope we can capitalise

ADELAIDE has boosted its Victorian scouting network by signing former Brisbane recruiting manager Kinnear Beatson.

Beatson, who spent 12 seasons with the all-conquering Lions, will be the Crows' first full-time recruiting officer based across the border.
"Kinnear brings some great networks and know-how to our group and he is highly regarded in footy circles for his knowledge in talent identification," Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia said yesterday.

"He played a key role at the Lions in finding many of the players involved in their three consecutive premierships."

Starting work next month, Beatson also was Carlton's under-19 assistant coach from 1988-91.

"I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to work with a professional organisation like the Adelaide Football Club," Beatson said.

"I'm looking forward to seeing another club's recruiting system in operation and providing additional support to the recruiting team."

Under AFL rules, Victoria is the only state in which players need not play for a state league club (eg SANFL) before they can be drafted.

As a result, the VFL, TAC Cup, colleges, public schools and country leagues all must be scoured to find the best talent available.

Therefore, Beatson will compliment Adelaide's existing team in Melbourne which includes former Hawthorn recruiting manager John Turnball, Rob and Daniel Reid, Gary Eckersall and Tony Fantasia.

"We've always had a strong operation in Victoria but when Kinnear became available we thought it was a great opportunity to extend that," Fantasia said.

"And by the time you average it all out, about 55 per cent of the draft actually comes out of Victoria."

The Advertiser reported yesterday that Turnbull was still with us.

No shortage of insight into the Melbourne based draftees with a team of 6 including Beatson. Beatson, Turnbull, Rob Reid, Daniel Reid, Gary Eckersall and Tony Fantasia. Hmmmm, I didnt realise we had 2 more Reids and another Fantasia working for us. Anyone know if they are related to John Reid and James Fantasia?

Does Stewart actually do any scouting work at the Crows?

Still....Fantasia, Turnbull and Beatson. Its the no.1 team in the league at the moment

I dont think he does any scouting, but he would definately be involved in interviewing the most likely prospects and internal discussion prior to drafting them. I think most of his time would be spent with the young lads already at the club.

If I change my name to SpringFantassia or SpringReid will I get a job at the AFC?

And that reason was???

Disapointing draft results.

I dont think that will really matter for you guys, Kin will bring a wealth of knowledge and networks to the crows. No doubt he knows his footy and talent Id and would be a more than handy acquisition. Although, I wouldnt go calling you recruiting team the best based on names, as I said, Beatson and Turnbull were both let go from their respective clubs due to poor performance.

I see what you're saying and I agree to a point

Beatson was let go by Brisbane if I recall not because of his ability with later picks (he has an amazing knack of being able to find a diamond in the rough) Brisbane were more disappointed with his ability to utilise earlier picks.

Good get for us IMO but I'd be telling him to find the kids no-one has heard of rather than the early deadset guns

Beatson was sacked by the lions for a reason.
TOA Sacked is a bit harsh

Could it be the club wanted a Queensland based Recruiting Manager not one based in Melbourne who may not have been prepared to move.

The new Brisbane Recruiting Manager is Queensland based - just a thought?

Well it was as good as sacked as a you can get.

Rave Slave was right, it was something about the poor use of early draft picks over the past few yrs. Spaanderman was the last glaring error, taken at pick 18 when many thought he shouldnt get drafted at all. It was quite a messy break up between he and the Lions IIRC, I dont think he wanted to go.

Yes I remember the commentary prior to that draft and Spaanderman was very much a surprise - I remember thinking at the time he didn't appear to fit the Leigh Mathews player mould??

He was a dead set plonker. Not even close to AFL standard. I was speaking to afew scouts and they were staggered he got drafted at all.
