Jonas in Crows' sights to replace Pyke
ANDREW CAPEL
September 30, 2006 12:15am

ADELAIDE is poised to target Sydney's Peter Jonas for the assistant coaching role vacated by Don Pyke.

Coach Neil Craig says the Crows will be pro-active and "head-hunt" a "quality person" for its third assistant coach's position rather than advertise like crosstown rival Port has done.
"We'll try to head-hunt someone," Craig said after midfield coach Pyke yesterday stepped down from the role to return to Perth to pursue "business and other interests".

"I think our club knows the industry well enough to know who is available and the qualities and skills the person needs to have and our network is good enough to go out and identify those people," Craig said.

South Australian Jonas, who guided Central District to its first SANFL flag in 2000 and is highly-respected for the work he has done at Sydney under Paul Roos, is believed to be high on Adelaide's most-wanted list. He is contracted to Sydney for another year but it is understood that if he wants to return home the Swans will not stand in his way.

Craig said the club officially had "no specific person in mind" but would leave no stone unturned to find the "appropriate person" to support him and assistants David Noble and Paul Hamilton.

"I'm looking for a person who can debate, who can question, is not full of football jargon, who can analyse, probably who has had some degree of coaching experience in his own right and is not afraid of change or the use of technology," he said.

Jonas fits the bill while the Crows also will look at who else is available at AFL, SANFL and VFL clubs.

Craig described the loss of Pyke - who fielded inquiries about the vacant St Kilda head coaching job and is now likely to fill a minor role with West Coast or Fremantle - as "disappointing", noting he had been "a great contributor and an important part of the coaching team".

Craig yesterday revealed:

BEN Hart's playing future is likely to be decided in the next few days.

The 32-year-old veteran, who wants another one-year contract, spoke at length with Craig yesterday about his plans. But Hart will only be at West Lakes next year if he can convince Craig he can handle the "physical side of the game and training loads we expect from our players".

RUCK coach Mick Redden would not be employed full-time to fast-track the development of young ruckmen Ivan Maric, John Meesen and Jonathon Griffin. "But we do need to make a decision if more (time) is needed," Craig said.

HE does not expect to make a play for an experienced ruckman such as West Coast's Michael Gardiner or Hawthorn's Peter Everitt to replace fallen lead ruckman Rhett Biglands.

"If I had to err to one side at the moment I'd say let's back those young kids in," Craig said.

NO delistings would be announced by the Crows until after the October 9-13 trade period.
If we can pinch Jonas I would be over the moon but judging by his interview on 5AA during the week, its very unlikely that he will leave Sydney until his contract expires.

I hope we get him because he would be a HUGE get and might fill us in on how Sydney are managing thier players and keeping the injury count low.

The one thing that interested me about that article was the difference in approach by ourselves and Port when looking for an assistant coach at the same time this year.

Craig says that we know who we want and we'll head-hunt them. Port Adelaide have advertised their's as you would any old position.

Perhaps they'll get an aplication from Joffa to fill the miniscule shoes left by McGuiness. ;) :p

Isn't that just about the exact reason why most on here were pissed off when Craig got the job? :)

most??... nothing like a seriously overdone exageration. I can almost 100% guarantee that Jonas will not be coming to the Crows next season.

Except the article's not accurate. Port headhunted and interviewed 3 applicants last week - Craig McRae among them. Then ran the newspaper ad to find if there was any interest from unexpected quarters.

There are some other good candidates around if Jonah does not want the job.

Brett Ratten - may be a good candidate -players liked him at Melbourne.

Blake Caracella - played under 3 coaches - Sheedy, Matthews and Malthouse - is interested in coaching.

Michael Voss - coach in waiting

Jason Ball - been at two sides with successful cultures

Justin Leppitsch -played under Leigh. Very impressive as a media operator.

Stuart Maxfield - another very impressive player who played under Roos.

Paul Williams - is keen to stay involved in football.

How is Jars rated as a coach? Or is he too much of a larrikin best left at SANFL? Sure seems to have got a lot out of his squad and seems to be an excellent game day tactician.

If Michael Voss retires, the club should grab him to replace Pyke. The respect & experience that this bloke would have around any club would be a huge asset especially as we give more game time to the younger players. This modfield appointment will be crucial to their development in the next couple of seasons.

I'd grab Williams out of that list mentioned before. Jonas would be great too.

I wouldn't be surprised though if someone out of left field got the position...

Most were pissed off that the job wasn't advertised in the papers?!
Not quite obviously.
Most were pissed off it was a fait accompli without really testing the waters to see who else might be interested in the job.
Different fish but still seafood.

Personally I fail to see why what Port are doing is stupid whereas what the Crows are doing is good.
To me they are just two different methods, in one you interview only those you know you are interested, in the other you interview only those you know are interested PLUS throw some transparency in it and allow others you may think are not interested (if there are any) to put in an application form.

Yes please. Jonas would be an awesome replacement for Pyke, i have a hell of a lot of respect for him.[/quote) But is Jonas the midfield coach? What job does he do in Sydney? He always gets glowing reports but do we need a midfield coach specifically? After the finals I think JArs could have a different answer.

*PAF, we interviewed a number of different people for the job. We spoke to Terry Wallace, and Rodney Eade and Shaun Rehn both had second interviews. Its not like Craig was appointed without even exploring other options. Now you can argue that those other interviews were done half arsed and there might be some claim to it.

Now this advertising business is quite laughable actually. This is a football environment and everyone in the football environment would know about the vacancies at every club. If someone hears that the position for an assistant coach is available at Port Adelaide, then if they are interested they will send their resume in whether they are head hunted or not.

These sort of things are done within the football industry. Advertising it in a national newspapers is quite laughable considering how football industry operates. If I had enough time on my hands I would prepare and application and send it in ust for the laughs. I am sure there will be plenty of dud applications arriving at Alberton which is just a waste of time.

Your club has been in the AFL since 1997 and they would know the ins and outs of the football world. Who is good, who is not, who is available, who is not?! This advertising in the newspapers just looks amateurish to me and this is not because its Port Adelaide. I would have said exactly the same thing if the Crows went down the same track.

I reckon Jars would be a good get but he was on 5AA the other day and he said that the time is not right for him and if the crows asked him now the answer would be no.

That's code for John Reid is still there.

Stiffy....maybe the club is happy to see what someone outside of football circles could bring to the table. From another sport maybe, someone that wouldnt usually apply because they think the club wouldnt be interested.

I dont see it as that big a deal.

It was a fait accompli and some of the interviews didn't even have all the interviewers turn up to them.

I do not see it as anything wrong, laughable or any other words/adjectives anyone would want to choose.
Transparent or at least seemingly transparent? Yes.

They would know who is seemingly available just the same as the Crows do and most likely are 99% sure of just who they will hire already, I'd be very surprised if they didn't know who they wanted.
