Crows V Collingwood Saturday Afternoon

Sick, because I was actually having to choose between a girl i kind of like and the Crows next weekend if it was Sat night.

She just didn't have a chance:o

Absolutely pathetic of the AFL to treat the SANFL with such disdain by scheduling the Crows final to clash with 3 SANFL games. What a joke :thumbsd:

I heard today that the SANFL may move games to Sunday if necessary; I guess they don't have a lot of choice with the AFL employing such narrow minded bully-boy tactics, but if they both end up on the same day I'll be voting with my feet and heading down to Brighton Road rather than putting more money into the AFL's coffers.

Saturday Afternoon is absolutley wrong against Collingwood. Terrible. Its like the AFL always wants us to play home finals on Sat arvo. We won't even get 50,000 in and we will be lucky to even get 40,000. Should be a night game so more crowd comes in. Melbourne based games really should be played during the day.

Has happened for the last few years - SANFL move the games to Sunday - not a big drama. If you would rather go to the bay for a round 23 local match against an insipid Norwood outfit - go for it and stop posting on this board - you are obviously not a true Crows supporter.

Saturday afternoons suck for Crows games. Very annoyed. Was hoping for Saturday night but oh what a surprise they give that to Sydney ... booo!!!!

Against the biggest drawcard in the AFL - I would be stunned if we didn't get over 50,000 to the game. All tickets will be purchased to attend as opposed to h&A matches which have a mixture of fair weather supporters and SANFL / AAMI members who are mainly port supporters.

U r dreaming! Even 45K would be a massive stretch.

Still, as you vaguely alluded to, a crowd that high would vindicate my labelling of the majority of Crows supporters as cowardly and spineless.

If they buy tickets to this final then where were they for Port's home showdown?

The SANFL fixture has been in place all year. Why should they be forced to move it? In 2006 the Crows final against Freo or West Coast clashed with the SANFL finals at Adelaide oval. It shouldn't be up to the SANFL to have to shift their games.

And don't tell me I'm not a true Crows supporter *******. You wouldn't have a clue

just confirmed

The Crows will kick off their finals campaign in the first elimination final against Collingwood on Saturday night at AAMI Stadium.

Only time next weekend I cannot attend as my son is playing finals in amateur league. Also country finals start so I'd be surprised if the attendance is more than 40,000 as Crows season ticket holders have shown a dislike to paying more to go to finals.
Why does the AFL always consider Sydney first. They should have had their game Saturday afternoon and ours Saturday evening ( and I bet Ch 10 would have preferred that )

St Kilda’s result bumped Adelaide to fifth place. The Crows will kick off their finals campaign in the first elimination final against Collingwood on Saturday night at AAMI Stadium.

North Melbourne will travel to play the Sydney Swans in the second elimination final at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

TWO SATURDAY NIGHT FINALS, CAN'T BE RIGHT.

I'd prefer the night game, thats for sure.

Sydney's crowds, membership and ratings have all been down this year. With a new team from Western Sydney supposed to be entering the comp soon we had no hope of getting the Saturday nite gig in preference to the AFL's pet project team.

I assume all this talk of our final being Sat nite is a furphy as AFL website says Sat afternoon.

HAWTHORN and the Western Bulldogs will kick off what the league is predicting will be an exhilarating 2008 Toyota AFL Finals Series.

The sides will meet in the second qualifying final at the MCG on Friday night.

St Kilda will play reigning premier Geelong in a qualifying final on Sunday afternoon after securing the double chance in the dying minutes of the home-and-away season.

The Saints needed to beat Essendon by close to 100 points, and kicked 7.6 to 0.1 in the final quarter at Telstra Dome on Sunday to seal a 108-point victory.

North Melbourne will travel to play the Sydney Swans in the second elimination final at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

With the make-up of the finals series decided in the final minutes on Sunday, AFL chief operations manager Gillon McLachlan believes a close and unpredictable contest is on the way.

"We started with a very different set of likely finals that we thought we was going to happen to what we ended up with," McLachlan said on afl.com.au on Sunday evening.

"St Kilda’s huge win today rounded it out, but it came down to the last game at 7pm on Sunday night.

"It's a very even competition, and I think it means that again it will be a great finals series.

"It's been a fantastic season, record attendances, very solid ratings, and a really competitive finals series coming up, so we're very pleased."

With finals football notoriously hard-fought, McLachlan said he wouldn't rule out any side pulling off upset results.

"With the prelim final last year, I don't think anyone expected Collingwood to get as close as they did," he said.

"In the end, they probably could have and should have won.

"They've had a good win over Geelong this year, so depending on how the match-ups play out, it's a different scenario.

"Hawthorn probably fancies themselves to beat [Geelong], so we'll see how it goes, but we're looking forward to it."

A furphy, also commonly spelled furfie, is Australian slang for a rumour, or an erroneous or improbable story.
The word is derived from water carts made by a company established by John Furphy: J. Furphy & Sons of Shepparton, Victoria. Many Furphy water carts were used to take water to Australian Army personnel during World War I. The carts, with "J. Furphy & Sons" written on their tanks, became popular as gathering places where soldiers could exchange gossip, rumours and fanciful tales -- much like today's water cooler discussion.
Another suggested explanation is that the rumbling of an approaching water cart sounded like the firing of artillery, thus causing a false alarm.
It is possible that the word was also influenced by John Furphy's equally prominent brother, the popular 19th century Australian author, Joseph Furphy (1843-1913). However, Joseph was generally published under the pseudonym "Tom Collins".

Joseph Furphy 1843-1912.

Scuttlebutt has a similar etymology, a scuttlebutt originally being a cask of drinking water on a ship.
