Cummins Overrated?

Another very solid captaincy performance against Pakistan. Bowled well too.

At the risk of looking silly as it may be common knowledge without me realizing it, but today I found out via a youtube video that he is missing the top of his right middle finger. Not a bad effort to do what he does with the ball given that hindrance.

Tony Iommi board. Turning a hindrance into a strength.

It seems that his 'form slump' was caused partially by exhaustion, personal issues and bowling to questionable plans. Here, he was as immaculate as ever.

Commentator 1. He was out for a while with injury too.

Commentator 2. Five and a half years.

Not quite as fundamental to bowling but I think Waqar only has nine fingers as well with no little finger on the right hand.

Still a beautiful bowler is Cummins. Has almost without being noticeable, lost a yard or two of pace but still bowls the proverbial ‘heavy ball’ and as meek as Pakistan’s performance looked at times yesterday there really wasn’t a lot they could do about some of their dismissals and Cummins’ delivery to Babar in particular: that was just class

Yup, bowled some absolute snorters, I don’t think any batter would’ve enjoyed facing him in those conditions with what he was sending down.

On Pakistan, I think they can take a lot from the first 3 days, and with the extra tour match hopefully they’ll surprise a few come Boxing Day.

That's nothing. Sobers lost two fingers.

Poor guy only has ten remaining.

What is this gag about Pat Cummins going woke that newscorp are forcing? They're the only dickheads who call him that.

When Cummins has been on song the last couple of years he hasn't always been rewarded for effort. A lot of his deliveries are just far too good to even get an edge. His economy rate most matches shows he is incredibly difficult to get runs off and I've no doubt the pressure he builds greatly aids the bowler at the other end.

He did have a poorer patch towards the end of the Ashes and early in the world cup, but I think often he's been our best bowler even when the stats themselves don't make that obvious.

Incredible amount from the IPL auction!

Is he worth that much to a T20 team? Or is a bit of dick waving on the part of the owners? Must admit I don't really follow the comp.

I suppose it also buys a dinner or two and photos with the great man.

Good luck to him.
IPL owners aren’t often the most analytical. Been many occasions where one good performance at the right time or the right opponent gets you a big contract (Cam Green as the prime example).

Most likely owners jumped on him and Starc because of the World Cup.

Which is odd because they both struggled a lot of the time and only Cummins came good for the final. I would've thought Travis Head would be the big, big bolter money earner.

Tough day to be a loser working at sky news. 😎
Go woke, retain the Ashes, win the World Test and ODI championship before landing a multi million dollar IPL contract doesn't have the same ring to it.

Outstanding bowler, and already one of Australia's greats in my estimation. Only behind McGrath in my lifetime.

Pretty middling captain. Good at keeping the team on task hence the win in Pakistan. Not good when it gets a bit chaotic (see the Indian tour and second half of the Ashes). In that respect, Smith was and is a better captain.

Also, the bowlers knew about the ball tampering. They did, and it is ridiculous to pretend they didn't. Just say nothing.

Good bloke. Still reject the woke stuff.

Looking forward to another four years or so of him at the top level.

What has Cummins said that is woke that you reject? Be specific please.
The Alinta Energy comments and his position in particular.

I disagree or have concerns with the climate orthodoxy. I also wonder if he considered the broader impact of these comments. Perhaps he would carry on as a well remunerated sportsman. What is the impact on the back-office staff? How is their salary paid?

Righto well if Pat's a good bloke, we can take him for his word that the bowlers knew nothing about the covert ball tampering masterplan concocted by Sand Paper Douche.

Smith as a captain is up there with Ganguly as a pant-shitting everybody-else-to-blame sook. Unsurprisingly neither led his country to any significant achievement, unlike 2x world championship captain Cummins.

Clarke definitely had answers when things got chaotic on the field. I can't ever recall Smith pulling things back from the brink.

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that Cummins is one of the all time great tacticians, which is why their Ashes tactics were so meticulous and largely set in stone. You could tell when people weren't properly clued in to the Ashes when they said "we have no plans" - we clearly had plans, they were just debatable whether they were the correct ones.

As for his bowling, he's probably just about locked himself into the first change bowler in an all time Australian XI. He's not just got a record that warrants it - of Australian bowlers with 150 test wickets he has the 6th lowest bowling average and two of those lower than him played prior to WWI when scores were significantly lower... Also bowling first change half of his career means we all know he doesn't need the new ball to perform.

Go on believing this despite all of the evidence that it was going on for ages. The whole team including the coach knew and supported it.

CA have successfully covered it up since.

Far closer to the reality is that only three of them took the blame.

Contrast the way each of them captained in India just this year.

Another example of not dealing with the chaos.

Bringing up deep point and bowling Murphy just a fraction more would not have taken a genius, and there was plenty of time between matches to reflect on these errors.

He had tactics with zero flexibility.

The evidence is clear that Smith, Warner and Bancroft are such bozos, they were guaranteed to get caught cheating as soon as they attempted it.

So the "it was going on for ages" horseshit makes about as much sense as your description of Cummins as "a good bloke... and also a liar who hung his teammates out to dry".
