The big news and trend this off season is the consistent resigning of talent who would be desired at other clubs, we havent had anyone stalling or playing the mid season or end of season tactics to hedge and try for a better deal or another club. This yells massive confidence inside the clubs walls with existing players and they are the ones who really know if there is real promise and culture building or just hot air from the PR department
I am sure the footy department is writing strong deals to get the players to commit but its worth the investment to pull the group in tight and give the team surety and longevity. Shaw, Matera, Lemmens etc have a big hill to climb this year and its up to them because there wont be any free rides due to lack of depth in 2017 so their future is in their hands which is how it should be
Gary is the only mercenary now and he doesnt need to have buy in to have a big year form wise he just needs to be healthy and left alone to prepare the way he does best, he will be outside the core group and culture though and cannot see him part of us after this year which is OK

Given that 2MP was telling people he was in no hurry to sign and then the very next week we find out he has signed tells me that maybe they may have already signed up a few blokes and are just drip feeding the signings out to the public to build the momentum throughout the off-season for maximum effect.

Wouldn't be surprised if Miller was in the room when 2MP signed his contract and he was there signing his at exactly the same time given how close that duo are.

Check the below link video at the 3:15 mark - surely at least 4 of the 5 have probably already signed extensions (maybe Scrimshaw as a Melbourne boy is holding out to see how things play out)

The deals would have to be pretty good deals for the players to be able to wrap up negotiations so quickly, especially given that players like 2MP and Ah Chee would back themselves to have good starts to the year extract maximum coin based on good performance.

Good to see the pressure on the older players who are in the gun - either lift or make way for the next wave of Clayton's gun recruits.

Ablett is a strange one. Previously said he would stay at the Suns until they won a premiership. If we make finals and even win a final this year it will be interesting to see if he bales given we would be set up for a run at a premiership tilt in 2018. I tend to agree with Thurls that the club has already moved on from him being a core player either in a off-field leadership capacity or as a player given his age and recent injury history. But on the flipside they couldn't afford to let him go this year given Prestia/JOM leaving and the last 2 years of performance as it would have created at least the perception of a crisis.

If they were saying Swallow is 'heart and soul' of the club I don't know what label to give Lynch and May as they are the blokes this club is built on now and who everyone is looking to for direction. If Lynch wins his 3rd B&F in a row he would have equaled Ablett's achievement. Previously I would have been inclined to call the B&F award the Gary Ablett medal given he was the inaguaral capatain and won the first 3 B&Fs and club's first Brownlow, but if Lynch becomes a one team player and has some team success as captain I would be more inclined to wait and name the award after him when he retires.

Everything coming out of the club is screaming that things have changed and that we as supporters should anticipate massive strides forward, although there is that little voice in your head saying that the club has never taken 'the step' to become a consistently good side, which requires confidence and reaffirmation that we are good enough to turn potential into results. It is exciting as supporters to think that after the last 2 years of sticking with the side through the dark times that we maybe about to see some blue skies and gain the respect of the footy world.

well we have made some very real strides forward and we are becoming a side with an identity at least of young men and some tough mature recruits but believe it or not we do need some good old fashioned luck with close wins and injuries to get some momentum and belief early in 2017 - I am a believer though

Thurls....you know that 'luck' thing you mentioned....so on the money! We've really had none! No close game wins, no come from behind snatches, and we've never really blown a team off the park...ever! If we've won, it's taken every flukking ounce of energy and playing to our limits to get it done...RED LINING....always seems to be such hard work!!! Not suggesting that winning games should be easy....but man, I'd just love us to be in absolute dominating control from the opening bounce one day...you know what I mean???

St Kilda last year was the closest game to an 'easy' win I can think of

Got ya :) We were pretty lucky in our first win. Come back from about 7 goals down and Westhoff missed a shot after the siren

There you go....our FIRST win...such a long time ago

Yes, the Saints match is the ONLY game I can recall where we totally OWNED a team last year (Perhaps FREO in the west also...)

The Freo game wasn't easy - I still remember Harbrow making diving saves on the goal line in the last quarter to keep them at arms length

The truth is win a few close games and other clubs start to get nervous. The Hawks do this all the time not because they're superior but because the other clubs start to look in the rearview mirror.

As we gain respect the clubs will start worry, at the moment we have no respect because we haven't earnt it. That's all about to change in 2017

GOLD Coast have begun negotiations with Jack Martin’s management to extend the young star’s contract with the Suns.

Martin’s manager Jason Dover met with the West Australian and the club on the Gold Coast earlier this week to discuss a new deal after opening talks with Suns list manager Scott Clayton at the 2016 draft in November.

Dover was also given a tour of the club’s new $22 million training and administration facilities due to open in the coming month.

The two parties are still in the early stages of discussions but Dover said signs were positive that Martin, out of contract at the end of 2017, could stay at the Gold Coast. Dover said the 21-year-old was in a good headspace at the Queensland club as he looked to complete a rare full pre-season uninterrupted by injury.

“I caught up with him on the Gold Coast over the last couple of days, seeing where he is at and where his head is at,” Dover said.

“You can never predict these things and where it ends up until you’re further down the road but he’s in a good place, has had a great pre-season and there is a good vibe around the group at the moment, so that’s really positive.”

Martin signed a five-year deal ahead of the 2013 season before he played a senior game after being taken No.1 in the 2012 mini-draft.

Dover said another long-term deal would be unlikely and suggested a two- to three-year contract would be more probable.

Martin has played 44 games for the Suns and finished third in the club’s 2016 best and fairest behind winner Tom Lynch and Jarrod Harbrow.

It came after a tough first two years where he dislocated his shoulder five minutes into his debut against Richmond in 2014, sidelining him for half the season, before missing time with hamstring and ankle injuries in 2015.

No doubt Martin would garner interest from rival clubs who watched him excel at forward, half-back and midfield in 2016.

But Dover said he had not spoken to other clubs about Martin and would not do so unless he decided his future lies outside of the Gold Coast.

A Suns spokesman said the club’s list manager, Scott Clayton, was is in constant dialogue with player managers in relation to contracts.

I wonder if the prospect of free agency will be a factor in his decision. Jack is entering his fourth season in the AFL and the AFLPA is pushing hard to reduce the number of years required at a club to be eligible for free agency to seven. So if that goes through then Jack might be inclined to sign a three-year extension so he comes out as a free agent in 2020. Nat Fyfe did the same thing three years ago.

Steven May says a new deal with Gold Coast Suns is a formality

RECENTLY crowned Suns co-captain Steven May says a new deal with the club will be just a formality with the Gold Coast poised to lock in their superstar bookend.

May is out of contract at the end of the 2017 season but after becoming former skipper Gary Ablett’s successor along with key forward Tom Lynch, it’s a case of when, not if, the 25-year-old signs a new deal.

The key defender’s Melbourne-based manager Ned Guy and the Gold Coast have already had initial discussions about May’s future and will ramp up talks in the coming months.

The Northern Territory product said he was eager to stay at the club that picked him as a local talent selection in 2010.

“I would have thought it’s a matter of when because the club’s ready to re-sign me,” May said.

“Once I have a meeting with my manager and sit down and view my future – which becoming a captain you would think is on the Gold Coast – so once that comes together I should be staying here.

“I’ve always signed in my out-of-contract year so to myself and my manger it’s more of a formality.

“I’m from Darwin so I don’t have a ‘go home’ factor or anything like that. My manager’s been in contact with the club and they are going through the finer things and I think I have a meeting with him soon.

“Once things settle down a bit we will fully address that.

“I think the club has indicated that they are keen to extend the deal. Then it’s just a matter of getting down into the nitty gritty and getting it sorted.”

Lynch inked a two-year deal worth an estimated $800,000 a year in April last year and May would likely garner a pay packet of similar stature due to his standing as one of the AFL’s best key defenders.

Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade said he was confident of locking in one of his most talented players.

“We have spoken to Steven and his management so it’s all positive there. It’s a matter of timing,” Eade said.

“We are hopeful that it will be sooner rather than later. We will work through that hopefully over the next month or so.”

For you, I am replying to the GA reference, mercenary..? WTF, name any 1 player that has been with Suns from the outset, who has given more in regards to their very limited "shelf life" as an elite athlete.

What else is new, apart from your gossip bs..?

I don't deny you are GCS oriented, only what you choose to share.
