The game has become too quick for players like Schmidt, who is looking more and more like Shirley every time i see him.

He has one possible position in my opinion and that is as a tagger.

So do we assume that now Douglas is beyond the reach of the BF whippers we must search out a replacement...hmmm who is someone we can all turn on like rabid dogs...I know lets choose a 10 game 21 year old thrown into a defence currently devoid of leadership. Yep that pretty easy...after all he made at least 2 mistakes last night standing an experienced premiership player.

Of course the BF darlings such as Porplyzia and NC gold pass holders such as Doughty, Stevens or Riley will, as they do every week, slide through and escape criticism even though they happen to be experienced players continuing to put up poor performances.

Yep lets beat up on the weakling. Much easier.

Schmidts season beats Doughtys season. That is all.

That's arguable, but he definitely beats Edwards :)

I realise he is only 21 and has alot to learn. I think he is categorically not a backman though.

I'm not sure why NC didn't swap him out for Petrenko when St Kilda's little men were cutting loose in the 3rd.

Admittedly, I missed the last quarter due to other commitments (from the sounds of things, I didn't miss much :o) so perhaps he was diabolical in that quarter or something, but I thought Schmidt was pretty good on the weekend. Not sure why he of all people has had the daggers pointed at him by some here on the forums. Regularly read the ball better than anyone else within the 50 and most of the time was able to get it to a player in a position to use it.

I guess he must have made a few blues in the last quarter or something because on what I saw I'd say he was our best performing youngsters on the weekend (tie with Armstrong perhaps).

Davis was probably better Stabby but I also really liked Schmidt's game on the whole.

Maybe bouncing my baby on the knee and 'talking' with her to distract me from just how shit an effort we put into that last quarter made me miss him being truely awful he was in the last quarter? I doub it.

Geez some people here see one or two errors and just leap on the poor kids.

I was thinking throughout the game "Gee, Davis really hasn't put one foot wrong the whole match here" but then midway through the third quarter he had a series of mistakes that cost us just as we were really putting up a good fight that tarnished him a bit. I don't disagree with you though. I'd put Schmidt, Armstrong and Davis all close to each other on what I saw, and all three in our top half of players on the weekend.

I haven't read the Gameday thread yet (been a crazy weekend for me), was he really vilified?

I would say he barely put a foot wrong all night. Didn't get a huge amount of the ball, but he did some nice things when he did and also did some nice things when he didn't have it.
Just finished going through it now. About 70% of the posts were whinging about the umpiring (with good reason). He did get bagged out for letting Schneider get around him in the final term though.

villified was a touch strong - thought so when I typed it but was happy to let it fly through to the keeper.

I'll rephrase to say i was incredibly shocked to see him cop a few negative comments as I thought he had played reasonably. Looked great with the ball in his hands.

I'd like to see him on a wing actually.

So would I - it was the one of the main things I noticed at the last couple of home games I went to; he's very good at getting himself into position to be the linkman, but he doesn't get used by his teammates as often as he should.

I'm sure that'll change in time, but he looks like a winger.
