The federal government is expected to announce policies capping immigration at 160,000 and forcing a portion of skilled migrants to live outside Sydney and Melbourne.

Cabinet has authorised the changes, which would slash the targeted annual intake of permanent migrants by up to 30,000, The Australian reports.
A regional settlement policy would require a certain number of skilled migrants to live for at least five years in cities other than Sydney and Melbourne.

The government will also provide incentives for foreign students to attend universities away from the two major cities, as part of its bid to reduce congestion in Sydney and Melbourne.
The policy announcement will lower targets that were previously in place. The moves have been orchestrated by the Liberals’ Expenditure Review Committee (ERC) and are part of the government’s broader population policy.

There will also be incentives for international students to study at regional universities or at cities other that Sydney and Melbourne. Last year over 500,000 students from overseas attended Australian universities.

Coercing migration away from major population centres is a good policy aim, although the most successful strategies seem to be initiated at council or more local level. Western Victoria have examples of South Sudanese settlement schemes which are working well - some towns are actually desperate for workers and migrants are helping to fill those gaps.

With the help of immigration, we can turn a Ballarat or Bendigo into a decent sized city.

One of the benefits to the immigrant is smaller towns are also far less confronting. Melbourne and Sydney would be culture shock for many.

Agreed - migration to the Snowy region and Wheatbelt of WA enabled nation/region building projects. Piling everyone into two cities is destroying what is great about those two cities.

FWIW the government has a new Visa class with regional restrictions, it's a really good start.
Vic gov moved Workcover to Geelong which helped that city post-Ford closure too. Some governments are at least trying.

Forcing skilled migration to rural areas is a good policy. Im not sure exactly the way to do it as it can be a very big culture shock to some people moving to the shittiest country towns.
Not always.

When father stepped off the boat at Port Melbourne, the bus took him to his brothers house off Gordon St Footscray.

Dad said it felt like he'd never left home. I asked "What do you mean by that father?"

He said "I come from s**t hole. Footscray in 70's is s**t hole."

A match made in heaven :rainbow:

And let's face it, footscray in the 70's was the equivalent of a shitty country town. Although I'm not convinced an iPhone wielding foreign uni student would have the same positive mindset as dad.

FINALLY!

Hanson is on $200k a year as a Senator and pretty much treats ON money as her own. If wealth is an issue for you, she's not your answer.

The South Sudanese program in Western Victoria is very successful - in my experience refugees just want opportunity and safety which rural areas are able to provide. Having a decent plot of land to grow half their food helps too (e.g. Rwandan genocide was far more to do with inheritance shrinking the size of arable plots than simple Hutu/Tutsi warfare)

Moving skilled immigrants to rural areas is a good policy imo. The government just need to make sure that they get it right.

Now give big businesses better tax breaks to relocate to rural towns and help shift the unhealthy balance between big city populations and rural areas.

$200k? ha big deal

the others mentioned make millions.

She is the only hope we have. Only one with balls.
Worth 6 million dollars. Shes not one of us. By all means you've fallen hook line and sinker. Just remember what the vietmanese copped when she said they were taking over. She earnt money and a living from placing a divide in our society. Sleep on that.

There really isn't enough of this done. State governments are absolutely terrible at growing regional economies.

youve fallen for it sorry. You think Kochie and Moreison are good men. Pure Evil. You are exactly who they target. Dumass' who get riled
up when words like racist get thrown around.

This sounds like one of this government's few good policies (only wish they'd done this sooner.) Diverting new immigrants away from the capitals especially is long overdue, and it gives us a framework that can be used to target a sustainable population figure.

There are rarely enough votes in it. It's been decades since an SA electorate outside of Adelaide switched between the two parties.

A number have already settled in well in country Vic and towns in Q'ld.

Don't know that Geelong is the best place to put emigrant workers. Lot of long time unemployed people down there, even less jobs.
