Canada and Namibia play their first games tomorrow

http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc-cricket-world-cup-qualifier-2014/content/series/681019.html

10 teams split into 2 groups, play round robin, then super sixes, followed by the final.

Based on the first round of play, Hong Kong and PNG look strong.

The Hong Kong vs Scotland result surprised me, not the best start to Paul Collingwood's temporary job :P. I would have thought Scotland would be used to the NZ-style conditions a bit more.

I'd picked Scotland and the Netherlands to make it before the final round but it'd be great to see PNG get through.

2nd round complete - PNG looking very strong still

Nepal v Scotland at Queenstown - Jan 16, 2014
Scotland won by 90 runs

he was around in the 96WC if my memory serves me correctly!
I believe that s correct. He might not be the only one in the squda from those times either.

*Takes a quick look at Cricinfo for any familiar names*
Thomas Odoyo
Lamyeck Onyango is not a familiar name, but also played in that WC.

Tikolo and Odoyo were asked to make a comeback on account of Kenya being awful.

Not really sure. A few things.
One golden generation of players was not followed by another. A lack of opportunity probably played into that. Corruption and mismanagement in the national board (and Kenya hit an all time low as a nation as well, one of the traditionally more stable African nations Kenya went into the sort of turmoil more often associated with other places). The highs were really a set of unlikely events that hit at once, and then were not capitalised upon.
The lows were the result of failure to capitalise. Indeed the success led to some of the problems with greater reason to fight for control of what looked like greater forthcoming riches, and the fallout of other stuff. Instead of putting money into the game, it went into either personal pockets or got squandered in political fights.

Hong Kong have been a surprise.
I expected Scotland and Netherlands to get through as almost a fait accompli. They quite probably will still be the teams that make it, but HK inparticular have been a pleasant shock. PNG to a lesser extent.
I had hoped Nepal would step up, after a big rise through the divisions of the WCL, but seem to have hit their level for now.

The standings are available the Cricinfo link in the OP.

I've been living and playing cricket in HK for the past few years and know they boys well. Despite the British influence here, the locals still have zero interest in the game of cricket, it is primarily expats playing up here. That said, they have put together a very good side. The Ahmed brothers (Irfan particularly) are extremely talented. Mark Wright hasn't got going yet, he is very important for their qualification chances. A long way to go, but they are in a very good position to qualify.

Fantastic to see Hong Kong doing well, thought this tournament would be pretty straight forward but am glad it's not.

its a damn shame this doesn't appear to be broadcast anywhere - even on the ICC website

Wonder if we've met! Not many BF folks from HK. I don't play, but have followed HK cricket for a while and it's great to see these guys doing well. I was surprised at the Scotland result too, but not surprised at Irfan - kid has some talent if his performances at the Sixes are anything to go by.

Also, on Kenya, I thought I'd misread when I saw Tikolo on the scorecards.

There's still super 6s to go. They should enter that in a strong position, assuming they beat the UAE. But only the top two make it.

top 2 join the other 12 to compete in the world cup, with 3rd and 4th to gain/maintain odi status.

Uganda and Nepal effectively out now.
Canada and Kenya will struggle not only to make the super 6, but look almost certain to lose odi status.

So 2 new teams (assuming Netherlands and Scotland hang on) at a minimum will gain odi status (probably from PNG, HK, UAE, Namibia)

UAE deserve it. They did very well in the first class matches.
