News Dale Thomas to defer contract talks until season's end

We've been in finals seven years running and just don't get access to top end talent in the draft. We can't afford to also let our better players walk out because they had a year interrupted by injury, and did a few cheesy ads.

Well he made All-Australian in 2011. I dont care too much about that stuff but I would think that it indicates that a group of football people thought he was in the top 30 players in a competiation that has about 750 players. It sounds a bit like someone saying that Buddy had a bit of a down year after he kicked 13 in Tasmania. And I must apologise for using quotation marks in my post. You certainty didnt write "down and out". Please forgive me.

If you had read my first comment correctly, you see that I was merely hoping that he can recapture his career best form , which was quite obviously the first 11 rounds of 2011 (which doesn't mean every game outside of that period was shit) when he was a top 5 player in the competition. It actually sounds nothing like your Buddy analogy, you were just putting words in my mouth.

Thanks for the apology and cheers for selectively editing my post when you quoted it too.

For not signing a year before his current contract expires and doing an interview?

Ok.

I see he totally ignored Thomas' solid reasoning for the delay too. Roos suffered from the same problems other clubs and coaches did, it was just that he wasn't in the fishbowl of Melbourne where every action is scrutinised and blown up by the press. He shits me with his high and mighty attitude.

Why bother having a two year contract if the media expects you sign another contract when you still have a whole year to go?
Daisy made a fair point when he said he didn't know how his body would hold up. It's a sensible course of action for him and one I'm sure most players would follow.

This sort of speculation wouldn't happen in any other industry (the season hasn't even started yet) and it is actually the media that is damaging the club. (Or any other club with star players in a similar situation)

... But it sounds as though his reasoning is legit. Article is from Sports News First but contains direct quotes.

Players putting off contract talks is never a good thing, although I can understand why he would do so in this case and I do believe he wants to stay with us.
Regardless his reasoning the early call circumvents a season of media speculation, ala Cloke.
I heard he's going to Cartoon though....:D

It's harder to re-sign your best players without an extra 10% in the cap.

If he gets back to 2010-11 form I'll follow the story with some interest.

More of 2012 and meh, happy to get some compensation for him.

We play our best when we have our backs to the wall.

Some of the best footy the club played was when Didak and Shaw were suspended. We had a delapidated team, yet still went into the 2nd week of finals.

Would love to see the team culture go back to that 'hunter' mentality...or the 'us against them'. We obviously are trying to get back to that mentality, but I just get the impression that we have too many elite players who walk around like they know it.

Having said all that, Dale THomas is still as competitive as the first day he walked into the side. He throws his body on the line and tackles very hard. He is one I'd like to keep on the list because he is a fighter. He is different to the likes of Swan and Pendlebury who are much more mellow in the way they play.

Paul roos has an ulterior motive here when he says the Pies are a good chance of winning this year and I think he is actually trying to do a bang up job of derailing our season.

Why is he putting the blowtorch on our players when the biggest name in the game (Franklin) has said he won,t be signing any time soon that he would prefer to wait till season,s end.

Paul Roos is no friend of the Collingwood fc and he is bias you only need to hear him talk about his beloved Swans,I would not trust a word he say,s.

Roos was a tankers fan before they tanked. His word on Collingwood isn't worth a pinch of spit.

If scum wanna pay 600-700k a year on Thomas if it means they won't get a Key Forward. Cya later Dale. As It has already been said, everyone i wanted to be signed up again are, if Thomas stays, good. If he goes, whatever. Theres plenty of players like him around, there is no need to break the bank. Anything more than 500k MAX I wouldn't wanna pay to be honest.

Took my son to a school footy clinic in Cohuna yesterday with some Pies players and Daisy was one of them. Seemed to be getting along fine with the other players, no obvious animosity or anything like that and seemed in good spirits. Also said when asked that "the ankle's good mate", didn't seem to be struggling with it too much.

P.S. The only place I've heard or read that Daisy's is leaving his contract negotiations until the end of the season is in this thread title, that article does not mention that at all.

I have said it in the past and will say it again. We will keep everyone we want to.

Our cap space will also ease up a bit in the next year or two with dids, jolly, krak, Bj, q-stick and maybe bally and Swanny all near the end of their career. I only mention Swanny as i believe he said this current contract is his last.

Daisy said it, clearly and unambiguously on camera.

I agree. And with the "Us v Them" type of culture that we're pushing, 80% of the whole world is going to be against us......and they will be totally unbelievable. So get used to it... Laugh it off..... make fun of it.... and dont start questioning the loyalty of the player. What will happen, will happen. Relax and forget about next year's premiership or the ones that might not occur when players leave, and concentrate on this team and 2013. So under that philosophy, Thomas is on our list this year.... I believe that in a few weeks he will be back playing and trying hard to get a big contract. If someone could deliver the certainty that he would be Norm Smith medal holder in 2013 in a premiership team, then I couldnt care less now about what he might be doing next year.

What was this on? Anyone got this interview/footage? I would've thought if he said that the HUN would be all over it.

It was on game day on channel seven.

Don't have am issue with Thomas pushing back contract negotiations.

This way he can prove he is worth his price and we don't overpay him or he gets the shits because we are underpaying him and walks.

He'll sign. Don't worry about that.
