Seriously underrated bowler (would have him up there with Bruce Reid, who coached me 1 on 1 and let me tell you knows his shit) in terms of being underrated.

Quality commentator and speaker, and a ****ing legend basically.

Thoughts on the bloke.

was a beautiful bowler, genuinely nice bloke, fairly handy with the bat, and never said no to anyone.

I remember after one performance he was how he got the ball to swing so much, he just shrugged and said words like 'i don't know, it just happens when i bowl like that.

Could have, should have, played more test matches, except for injuries and Australia being rich in talent for quality bowlers during the period of the second half of the 90s, fleming would get fit, play a good season and then break down again.

IMO had he even played 3 out of 5 tests every series, he would have been worth it.

75 wickets at 25 or 26? had that been 200 would have been in the category of the great bowlers.

HOw blessed we were, Mcdermott, merv, Reiffel, McGill all sub 30 bowlers, Kasper, bichel and lee about 30, and of course the greats McGrath, Warne and Dizzy among the gifts we were given during this period.

Agree with every word.

Flem was massively underrated.

In 2001, he and Brett Lee were battling for the last fasts bowling spot (after McGrath and Gillespie). Lee was the up-and-comer, Fleming the old habd (he's 5 years older). Lee played all 5 tests in 2001 - and took 9 wickets at an average of 55. We could afford to carry him because the other 3 bowlers were killing the poms.

Fleming never played another test - Lee played another 60-odd. At the end, their records were very similar (even batting). I reckon if Fleming had been around still in 2005 (he would have been 35) - we would have won. Remember we only lost the two tests McGrath missed, and Flem was a much better replacement than Lee.

And Flem is a much getter ad-man than lee as well.

Pretty sure flemings bowling average was about 26 and Lee's was about 31, thats a significant improvement.

concur batting was about the same, i would rate lee as slightly more reliable with the bat.

Lee definitley improved his record by beating up the Kiwis and the Windies.

Lee started his career taking about 100 runs at 18, and we were all excited, but as the decade dragged on, so did he.

Perhaps this is a case where people should have just let him bowl instead of helping him...

Definitely up-and-coming great commentator, seems like a great bloke. "Bowlologist"
I had no idea Flem was on Thank God.

I think he would have killed that 2001 Ashes series in England. If not for Steve Waugh's obsession with Brett Lee, who was clearly not fit after elbow surgery, any other captain would have played Fleming and he would have taken a stack of wickets.

At least the 2001 series saw the return of Damien Martyn to the fray and didn't he dominate with the bat!

Love Flem. Genuine top bloke. Had him at a sports night and he was great. Stayed around for a chat and photos after unlike Dean jones who left in a hurry.
