I wonder why neither GC nor Port preferred to deal with North. Their first pick next year should be a good one.

That’s kind of the point. If the deal is acceptable you take it if not reject it and hold him to his contract.If hes so important better you guys just hold him to his contract I guess?
Depends on your definition on worth. Top 10 picks are pretty valuable and Melbourne's looks like being a decent top 10. I think like Barrass, it might even need a slight sweetener but two firsts when one is top 10 is crazy talk.That’s kind of the point. Why should port accept less just than his worth because he’s 27 and that doesn’t fit some teams age demographic?
IMO I think his value is similar to what Essendon got for Saad and he was traded for pick 8 without even being AA. Fans wanting both the top 10 pick and another 1st are being a bit unrealistic.Depends on your definition on worth. Top 10 picks are pretty valuable and Melbourne's looks like being a decent top 10. I think Melbourne posters know they are going to pay a lot as well, the concerns over the age demo is more because of how this seems like a horrible idea from Melbourne, not downplaying his value.
Yeah said in the Barrass thread but there's nuance to contracted players and for this move to be so openly acknowledged already, Port want the picks and Melbourne will have a breaking point. What precedent did we set?Port set the precedent with JHF and he was worth a hell of a lot more than Houston.
I'd be offering a F1 if I was Melbourne, even then I'd be hesitant given his age and where they are at.
What precedent did we set?
Port literally spent 2 weeks trying to find a deal and a multi team trade that would work and get you a better pick. Did you follow trade week at all during that time?You didn't try to move your position and simply offered up what you had?
You effectively traded Pick 8 and a F1 for the most hyped SA prospect in a decade with his entire career in front of him?
If I'm Melbourne Im doing the same.
I'd trade out of their position and just give Port what is left over. What other option do Port have, really in that scenario?
I'd trade their first pick to someone looking to trade up and trade the balance to Port.
Or alternatively trade their F1 into a bevy of picks and give Port the left overs.

Ports other option in that scenario is to hold him to his contract, the exact same option that north had with Horne Francis.
History says that the majority of the time a player asks to leave it gets done, but it is on the team receiving the player which is Melbourne to make the deal attractive enough to the seller which is port to let him leave with 4 years to run on his contract. Where it ends up I don’t know but I would be dissapointed with melbournes first pick on its own.Which is not really a scenario is it?
The evidence is this will get done.
The last gun half back that was traded was Jordan Dawson. He was traded for what eventuated as Pick 15.
He was also turning 24 the following season, not 28. So had a prospective 100+ games more for Adelaide.
Houston is arguably better than Dawson was then at the moment, but enough to offset the age difference? Probably not.
Pick 15-20 is where I think his worth sits.
Which is why I think Melbourne trade back and find a pick in that range for Port.
Houston is one of the more damaging half backs in the comp, but it's also the easiest position to fill in the AFL at the moment.
Talk of top 10 picks or multiple R1 picks in Melbourne's list position is madness and I don't think will be the reality of Tim Lamb.
I think he'd be looking at the possibility of adding a prospect in an even draft + Houston.
Port organised that trade did they?Port literally spent 2 weeks trying to find a deal and a multi team trade that would work and get you a better pick. Did you follow trade week at all during that time?

Pick 7 alone one of the most valuable trades in the last decade?Of course you would, because Port fans are trying to salvage years of lost draft capital.
That would make Houston one of the more valuable trades of the last decade.
Can't see it personally.
Yes they were part of the discussions to make this happen. I didn’t say they did it alone.Port organised that trade did they?

The art of the deal: how the AFL’s mega trade took shape
It involved two No.1 picks, two top-five picks, a premiership player and a future first-rounder. Plus it involved four states. The deal that started with Jason Horne-Francis’ request for a trade was the mega-trade to beat all others. Here’s the inside story.www.theage.com.au

I am not saying I would be happy with fair value. I would be dissapointed if we didn’t get overs for an all Australian half back in our leadership group with 4 years to run on his contract.Not Melbourne's first pick on it's own would, if that is your expectation of not being disappointed. Which would indicate your view of fair value.
Pick 7 -> Richmond
Pick 13 (Freo/Baker) & 20 (GC/Rioli) -> Port
Houston -> Dees
Pretty clear that the major work was done by others. North were in a crap position and scrambled an acceptable but far from ideal result from the mess. You guys may have to do something similar this time.Yes they were part of the discussions to make this happen. I didn’t say they did it alone.
I don’t think Houston is the type to not be professional if he doesn’t get his own way. I think we are in a fine position here and don’t need to scramble for anything.Pretty clear that the major work was done by others. Ending up with both George and Harry don't think there are to many salty North supporters.Love the salty still north posters. Haha
