He was absolutely carved up by Moloney today and while he has considerable value to us I wonder if he is indispensible?

Talks a good game but missed a couple of gettable goals today and he isn't the most fluid of midfielders

So, is he good or just handy?

He carved up a Brownlow medalist the week before so yes. Does have bad games but has more good than bad imo. Our best tagger by a mile.

Plays his role as a tagger, wracks up disposals (im not worried when the balls in his hands, comparatively to the rest of the team anyway) and kicks a goal here and there. He probably could have kicked one or two today if he went for it.

Warrants selection because who else can play his role in the team? Grigg maybe, but hes too lazy imo.

Played well against Black a week ago, cant let the negatives carry more weight than the positives... if that was the case you would have trouble selecting even our better performing players.

Moloney has been in AA form this year, pantsing Jackson like he did today was always on the cards.

This will go under the radar but is the truth, the Jamar to Moloney combo has carved up better teams than us this year.

Doesn't say much really

Would say hes still automatic selection in this side though wouldn't it? Which is what this thread is about.

I agree. I think Moloney and the sort of player Moloney is, was always going to beat Jackson this week.

He's alright, probably is automatic selection because who on Earth is waiting to fill his spot?

Jackson is an athlete more than a footballer, his big tank and strength are what gets him by. His foot skills and footy smarts are horrendous.

I have been saying this for a while. Obviously still deserves a spot in our 22 but long term needs to be replaced. Is the most unaware player on the field sometimes and makes some horrible decisions. Always thought he has been an average tagger.

Does make you wonder why no one has really been used as a tagger besides him in the last couple of years? Helbig/Nason type players possibly asked to give it a go?

has been pretty ordinary this year and actually commented to idy that i wouldn't be offering him any long term deal, year to year proposition from what i have seen this season

Who does everyone think we could develop as a tagger?

I agree with Gak Attack that Helbig and Nason are possibilities. Pros for Nason is his endurance and it doesnt seem your negating any potential attributes he already has. I see Helbig as a possibility for two reasons, hes aggressive with guts and he looks tall enough to not be at a disadvantage to the increasing height of Midfielders. Although, i dont think anyone (unless your a Coburg follower) can say too much about Helbig as a player yet.

Theres always the option to recruit a 'run-with' type player. I cant think of any examples of this happening though so maybe its not the preferred way of doing things when it comes to List Management.

Marc Lock from the Suns doesnt seem to be getting a run, perfect age bracket and shown plenty in the VFL last year.

We have not given anyone else a go at tagging. We actually need to use a late pick/rookie pick to draft the best tagger in the country. If we can get a Clint Jones type it would go a long way. For a guy who is meant to be the best runner at the club he gets hardly any ball.

Jackson, unfortunately, is the type of deeply flawed player that we are forced to play because we have no-one who can do any better; I, too, would like to see us with a specialist tagger because gun opposition players get a guaranteed picnic against the Tigers at present

i still think jackson gets a game because of a dearth of big bodies.

for me i would have given martin the job of going head to head with molony after half time.

also i would have thought someone like hislop would make a good tagger apart from one critical aspect pace.

also it never gets mentioned but one of the most deficient areas we suffer in across the board is polish or quality or just being clean. jackson does not help in this regard and you can name 9 or 10 others from today in the same boat.
hmm i may start a thread on this topic.

No way , I haven't been a White fan , but he has done some very good negating roles , albeit mostly only smaller types I think he warrants a crack as number 1 tagger !!

Forgot about White and agree with you. Also his pace the other way can really hurt those attacking players that don't want to put in going the other way.

another very dumb poorly skilled glass half full. ffs if we replace jackson at least let it be an upgrade.

Should be definitely offered to GWS, they would like his body size
Matt Dea was playing as a tagger in the twos before getting injured. Perhaps he was emarked for a tagging role

Hmm I think I like the new santa, making a lot of sense at times of late. Replaced the sledge hammer with a rolling pin I wonder? :)

For the record, I think Hislop would lack the tank as well as pace, but you can build up a tank. Takes a while though.

In close, we were terribly sloppy today, very unclean... fumbling, falling over, etc. And I mean more so than usual!
