Injury Dane Swan

The Swan injury sure changes the expectations of the season in a hurry.

Missing the top 8 seems almost certain now based on my evaluation with another 11th/12th place finish looming as a result.

Hawthorn/Geelong/Sydney/West Coast/Fremantle/Port Adelaide/Western Bulldogs/GWS/North Melbourne/Richmond should all be better with Gold Coast the team I'd have competing with us for 11th if I'm to guess a rough ladder order today.

The positive is it's an opportunity to start to get more aggressive in our introduction of young players. Or at least so I hope, as we're not going anywhere this year.
I'm so happy we got treloar but not having a first rounder this year is really disappointing since I can't see ya making the 8 either

So much for our depth...

I thought that this season was always a balancing act, between making a finals push and blooding young players. But I'd say you're right, balance is now in favour of the latter. Reckon this topic needs it's own thread...though it would be accused of being premature.

The lack of a first round selection this year is unfortunate and obviously the cost of adding Treloar. Still worth it, but you'd love to have finished top 4 just to minimise the return GWS gained from the deal.

We have depth a plenty.

Replacing a 600+ disposal, 20+ goal, 115+ clearance, 95+ inside 50, 100+ mark, 240+ contested possession a year player doesn't happen through depth though.

You need star power to win and Swan was still probably a best 10, if not then certainly a best 15 midfielder in the game. Just as Adelaide will fail to replace Dangerfield, as good as some of those new mids who are set to play more prominent roles in that new look Adelaide midfield look, we similarly as a result of the loss of Swan take a significant step back. Particularly with the evenness of the competition.

Swan is a big loss but it is always easier to replace a mid. Think you are over stating the impact this will have.

I looked at this season similarly also coming in. Making finals was a non-negotiable. But with Swan out, Cloke looking entirely out of sorts like we've never seen before, Pendlebury not winning the contested ball and clearances to the standard I expect, Reid still attempting to get back and get through a full season. I see this list going as far as our youth take us with our only chance of getting something out of this season being off the back of their progress.

I'd still not prefer to open the floodgates down back, prefer to find a balance between experience and youth to try and stop us from being hammered every week. For example, to ever have Maynard, Ramsay and Marsh in the same backline would seem to be begging for trouble. Beyond that I agree...keep building the foundation for beyond this year.

I am feeling a bit down at the moment that we may have seen the last of Swanny. Hope i am wrong

I love watching him so much. One of my favourite ever pies players from watching since the 80s

He also reminds me that while you may not really fit the norm as an athlete, you can still be an absolute gun.

Ffs anyone would think its the week before finals the way everyone carries on gives me the shits. I am so sick of the negativity everytime we have a loss. Get a grip for christ sake
Wtf? This is about Swanny and his injury.

Wrong thread possibly?

I don't agree. If you heard Viney tonight he was spot on. He loves his footy hard to walk away when it's been such a huge part of your life. All his close mates at club still playing.
He would have plenty of great mates who dont play footy. If we dont play finals he'll retire, hes pretty much said this himself and that was before he was injured.

The injury changes this, though. He'll need to make a decision well before anyone knows whether Collingwood is playing finals or not. If he decides to play on, the effort he puts into his recovery will need to be far greater than if he chooses to retire.

Craig Plumridge, from Pro Feet Podiatry, told AFL.com.au that the foot and leg injuries the star Pie sustained in the first quarter of Saturday night's match at the SCG were incredibly severe.

As a result, Plumridge – whose practice specialises in foot, ankle and knee injuries – believes Swan would need to pull off a "miraculous" comeback to return this season, and more likely faces a 12-month recovery period before he is back to full fitness.

"Realistically he'd be aiming at being in full activity some time next year. At best, he'd be coming back into footy drills this year."

Sadly I think the reality is it's almost certain we have seen Swanny play his last game.

This injury has not only wiped out his 2016 but could also impact on his preseason for 2017... He said he was a 50/50 to retire only a few weeks ago, a whole year of rehab will push that well over the edge.

Horrible way to go out for a champion

Noone believed me when I said his season was pretty much over when it happened. Even ch 7 said they were looking into an ankle sprain but if you saw it you knew your foot is not supposed to go that way at all.

Maybe we didn't believe you because Champions should never finish their careers like this!

I hope it is not true.......he deserved to finish his career on the field!

He will come back. We all know he marches to the beat of his own drum so he won't let an injury decide when his career ends.

I hope so sirlothie but three breaks at his age?.......usually I "am glass half full" but it is not looking good.

I really hope I am wrong.

I know it was especially worrying what Richo said about the ligament but looking on the bright side it gives someone else an opportunity and we can start learning to live without him.

This has to be the worst Round 1 we ever had so it can only get better.

I don't think so. The difference between a top 50 player and a "good" player is huge. Think how much better we'd be if we had Leon Davis still in our backline. Or Heath Shaw. Class wins close games.

I can see losing Swan for the year costing us around 2 wins

That's probably the difference between making finals and not making it in a close season

Yeah I agree Kappa I think you are being a little conservative to be honest about the wins
