I don't think so. The difference between a top 50 player and a "good" player is huge. Think how much better we'd be if we had Leon Davis still in our backline. Or Heath Shaw. Class wins close games.

Yes he was very very good down back for us, but sorry to remind us all, awful in grand finals.
Heath Shaw, he needed the change to freshen him up. Became our class clown, for whatever reason.

We do need class hence Treloar.
We will want at some stage for De Goey, Moore to be the class, maybe if uninjured Scharenberg too.

For me, this is more depressing than the loss itself. Such an idiosyncratic footballer and character of the club for a long time. It's sad to think he will out of the team for so long and probably never get back to his best (ok, his best is behind him anyway but you know what I mean). I hope he plays on next year.

And he was so durable.

Sharenberg's the one we've really missed I think. And yes, Moore has class. I guess I think the thing we're missing most is an elite highly-skilled small defender.

I would just like to caution people that a podiatrist is not a doctor and is certainly not a surgeon.

What he says may be right and I'm sure he's good at what he does but I'd still be waiting to hear what Swan's actual surgeon says.

That's why he tried to see if he could run on the sidelines! Westmeadows boys are tough and Swanny's never had a real injury like this before. May be that the lackadaisical lad might just have to draw deep from his working class irish background and really grit his way through a tough rehab. I have not been more shattered by an injury since Bucks exploded his hammy. The reason for this is I feel we are being robbed of a special time in the career of a special player. Swan going forward was for me to be one of the highlights of the year. There is not many players who can transition at the end of their careers to become damaging forwards and effectively add years on their career. Swanny is/was one of these. This injury casts doubt over that potential now.

Bucks was similarly on the same path. If not for his hammies he would have played permanent forward for a number of years after and had a huge impact. Much like Pavlich and Goodes have done.

Swanny gave us a taste in the pre season of what he would look like up there and it was all very good. Perhaps when he returns it can be as a forward and we get more years than from Swanny, until then I will sulk.

Played as a permanent or even semi-permanent forward he would've been good for a 40 goal season.

I have a strong feeling he'll play on next year.... but a lot will depend on how the side performs.

I don't often pop onto other sides boards, but I wanted to express my admiration for Dane Swan and the way he plays the game. I recall thinking at times, how does a player who runs like that produce week after week after week at ridiculously high levels. He's a star.

On top of all that, its the way he plays the game...hard at it, but clean as a whistle and respect always for his opponent. ITs the way you would like to see your son play.

I can't put it any better than that. I sincerely hope we see him on the MCG again.

I remember a lot of collingwood supporters calling for leon to be dropped when he was in the backline several times.

Before the injury he said he was 50/50 about playing on in 2017.

Now that he has plenty of time on his hands the odds may have changed for the better or worse.

IMO we get rid of our older players at Collingwood to easy.
It shits me watching Mitchell, Lewis, Burgoyne, Hodge e.t.c still having an significant influence on their team.

Swanny has earnt the right to make the decision on his own.
