Was watching the game on Saturday with my father-in-law, and he told me a story about Dane Swan's old man, that he kicked a goal after the siren to win the premiership for Port Melbourne in the 70's. He reckons that he'd never kicked a ball more than thirty meters in his life and just came out with a massive 60m torp when it mattered. Not sure how true this is but there you go. Can anyone corroborate?

It was 1990, and the win was for williamstown, not Port Melbourne.

Billy Swan was a gun VFL footballer - a centreman with very good skills and hard as nails. Played for Port melbourne and then Williamstown.

My mistake, he did say Williamstown actually. I stand corrected.

Bill played almost all of his football with Port but after a dispute with the club played a season or so with Willi. I think he then might have gone back to Port to finish his career, Whatever, he's considered an absolute legend down at Port.

My old man tells me Billy Swan was as tough as they come.
My dad says the same also that dane has his old mans gait and set shot ability.

Maybe our next preimership will be secured with a dane swan torp? se i do hope not cause id be having kittens by that stage. Swans goal kicking setting up a GF win:eek:

It was williamstown in 1990 i was at the game, springvale were killing them and it was swan and the full forward rickman who got them back into the game. i remember going to the toilet in the last quarter and couldnt believe we were so close when i returned. One of the players marked it i think it was taggart number 9 for willy barry round was the coach then he kicked it to swan the siren went and the ball floated through the goals for a win. It was very exciting, swan won two liston medals played in more grand finals than any other player and played the most games in the VFA over 300. I think he was named in port melbournes team of the century and the VFA's he was a great centreman, could read the play like dane and was a great user of the ball, he had a better running style than dane but the more i watch dane the more he reminds me of his father. I'm pretty sure when he kicked that goal they said it would be his last kick as he was 34 but he went on to play two more years with williamstown and then coached reserves for a year. If you want to find out more just google him i think phil cleary has written some things on him saw him interviewed on VFA on ABC a few years ago. Go swannie.

In the Cleary inteview (last year I think) Bill said that Dane's running style is deceptive and that he's a lot quicker than many people think. I agree - and he also seems to have exceptional stamina. His ability to make himself an option and then beat his opponent to the ball (often over 100m and more) is exceptional.

As has been said already, it was Williamstown in the 1990 VFA Grand Final.

Apparently Billy Swan couldn't kick over a jam tin (kicking skills somewhat akin to Tony Shaw), yet he dobbed one after the siren from 50 out to win the Granny.

Guru I believe it would have been McTaggart no 9. Heard he has a couple of young ones coming along nicely as well.

Yes you are right it was Mctaggart i remembered after i post thread sorry. Those that are saying bill swan could not kick over jam tin had kicking ability of tony shaw are mistaken i think fred cook loved taking a pass from him, true he was never a long kick but was a great pass of the ball, you dont get two liston medals and named in a team of century for nothing. I remember seeing an article in the herald sun a few years ago with a picture of dane and his dad it was a good story, if he played AFL we would be hearing about him every week like all the other father and sons playing at the moment. At least dane gets to be himself and not have to live in father's shadow like other players do.

Im actually surprised people were not aware of this already.
On ANZAC day I yelled out "Go Billy" and some Pies fan asked me why I was yelling out Billy when his name was Dane.... I just thought you idiot, but obviously people dont follow the players as closely as I do.

No, people don't follow VFA as closely as you do.

???

I don't get called Rod when I play basketball?

I think I've onviously missed something here...

Garry Ablett Jr has the same thing happen to him apparently

Swannie is the king of contested footy - him versus his man he will win every time, even giving them 5m head start
