Footballers convicted over brawl

Three Victorian footballers have been sentenced to perform community work over a brawl with security guards at Melbourne's Federation Square.

Collingwood footballer Dane Swan, 21; the nephew of former AFL football star Wayne Carey, Kade Carey; and former Williamstown VFL footballer Aaron Ramsay, both 22; today appeared at the Victorian County Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to affray.

Carey, a former Essendon VFL player, has also pleaded guilty to criminal damage and resisting police.

The court was told the three men had been drinking together in the city just before Kade Carey jumped on the bonnet of a woman's car "body-slam style" and cracked its windscreen at the intersection of Russell and Flinders Street in the early hours of December 21, 2003.

Nearby security staff at Federation Square chased the men after the incident was reported and a brawl broke out, initially with Carey, and then his two friends who ran back to assist him, the court heard.

Judge John Barnett described Carey's actions of damaging the car as "stupid and arrogant" and warned the 22-year-old, who has a previous conviction for assault, that if he offended again he faced the prospect of jail.

The judge also said there was a case that Carey was provoked by the Federation Square security staff and it was not clear why they chased the three footballers and tried to stop them.

Carey must perform 200 hours of community work, received a two month prison term suspended for 18 months and was fined $3,000.

Ramsay, of Attwood, must do 120 hours of community work and Swan, of Kingsville, 100 hours.

Or could be coughing, ;)

I guess 100 hours is a fair time, oh well, hopefully he continues to play good footy.

Swan is a good footballer, what he does off-field is his business only.

and those people he tramples over I suppose

If I did what any one of them did, do you think I could get away with community service too?

Especially if i had previous convictions.

100 hours is a harsh punishment. It will cut deeply into his Playstation time.

He can rob a 7/11 - I don't care, as long as he is on the park playing good football for the CFC - I'm happy. :)

A rationalisation that goes back to 1990 no doubt.

Maybe they can get day release to play ...

Colin Sylvia Board

Or maybe Andrew Lovett board.

Only difference is Sylvia's girlfriend didn't place a restraining order on him, but Sylvia's story made the press whereas Lovett's didn't/hasn't yet.

He's already doing community service playing for Collingwood, after all he is part of the reason all those ferals are off the streets for a couple of hours each week.

Lowering the crime rate for a couple of hours each week = community service

That scum Swan lives just down the road from me.

Maybe I'll see him picking up rubbish off the streets. How apt.
No I think it's Swan that lives just down the road from scum.
