Patrick will do whats right for him, like we should do whats right for us. We match, like we are able to do in the rules that the AFLPA and clubs, including Geelong signed off on, and he becomes an un-contracted player, for us to trade, or he walks to the PSD.

I have a feeling we will skip the matching step or if we have to do it, only as a technicality and then go straight to trading, for something less than we would get if we did match and were willing to lose him if Geelong don't come to the table but more than compensation.

I'm not sure I'd be happy with that outcome.

Perhaps I'm a little sympathetic to the great man, but come on guys... How on earth is he "the lowest of the low"?

He's been the ultimate professional about this inevitability from day dot. Admirable finals performance this season especially.

He's a leader of this football club and bailing on his mates when we really need leadership after the year we've had. This compiled with the tweets/instagrams that have given us false hope and his "haven't thought about it" bullshit line he's played all year and the changing story of his reasons for going from "on-field success" to "family" when it was convenient for his own argument make him a shit bloke.

Plus last year's Herald Sun article where he says he couldn't bare to look at his team mates in the eye and say he's leaving via Free Agency. What's happened since then?

I can now understand why some people are saying to let him go. If he wants to go to Geelong, and we match their offer, isn't it realistic that Geelong would offer us say, Michael Luxford and Zac Bates, and then take the stance that it's those two or nothing. Leaving us completely screwed ??

Then Geelong would miss out on Dangerfield. You don't think their administration would have some pressure on them to get the job done?

Plus I can't see Danger super keen to go into the PSD and end up somewhere like Carlton, Brisbane, Gold Coast or Melbourne. Brisbane in particular would be terrible. Nowhere near home and at a team in a massive hole.

However, Hawks and Geelong already had very very solid teams, a lot stronger than Adelaide's current side. West Coast got Josh Kennedy the best forward in the league atm and Chris Masten (a very solid midfielder). Adelaide are in that West Coast stage so you would hope to get two very good players with whatever you get for Dangerfield leaving for it to be even comparable to one of those cases.

Didnt Cats and Hawks both win flags without them ?

Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought.

Despite what any of the Vic media backslappers have to say, you are well within your rights to exercise your restricted free agency "contract matching" option. The rules are there for a reason and if you can mitigate the damage by using them, you should.
