I'm of the opinion that the only way we will do a deal like that is if the AFL pull a bit of a swifty. I don't think it is likely.

I said "IF".

My guess is that we match and trade - because the AFL are probably a bit scared of bending too far - especially with West Coast threatening to match too.

In a match and trade scenario using the players I used above:

RFA
ADELAIDE - n/a
GEELONG - n/a

after matching ...

Trade
ADELAIDE - Pick 9 + Player (Gregson/Murdoch)
GEELONG - Dangerfield + Mackay

So at the end of it ...

Adelaide - Picks 9, 13, 31, 49 + Player (Gregson/Murdoch)
Geelong - Picks 27, 45, 62 + Dangerfield + Mackay

I've included Mackay because Geelong need players, they have some big numbers to fill in their list and cannot afford to give away picks and players without replacing them.

So effectively

Pick 9 = Dangerfield (traded)
(gregson/Murdoch) = Mackay (traded)

Forget it, I would be pretty damn dissapointed

Poor Geelong...
"WEST Coast is set to throw a major spanner in Geelong’s free agency plans by matching the Cats’ bid for on-baller Scott Selwood."

We ain't gonna give Geelong anything other than Danger so all these crazy trade theories that have us giving a 2nd or 3rd is nonsense.

I understand why that would seem like a sensible thing ... but don't look too narrowly at the situation.

Geelong need players. They have (I think) 8 spots to fill during trade and draft.

If they are using 1st and 2nd round picks on Danger and Henderson - and assume they get Selwood for nothing - they would have 5 spots to fill with nothing better than a 3rd pick !! I think bundling up a couple of players from us - for a player from them is entirely possible. At the very least they will want the numbers to be even (ie the number of players / picks given = the number of players/pick received)

Of course they will likely use next years picks to try and even it up too.

Well knock me over with a feather what a strange turn of events. Geelong fans hoped he would move, Adelaide fans hoped he would stay. It come up heads and not tails, and that proves it was always the case. Hillarious.
I'm not sure if I interpreted your post correctly but to be more accurate, the poll on the "Re-signing Tex, Danger and Sloane" thread: "Your thoughts on Dangerfield?", 35% said he was staying. They did not vote "hoped he was staying" but voted they thought he was staying. Some people may have voted with their heart and not their head but that is just speculation. To the majority of posters it was patently obvious he was going. I agree there was always some chance PD would defy history but it was never a 50/50 coin toss outcome. Put simply, most poster thought he was gone and they were right.

No it wasn't. It's been open knowledge since last October.

if it was known since Oct last year there would have been no requirement to run a "bring Danger home" campaign

regardless, I have read through your contribution to this thread and have come to the conclusion that unless you have some crediable insight to offer please do not come in here and post loose speculation

Just checked that post that had all our predictions ... which is a better indicator than the poll that was infested with posters not from our board / discussion :)

Dangerfield
OutofTownCrow - will sign before round 15, or he will leave via FA
Heafy83 - Sign before end of June otherwise gone
Allefgib - if we have a good year showing we will be a contender in coming years, will stay. Unlikely to sign before end of season. I think there are FA shenanigans to take care of.

Do you mean

we get compo pick 14

Mackay = pick 9
Pick 29 = Murdoch

So effectively two first rounders and Murdoch we lose Mckay and pick 29

Its Ok but cant see Kenny agreeing to Pick 9 for Mackay, Murdoch seems equal
You're probably right. And the "no shady side deals" edict from HQ is worrying.

Ken Wood would have to live under a rock to not know that Mackay is considered a lightweight despite playing 450 games and being on $1.2M a year.

All we can hope for is some leniency because the AFL and the AFLPA don't want us to break free agency by using it in the way it was designed...

Also consider that there are discussions to remove compensation picks entirely from FA and RFA

This is a good point. If we match and he comes back for two years until he is a 10 year FA, we get two years of service but potentially no compensation pick.

Hell in the NFL the best you can get us a 3rd rounder.

I'd prefer PD for another two years but at least we have the option of compensation if he leaves.

I can't see why WCE would match the Selwood offer.

Would suspect Geelong have put 400-500k to a player that isn't really in WCE best 22 at the moment, full of injuries and isn't exactly a highly talented player.

I agree he cant make their 22, it would be the same if Mackay was in that position you would let him walk and be grateful for whatever pick you were given

No compo for FA's only work in systems where clubs have more trading rights.

In the player dominated AFL system it's completely unfair.

I'd like to see receiving clubs pay the price, with that price being maybe 80% of player value (have to offer some incentive to receiving club to go for the FA thus allowing players the likelihood of getting to move to where they want without also totally screwing over the sending club that developed them).

Actually could see why they would match, if Cats are offering bugger all in contract the compo is likely to be a third rounder even fourth rounder, West Coast may believe he is worth a 2nd. who lonows?

Clearly wrong for mine. Misread the personal drivers dramatically at the start of the year.

Well then there is something wrong with you other than being a port supporter :p
It's a very interesting test case. My opinions are as follows: -
Some of the criticism of Danger is excessive.
I thought he was 50/50 to stay or go until the decision.
Crows should match.
I'm 50/50 if they will match.
Geelong don't seem to have any players you need that they would give up. Draft picks only.
I don't believe anything the media says.

Why can't people get it through their heads Cockatoo from Geelong's point of view is a non negotiable, Stephen Wells didn't enter into all the wheeler dealing he did to expressly get him in the draft to then hand him over to the first club that came "calling" the next year. Your dreaming if you even think it's a remote possibility, realistically if there is to be a player as part of the deal it will be a tier 2 type i.e. Murdoch and Smedts the most likely. If it was remotely possible the youngster I'd be comfortable with is Jake Kolodjashnij but again probably dreaming to think Geelong would let him go either.

Still can't help but feel if danger was playing for a vic club, that club would receive a top 4 pick for him......I'm still not satisfied with anything above pick 5. Pick 9 and Murdoch is crap tbh
9 and Murdoch might not be the equivalent of PD but it's way better than a measly compo pick, and would be a huge shock to we-should-get-him-for-nothing-Geelong. I'd do that deal for sure.

This is what makes the FA process unacceptable. Clubs believing they have some god almighty right to get players for free. I just see it....Geelong crying because they had to pay for something they wanted. What a load of crock.

You want something then be expected to pay for it.
