Took a while for the Victorian media & some cats supporters along with Connors to come to the obvious realisation that Afc would not accept the compensation pick as it is massive unders.

The important thing is all comments are on record & going to be funny reading the change in position over the course of time...

This would be the same Connors who declared the compo pick was all or nothing?
Would love to play Connors in poker as his bluff is pathetically obvious!

People need to take what Connors, or any other player manager says with a grain of salt. They don't care about the wishes of any clubs involved in prospective deals. They are duty bound to do one thing, and that is to do the best job for their client. All Connors wants to see, is Dangerfield to end up at his preferred destination with the least amount of worry and hassle.
There is duty of care & then there is utter stupidity which just ruins your reputation...

Apart from the obvious fact that any footy "expert" in Malbourne has an almost criminal negligence about our club, you can almost excuse them because under a previous administration, we would be very likely to accept the compo pick as "what's best for footy".

The only way we get Cockatoo is if the club goes directly to him and his manager, make him an offer and convince him to ask for a trade. I'd say he's drunk the Geelong cool aide though and believes Geelong will be a premiership chance next year. He also was a big port supporter as a kid so probably doesn't like us that much.

Holy crap, I'd forgotten about this! I couldn't quite believe it had happened.

Thinking of that incident reminded me of when Thierry Henry (this was about 11 years ago or so) smothered an opposition goalkeeper's kick out with his foot and kicked the goal only for it to be disallowed.

Guys as much as I would be reasonably satisfied with pick 9 and Cockatoo, it's not going to happen. The best we could realistically hope for is 1st round pick, 2nd round pick (hopefully upgraded via Brisbane) and Murdoch or Stanley as the player in the deal.

now there's a name nobody has mentioned yet. ex SA boy too.

The "8 years service means you should let him go for nothing" thing is strange - when you look at it in the confines of the AFL and in the wider community.

In the AFL - Has Dangerfield really given so much to the AFC to go for nothing? Danger has been paid as much as anyone on our list, so it's not like he was accepting unders for the good of the team. I reckon he has done more than his share in terms of off-field promotion, but no more than he was getting paid to do. Compare him to players of a similar vintage in other clubs ... Cyril, Breust, Pendles, Selwood, Kennedy, Boak ? Does he rank so much higher than any of these in terms of performance, in terms of bringing success? How many of his years did PD really excel? It could be argued that 2012 - 2015 were elite, 4 years - probably close to what Geelong will get out of him. Has he really earned the right to claim being a neutral cost asset? I remember that PD himself said at some stage that he could never pay back the club for what it had done for him ... that seems about right to me.

In the wider community - If you are an employee that is in the top 2 or 3 paid in the company, and you decide to leave for one of the direct competitors ... a lot of top rung employees would be hamstrung by NCCs (Non-compete clause) forcing them to move to another industry. Expect to be walked out, all of your communications locked down and your records / history to be searched for any signs of behaviour that might be detrimental to the company. Sure the idea of compensation does not apply ... but nor do a lot of things that are common in the AFL. I have been a high-up manager in a few big multi-nationals (not bragging, was actually the worst part of my working life and the bits I am least proud of) and I can tell you, the demands in terms of time and pressure to perform are massive. There are no guaranteed days-off, no choosing where you live, no ignoring phone calls because you are busy, no such thing as a bad time to come into the office, no "working hours" at all - it is ruthless. I wanted more control over my life so you know what I did - I left. This idea that in the real world PD would be able to flip-flop where ever he wanted and the AFL is restricting his trade is bulldust in my book. He has many more options than most employees have, including the option to pull up stumps and do something else that better matches his life choices. Comparing moving teams in the AFL to moving companies in the corporate world seems ridiculous to me.

So if we were to ask PD what he thinks AFC should get, he would say that pick 14 isn't fair. He would say AFC deserve more than that. Would he like that his new club is going to get a bit weaker because of it - no way - but he would also back in what he brings to more than compensate for whatever walks out. I reckon that is where a lot of AFC supporters are right now. We know we are losing a commodity with PD, but we want to be (and believe we can be) a stronger team come round 1 if we just stand up for our club and find a solution that sits closer to the middle.

TLDR - Geelong, just trade something half decent for PD and move on.

I think many will be surprised by the way Adelaide plays next season without Danger. The team looks to him too much, and his disposal is pretty average. Look at Hawthorn and their disposal efficiency compared to ours. We need to recruit players with decent disposal, losing a "one man army" wont hurt us as much as many seem to think

He's very good at finishing around goals though. Maybe not so much at pinpoint passing, which means he probably wouldn't be a good fit at Hawthorn.

I will put my tin foil hat on here and suggest that if we get Cockatoo, the trade last year with Geelong was all about ensuring Geelong get him ahead of WCE, Richmond and Freo who all picked similar players. Then hand him to us as part of this year's trade.

That would imply Geelong knew we would match at that early a stage.

Geelong hugely overpaid to get Stanley into the club. He's not going to be traded.
Agree on both points. Handing over pick 21 for Stanley last year was bizarre stuff from the Cats. Saints would have been 'starting the car', that's for sure.

Edit: Cats did get pick 60 back from the Saints as part of the deal.

Really ....maybe 5% chance

If Iam Geelong no way is he on the table after negotiating draft order last year to get him

And we need to be reminding them every step of the way of the massive favour we did them that allowed them to acquire him.
