No they could not have matched as well...there is this thing called the salary cap and Carltons is choccas...They had to choose between Betts or Thomas. To match you still need room in the cap yeah

Nope...the trade period comes after RFA deals so you would need the cap room for both otherwise AFL would not sign off on it

The free agency period starts before the trade period, and ends before the trade period does, but the two run concurrently for a number of days. It is possible to sign a free agent after completing a trade.

we have 9 spots this year and another 6 next year
cant fill those with picks 50 plus

I've seen this line of thinking from many Geelong fans and I agree that given the state of Geelong's list, it might be prudent to keep as many high draft picks as possible.

Having said that, why then would the club make an approach to one of the games best players and convince him to make a move if they don't have the ability to make that move happen. As far as I can see, the Cats need to either offer money the Crows simply can't match, thereby getting him for "free" or be willing to trade for him. I readily admit that we are likely to accept unders given his status as an uncontracted player. But the Cats don't get him for nothing just because they really want to keep their best draft picks and promising youngsters, and besides they want to trade for other players too.

I've stated multiple times that I think the most likely outcome is a trade being done - and done amicably - but if it does head south due to Geelong not offering anything remotely near his worth due to the reasons you outlined, then blame would rest entirely at the feet of the Cats. It's not the Crows fault that Geelong might have bollocksed their list management.

Wasn't aware of the over lapping but doesn't change much. If they matched Betts offer then he said he would have accepted their contract to stay.
Then they would not be able to get Daisy as not enough room left in the salary cap
They chose Daisy over Betts...so Mahlepi can stop trying to compare the situations.

Strange decision to recruit a gun player for effectively several picks/players when you need to fill plenty of spots. Would question your list management strategy!

Betts would have happily stayed at Carlton if they matched terms, Carlton were not prepared to. they didn't match because they didn't want him to accept.

Latest article on the Herald Sun says that if a trade isn't done then Dangerfield will nominate a 1 year contract to try and persuade other teams not to take him.

See this is just rubbish too and I hope Dangerfield, Geelong and Conners have worked this out.

Let's say you're Carlton and Dangerfield goes into the PSD (he can't nominate one year in the draft) with a one year contract. You pick up Dangerfield for nothing, he gets shitty at the club etc., the year ends and then what? Geelong have to TRADE for him!

So Carlton get all of that trade value for nothing. I know what I would do. It's business.
