Mean that if Patricks second option is to stay with the crows (if a deal can't be manufactured) then would the crows be happy to pay pick 14 for Danger and lose him for nothing in two years. Would any club? I think if you know you are going to get two years of danger at his peak the cost is worth it.
Don't want him or his missus around the club ever again. He made the call. He can live with it

Great article about how Hawthorn improved AFTER Buddy left in the age today.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...ed-by-losing-their-buddy-20150930-gjyfmt.html

Had the Hawks retained Buddy, as they initially wished, they would not have recruited Ben McEvoy or James Frawley, and the club knows they would have lost other valued players, plus depth.

The maths isn't Stephen Hawking stuff. The Hawks have saved a million dollar per annum in their salary cap by sacrificing Franklin. This saving allowed them to retain virtually every single player on their wanted list during and after 2013. The future would reveal Buddy as an unintended Hawthorn patriot.

That million dollar hole meant that no current or future A grader was lost, despite the rampant promiscuity unleashed by free agency. It helped the Hawks to create a depth that gave them a significant edge over competitors that had far more invested in fewer players - Sydney and Fremantle, in particular.

The question of whether the Hawks would have been so strong had Buddy stayed – as a $5 million man – brought complete consensus from rival club list managers. "No way," said one.

"Clearly not," added a second, while a third list manager from a non-Victorian club thought the response to Franklin's exit represented "the best list management in history."

Seems around about Dangerfield's worth.
Problem is, in these situations the team losing the player rarely gets their worth. See Hawthorn/Buddy. It won't be long before the compensation pick is removed completely and therefore we would get nothing. People need to be realistic in their expectations. If we can manufacture something better than pick 14, we've done well. If we can then turn that pick(s) into something even better - bonus.

The difference with this deal its a moving monster, Geelong have said they wont move from their pay structure, Adelaide only need to match which has been stated by Roo, they would . Then the situation changes to a position where a player wants to go to one club and the only way possible is via trade. He is arguably in the top 3 in the country. What would be a fair trade two first rounders? What would Nat Fyfe or Priddis be worth on the open market. What would you give up to get one of these players. That is the position we will find ourselves in.

Hawthorn/Buddy is irrelevant if we match though. If we match then Danger is just like any other out of contract player requesting a trade.

West Coast/Judd and Port/Burgoyne are much more relevant comparisons.

I hope you are joking???

If we only get pick 9 I will be livid at our incompetence.

Dayne Beams trade from last year is the most recent example of an elite player transferring clubs.

Pies got 5, 25, Crisp
Lions got Beams, 67

One Scenario that could arise if we matched which has been confirmed by Roo, and no deal can be reached with Geelong.

Who thinks PD would rather us trade him to the hawks with a chance of a flag or let him risk his hand in the PSD or ND and going to Carlton or Brisbane? Although he will need to agree to the trade, you wouldnt need to be a rocket scientist to work out that trade is better than the draft for PD.

Problem with trading with the Hawks is that their draft picks are lower than Geelong's, and what players would they offer up? Not convinced we'd get a better result trading with them.

If Geelong offer nothing of value then I would certainly be on the phone, even North Melbourne or Richmond, two clubs with potential to grab a flag and in Vic, may appeal to PD instead of the PSD or ND where Carlton, Brisbane, Melbourne or GC look like the potential suitors.

Brisbane get pick 5, pick 25 and Jack Crisp for Beams who requested a trade to Brisbane.

Adelaide will get ........ For Dangerfield who after we match will request a trade to Geelong.

Dangerfield>Beams Pay up Cats.

At bare minimum pick 9, next year pick probably top 10 again and Murdoch/Gregson (preferably Murdoch)

Probably the most relevant example to be honest.

Prima facie, Pies got early 1st round pick, early 2nd round pick, young promising player; Lions got marquee player, early 4th round pick.

Given Dangerfield is rated as a better player than Beams, we should be aiming for a similar trade as a minimum.

Was Beams a free agent?
Whether or not Beams was a free agent is really irrelevant, if we match Danger is no longer a free agent either, but I seem to recall that Beams still had a year left on his contract. Can anyone confirm this?

It does seem to be the best comparison for us though, Judd and Burgoyne are too long ago now to be a good comparison.

It is the fact that beams had a yr to run on his contract that means we won't get same deal

2 1st rounders will be the absolute most we get but prob this yrs pick 9 and a player like Murdoch

That's what I thought re Beams, thanks.

Was Beams a free agent?
Once you match, free agency is irrelevant as the player loses the free agent status. Beams was contracted from memory so not a great example.

Once we match, Dangerfield is just like another uncontracted player that wants to get to club of his choice who cannot threaten with the draft.

With all due respect Jenny, I hate this attitude. Such a response breeds mediocrity. Horrible defeatist attitude.
Dig your heels in.
