Agree with all of that apart from Jones. The boy showed what he can do in the latter half of the season.

Oh, I'm not saying he's a dud or anything. He did take a significant step forward this year, and maybe has found his position as a defender. But for a top 10 pick you're probably hoping for an A grade mid rather than a small defender. I can certainly see him carving out a solid career, but probably not a spectacular one.

I don't believe that in the slightest.

If Clarko wants Curtin, Clarko gets Curtin as they had three picks before pick 8. No one at North is risking his wrath seeing he's the only thing they have going for them.
I don't believe that, Clarko may be keen on a player but list management doesn't fall to the coach. He's locked into a 5 year contract, it's not like he's going to go having a hissy fit because he likes a player he's seen a couple of times and get somebody else.

It was interesting listening to BradScott yesterday say something similar, he may have his favourites but he knows to shut up, and concentrate on coaching, not watching 100s of hours of junior footage.

There is just no way clubs are stupid enough to leave it to the coach.

... and yet there are many documented examples of players being selected at the behest of the coach, against the express wishes of the recruitment team. Laurence Angwin is a prime example, from Adelaide's history - and there are many others.

Wasn't there a similar story around another of our picks... Gallucci, perhaps? I can't recall, but it has been mentioned here previously. Not sure how much is truth and how much is BigFooty urban myth.

So WCE actually offered their F1 to us and we knocked it back

It's actually quite funny some of the narrative in the story;

West Coast - we've been watching him for years and are desperate to get him - take our future, could be pick 1!!

Real life - Have pick 1 and don't pick Curtin

Yeah not for the past 10 years

Yeah it was Gallucci

Supposedly Hamish was keen on Tim English, but the decision was Gallucci was the better fit for list.

As Jarman3 has pointed out, it also happened with Gallucci, in 2016.
Yeah ok, I'm on board with that - I believe there's enough evidence that happened.

You could take that and consider that as evidence that the coach will get his way, or listen to Oglivy who says that the coach never has a say.

I also understand that not letting Nicks have a say is different from not letting Clarko have a say, but I'm more confident that the examples where it did happen are evidence that it rarely happens - they are exceptions, not rules.

The Gullucci example is more of a talent vs needs argument than an English vs Gullucci, as the direction was to go for speed not height. But considering Curtin as rated very talented vs McKershan/ Duursma as very talented, it is interesting what happened this time.

Whatever the truth as to why North didn't take Curtin, clearly in this case, Clarko did not get his way (if that's truly the position of Clarko), so the argument over exceptions is a bit moot.

I'm not wading into what Clarko did or didn't want. I'm just saying that it's not unusual for coaches to overrule recruiters, and that there are many examples of this happening throughout the history of the draft. I'm not saying that it did or didn't occur in this case.

Fair enough.

Interesting that Olgivy said on 5aa that he had never had a coach tell him who to recruit, made that point really clear.

You picked very well with Curtin

in terms of flight risk - relax. His father is a partner in a big 4 accounting firm and has lived in Adelaide, Perth, Jakarta and London. Travel to the family is an opportunity and adventure

He is a very good leader, worst ceiling is a taller Grant Birchall and he did spend loads of time as a midfielder who kicks goals (a la Bont)

Walters said Curtin was the best defender he played on

I am a Claremont member and alumni of his school so have had loads of input on how good he is.

We were offering you guys the Draper pick and you still took him. Speaks volumes
Thanks for the info. Very excited!!

First time in a long time I've been absolutely stoked with what we've done up top in the draft. Bloody fantastic outcome.
Were you not just as stoked when we picked up RT and Rachele? I won’t say Soligo as not many on here had any idea who he was at the time

I don't think I have been as excited about a draft pick since Danger or Phil Davis. This guy looks the goods.

An exciting pick up. I'm not concerned about his body language to be honest, I think it was more shock than disappointment.

I think having extended family in Adelaide will help abate any flight risk in a few years (not to mention the trajectory of the club over the next few seasons).

Extended family here is IMO a very huge telling factor in our favour.

Makes me a lot more comfortable with his selection.
