I think it is, its not that hard at all.

Like Rachele, its not like the kid hasnt played midfield footy before.

Curtin has never really played midfield before. The high performance team would be focussing on building his aerobic endurance, and resilience, all while trying to maintain and increase his strength and power, while also trying to manage his loads effectively. On top of that, he’s now got a long term knee injury to worry about.

There needs to be a level of caution shown here.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg. He is also still learning to play AFL footy with only 32 games to his name.

He is also going to miss out on building all the chemistry with the midfield group / ROB. Working on the setups / defensive structures etc.

He might be used as a Hail Mary in a game if we are desperate for a clearance.

Played most of his junior career in the midfield.

5 minutes a quarter isnt going to be beyond him, how else does he learn ??

I don’t think he’s referring to the development of the craft, but rather his physical preparedness for that role after a 3 month injury. Playing on a wing isn’t much less taxing in term of aerobic requirements and leg power required. He looked to conk out a bit towards back end of last season, which would have been expected. We would have wanted a full preseason to build on that.

I genuinely can’t lean either way in terms of what they’re going to do. Pre- injury it looked certain he was going to get stoppage minutes. I wonder if that might get put on the back burner till much later in the season, or shelved altogether for this year.

It may depend on what our season looks like at the time (it shouldn't matter IMO) and/or whether the likes of Rachele and maybe Dowling/Edwards or whoever takes that 5th bench spot goes.

Id still be throwing him in there but not on massive minutes

Hopefully Curtin can have impact like Thilthorpe after a long lay off.

He's a very important player, so no point risking in any way by bringing back to early. Just hope our season isn’t going off the rails leading to our selectors to panic.

Woulr like to think he comes back in with a mix of inside & outside midfield minutes, but would depend on how he goes in comeback sanfl game(s).

Wing has a high volume of running, but playing midfield is still much more physically demanding.

I think you’re right, how our season is going will play a part. Still unsure how the 23rd spot is available. Out Smith and Curtin, in Rankine and Ah Chee. Who else is going to be missing from our semi final 23?

My view is that Berry, Pedlar, Taylor and Hinge should be under fairly immediate pressure to perform. There’s a couple I don’t rate based on game style, but I know they’re both locked in regardless.

I’m half on Shorty’s side re SANFL. I think a half a game to get some genuine physical contact and blow out the cobwebs is enough. Then straight up to AFL with a managed workload. Rest Tex and play him as 3rd forward. He wasn’t much chop as 4th tall forward, but who would be?

Fair point. I’ve notified Australia’s peak wrestling body Wrestlers’r’us not to kick footballs as their hips may dislocate.

I guess the ‘humour’ was a bit cerebral. The poster I was responding to was AFCProphet. Prophet. You know, a ‘prophet’ that’s meant to be hooked up with someone who could help us out a bit.

Shorty said no SANFL & straight back in to the AFL side.

I said around 2 games... no issue only 1 game if goes well... but imo won't come straight into the side after long lay off. He will be lacking too much match fitness & not worth risking.

What clubs, including Adelaide, are very good at doing theses days, with the use of high tech training technology, is building fitness during extended recovery. While he won't be match fit, his fitness level will be quite good.

Explain to me the risk ??
Yeah, it's not like a player who has returned too early from injury before has got injured in their 1st game back due to a lack of conditioning.

I'm not going to have another pointless back & forward with you... but it's rare a player comes straight back into the AFL side after a long lay off.. & for good reason with a lack of match conditioning.

Reminds me of that fly on Nick’s head

I trust our fitness staff enough to have him right to go, if they do bring him straight in. And if they dont, then ill trust that decision too.

You're conservative, I get it... but if hes ready to play then hes ready to play AFL. 1 or 2 games in the SANFL isnt going to change a thing. Its a 3 month injury, not a 6 to 12 month one.
