In less than ten years Stynes went from never having kicked a footy to becoming the best player in the comp for a year (1991 was pretty unanimous). That's pretty great...
No premiership medal to show for it though....

Like Woodward, Bailey & Whitecross?
Bailey carried Hawthorns ruck through the 2013 season...
Resulting in a flag. Redid his ACL in the grand final win.
Severely underrated the effort a bloke of his size had to put in.
You're lucky I replied. Atleast with a discussion point. Thread seems to be going so so well.
No it's a discussion point that a bloke also did a knee 4 times and fought back and played what many would think was a similar level of footy. 17 regular season games including a flag.
So my opinion is.... while Menzel is of course a feel good story... To say his story is "far and away the best story in recent memory" is pretty far fetched. When a bloke did the same and went and won a flag.
I guess you must have a very short memory.
It's a good story but it's not "GREAT" until he has a premiership next o his name and it won't be this year.....................
What was "great" about Stynes, McCartney or M-T ?
You are clutching at straws because not everyone sees Menzel as the second coming of Jesus.......
Will Langford is 10 times the footballer Menzel is AND he has a premiership medal to prove it![]()

Menzel injured his knee?
Multiple times?
And had knee reconstructions?
this really should be mentioned more, I don't think enough people know!!![]()

Geez the Hawfies are a bit toey today aren't they? It's as if they realise their dreams of winning 4 in a row could come to a crashing halt today at the hands of the Geelong Football Club. It's all well and good to be a bit nervous fellas, but no need to proudly display your red raw, twitching bottoms to the good folk of BigFooty.![]()
When a player gets injured trying to injure another its got a bit of poetic justice
**** off campaigner!
This thread has nothing to do Hawthorn though. It's just that classic Hawforn insecurity shining through. I wish there were a thread where all the Hawfies could gather and share their red raw bottoms with each other so supporters of the other 17 teams didn't have to witness such a ghastly sight.Yeah hawks and cats posters over reacting on bigfooty - thats something new isnt it?
Having read the rest of the thread, there are a few who are recognised who could pull their heads in. It's not B13.EFA.
He's only one and not one often recognised on the Hawks board.
Menzel deserves his kudos, can't say I've been through anything like what he had, but I'm sure it tsked great courage to stick with it. Well done to the club for their faith and commitment too.

I can tell you are the life of the party...You can have the 'moral' victory
When a player gets injured trying to injure another its got a bit of poetic justice - see the eagles ruckman last night
WTF are you on about Pissy ?You can have the 'moral' victory

1. Hawthorn supporterHawthorn supporters trolling a thread discussing Menzels injury. Are they serious?
I think the point the OP was making, is that many players have made it back from difficult circumstances, but no one has made it back to be playing at the level that Menzel is.
He is one of Geelong's best players and the weeks when he is rested and fresh, he is playing at the level of an All Australian forward. He is a truly remarkable football talent, that has largely been lost to the game. I don't think we will ever know how good he could have been.
You only have to look at Morabito, who was a huge talent himself, to see the impact of 4 recos has on an explosive talent.
Without the knees, I would think Menzel would be a midfielder, resting forward and probably be one of the very best players in the league. I think his achievements this year, have been undersold a little bit.
This most definitely didn't happen, but I don't know if you remember the 2008 Grand Final but Geelong supporters were cheering when Croad went off whit his footy..They did cheer en masse when he did his knee.
Still the most pathetic thing I've seen from a crowd at the footy.
