You play football to win premierships, individual merits and awards mean nothing!
Greg Madigan played in the Hawks 89 flag, his stat line involved no number other than 0. He went on to play 66 games, kick 6 goals and average about 8 touches a game before being picked up by Freo before their first game only to be delisted and never play AFL again

In comparison Robert Harvey played 383 games, kicked 215 goals, won 2 Brownlow's back to back, represented the Big V 8 times, 1x MVP, 8x AA, 4x B&F and whole host of other top flight accolades but in the one Grand Final he contested in, his team lost despite Harvey's 36 touches to be easily his teams best player.

But if we use your logic, Greg Madigan was a better player than Robert Harvey.

:drunk:

it was Puopolo and it wasn't even an attempt to bump, both players were chasing a ball, Menzel barely even made contact and grabbed his knee before he even hit the ground. I'd advise your don't post unless you know what you're talking about.

Was at the ground. Looked like a bump from where I was sitting which was much further around the ground. Could see how that footage would also look like a bump even much closer to the incident in fast motion too. In fact your footage makes it look exactly like it was Menzel instigating the contact from behind against Puopolo who had got in front of Menzel in the contest.

The hawks flog supporters cheered his injury. Go to 1:24 here

Went to 1:24. saw no footage of Hawthorn supporters cheering his injury. Never happened. The cheers were for Menzel coming off second best in the contest for the ball , had nothing to do with the injury. Only a complete flog would suggest otherwise.

In any case, his comeback is thread worthy IMO given what he's been through.

Is English your second language? The footage clearly shows Menzel grabbing his knee before he even hits the deck. You knew straight away he'd hurt himself.

Stop sticking up for your teams flog supporters, we all know they cheered and you're making yourself look like a twat by trying to defend it.

I was on the other side of the ground, and it was clear he'd done something serious when he went down. I think that's a pretty poor excuse.

I was at the ground but close to the goals , so a fair distance away, and it was not obvious at all that something serious had happened until well after the contact was made, and he hadn't got up. You can see on the video he clutched his knee, but I doubt you could see that very clearly unless you were right on the boundary where the incident happened, certainly it wasn't noticeable where I was. Nobody was cheering when the stretcher came out, at least not in the Hawthorn section of the crowd I was in. My take on it during the game was the Hawthorn fans were cheering our player having won a physical encounter with his opponent. People STFU pretty quickly when the seriousness of the issue became obvious.

What is it with Hawthorn supporters that you cannot discuss a Geelong player without them pissing their pants?
Didn't he come back a year ago?
Excuse me for not fawning over a player because he's been injured a few times.
Good on him for coming back, but i've heard about what a 'great story' it is for the last year and don't particularly care.
What's Geelongs obsession with needing to be liked?

No, but you strike me as the kind of fellow who would hold it against me if it was.

Yes, the slow-mo footage from the camera closest to the incident shows him going for his knee. I'm sure even a simpleton like you can understand that this is not the view those at the ground had.

Stop sticking up for your teams flog supporters, we all know they cheered and you're making yourself look like a twat by trying to defend it.

I'm guessing from your reliance on the footage, that you were not at the game, and have zero idea what went on. The crowd cheered a contest, not the injury.

No surprise we see it differently, but I agree that nobody was cheering when the stretcher came out.

Oh, was this thread started by a Geelong supporter? I could have sworn it was started by a neutral who was happy to see Menzel back in the finals followed by a bunch of moronic comments from Hawthorn flogs trying to downplay his achievements

I was there, I do apologise for not having magical powers, but unfortunately I can't take you back in time to show you what happened in real time - I can only rely on video.

Which is a pity, because the video shows zero cheering of his injury. What makes you so sure they were cheering his injury and not the fact he fell over after making contact with a Hawthorn player?

So Hawthorn didn't have a good player in the first 36 years of their history? Premierships are the goal of good players but they are not the defining characteristic of them. Not every great player has won a premiership and not every premiership player has been good. Do you want me to draw a Venn diagram?

Ok this is the third time I'm having to explain this and I'm aware English is your first language - so you have learning difficulties, which I will take into account when speaking to you.

I showed you that footage to demonstrate that Daniel Menzel (the Geelong Cats player) grabbed his knee as soon as he made any contact with Paul Puopolo (the Hawthorn Hawks player). He brought his knee close to his body and held it in his hands before he even reach the ground (the green part on the screen). As such, this indicated that he had injured himself in possibly a severe manner. Members of the crowd, who likely support Hawthorn Hawks then proceeded to boo and cheer the player as he hit the ground and lay there holding his knee, quite obviously in pain.

Do you understand now?

This is a complete wank of an interpretation of what happened. Yes, the Hawthorn crowd cheered when he went down because he'd come off second best in an attempt to bump one of our players (forget who it was now). They had no idea he'd injured his knee, as it just looked like he'd lost a physical contest he himself had instigated. They were not cheering his injury, and the cheers stopped as soon as it was obvious he had seriously hurt his knee.

Good to see him back, and hopefully he gets through tonight's game unscathed, although I can't wish he has a great game :)

No this is a wank of an interpretation. You don't hear cheers like that for a one-on-one contest often...

100% agree, great story to defy the odds and return to play at the level he has.

Clay Smith needs some recognition too, bloke has done 3 ACLs in his short career and completely flew under the radar to become a vital member of our 22.

But god forbid the media mention it, the sobrave campaigners will have another reason to whinge.
Didn't he have a massive media story when cats played dogs on channel 7? Answer yes he did it took up the whole half time break

I don't get why dogs always tear it about injuries, every team gets em

Excuse me for not fawning over a player because he's been injured a few times.

He did his ACL 5 years ago and was roundly cheered by Hawthorn supporters as he limped off the ground.
4 knee recos later he is playing his first final.

You don't have to fawn, but you don't have to act like a dick either.

His achievements? He came back from injury...
Well done to him but he didn't die and come back from the dead to play in a final five years later on the exact day, against the same team that crucified him.
He's a Geelong player don't get so offended that other teams supporters don't care as much as you.

Don't you cheer when other teams players are injured and they go off?
It's to wish them well in their recovery, I hate Geelong as much as the next Hawthorn supporter but to accuse us of cheering that player got injured is blasphemy.
Time to take off your eyepatch and perhaps see the AFL with two eyes instead of one

How exactly do we "tear" it? Its not our fault the media have played that card. If you're referring to the coach supporting his injured players in a press conference, god forbid an injured player receives some words of support from the coach. And you know what? Never this season have we used injuries as an excuse, instead pushed on for finals and managed to win 1.

Remind me to have a whinge the next time Paddy McCartin's concussion and whatever else issues keep getting brought up ad nauseam.

Yet still had to post in this thread.
You Hawk dicks do know you don't have to post in every thread, right ?

'Jeered' might be a better word.
I was there - saw it with my own eyes.
