Just wanted to get the views of pies supporters regarding this kid. He is touted as being a possibility forus at pick 30 and im starting to warm to him.

I would love it is someone like Gysberts, Griffiths or Christensen slipped to pick 30 but the likelyhood of it happening is slim. There is also big talk that we are going to get Thomas although i'm not 100% sure if he is pick 30 worth :s

This kid is 185cm and he is hard at the ball! He plays as a sweeper off half-back, but he has the capabilities of playing through the midfield in the future. He has been likened to Luke Hodge in the way he plays and he is regarded as a super kick able to hit targets at will and an excellent decision-maker coming out of defence. He is also able to lock down an opponent - as such i could see him playing a tagging role in defence or even on the ball if his endurance picks up.

would people be happy with him at pick 30???
 
Sounds like an Okay player but we have a Few of Those Types in:

-Blight

Nice idea but I tend to agree with Tradedraft.

If you want a small back pocket type to release Harry O'Brien from the crumbing forward types I suggest Andrew Hooper at 62 if available would be a nice pick.

Otherwise Shane Page in the rookie draft I think would be a nice one.

I wouldn't be happy with him at 30 and the only similarity between him and Hodge is the position they can play. Apart from that there's not one thing about him that reminds me of Luke Hodge.

Yep pick 30 was Luke Ball. I was so stoked when we nabbed Ball. Pick 29 was Luke "somebody?" to the Lions and made my heart jump. Menzel is an absolute gun, would love him at the Pies no doubt, but Ball was an indispensable cog in our premiership. You just wouldn't alter the decision to recruit him for anything.

We drafted him well before Collingwood could even consider picking him.

What pick did you draft him at?

It's difficult to tell which way we would have gone in the hypothetical Ball wasn't available because we were obviously committed to drafting him.

You're right no guarantee (or probability) we would have gotten him anyway. Good get for G-town though. Between him Duncan and Vardy you have some quality reinvigorating the list.

Obviously he wouldn't have gotten to us anyway.

I still wonder whether people would have been able to live with Hannebery instead of Beams. :p

Definitely. Hannebery would have been so hyped up by now that we couldn't fathom not having him. Just like Beams now. Really though, both are fantastic young players and I honestly can't split them.
 
It is quite funny that you guys looked so hard at him given how similar a player he is to another guy you looked at, Steve Johnson.

Obviously Menzel played a fair bit of defence in his junior days but he is such a natural forward too. A real utility. Delighted we got him.

Lol, Josh Thomas wasn't even our next pick after pick 30, I think it's safe to say he wouldn't have been the one we went with if Ball was gone.


On Menzel, I went down to the Cattery last year (or maybe it was 2009?) to watch our VFL side play and he kicked 3 or 4 in a losing side that day. I was frothing at the mouth about him, he looked well and truly a class above. While everyone was raving about Duncan last year, I was just waiting expectantly for Menzel to come into the AFL side.

Luke Rounds played really well on a HFF that day as well actually, I walked away that day thinking he'd definitely make it at AFL level. Hasn't had a great year, but I'm maintaining the faith.
