Voss has gotten into a habit of bringing players back too early. To be honest, if merrett plays, we are still likely to get belted, i think i'd rather him have this week off, then the break. He will come back for the second half of the season fit, and hopefully help us in our finals bid.

From the sounds of it, he hasn't been rushed back anyway. IF, and it's a bit IF, he has been training well the last 2 weeks, then i don't have a problem with it. If it's a case of this is his first week back into training, then i would have concerns.

I think the fact that he had an initial injury, than had a setback would mean they took it a bit easy with him as well. He has been out for more weeks since the 'setback' than he has for the initial injury. We really need some leadership down back, so it would good to have one of the VC back in the team.

He needed a run. In an ideal world it would have been in the reserves but with our injury list even an underdone Merrett was the best option we had.

Sad that he was placed in this situation but that is our season for you. Anything that can go wrong, is.

I didn't see the game, but i'm guessing the dogs kicking into Hall was at least half decent, so it probably would have been a hard day at the office no matter what for Merrett. Sounded like one way traffic, not fun when your a FB.

Yeah. While Merrett looked average, our only other options would have been Patfull and Brennan and they would have been simply outmuscled as Hall took marks on the opposite side of his body from them.

Merrett was beaten by blockbusting Bulldogs forward Barry Hall last weekend but he wasn't the only Brisbane player to be embarrassed in a mauling that left the Lions' faint finals aspirations in tatters.

Lions fullback Daniel Merrett has reviewed a videotape of Riewoldt's breakout performance and has decided brute force is the best way to stop the Richmond young gun. Merrett insists he will be better for the run last week after returning from six weeks out with a hamstring injury and has put his hand up to stop the rampaging Tiger club.

I think it demonstrates how little value the stat actually has. Although I suppose it indicates that Merrett and his team mates are getting better are working within his limitations.

Finding touch

Players often have extended periods of time out with injury and when they come back there is an expectation that they’ll just be fine and be just like the way they were before. Daniel Merrett is back in the side for the Brisbane Lions and has had a few games back but he just doesn’t have the touch. He hasn’t got the game sense or the awareness of someone who has played all season. He is playing like someone who needs a few games to find his way. In general, players will need a few games back before they are back playing at their best. Very few players can play well first up.

Lions worked hard to stop Riewoldt

BRISBANE Lions vice captain Daniel Merrett stood shoulder-to-shoulder with returning St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt on Saturday night and did an outstanding job. Merrett said the Lions put a lot of work into stopping Riewoldt once they knew he was playing.

“We thought with training he’s probably done a lot of running and not a lot of body contact and that’s probably the way we try to defend anyway, not make it an athletics carnival but pressure our opponents."

I thought that Merrett's game went unnoticed on Sat night. Sure, Riewoldt was rusty but, despite playing deep forward, he got his marks in not so dangerous places. Credit to Merrett.

Dropped 1 sitter that cost us a goal, but the rest was back to his best, IMO. We need Rog playing well for our defence to function properly. Luck with Goose this week & we will be approaching normality.

Wasn't great. The rest of the team certainly didn't help. Would have liked to see a change made, just so he could maybe collect himself for 10 minutes. Wasn't his usual self.

As vice captain he should be setting the example. It's important for your leaders to stand tall in troubled times. Normally Merrett is a very consistent performer, but on this occaison the only cool head in our back 6 was Maguire.

Leigh Matthews mentioned in a recent interview that when Merrett got the ball you never knew what would happen. But now we do, he turns it over to the opposition. He does not have an innate ability to play Aussie Rules. and it's showing.

lol. Poor guy's missed a lot of the year and has one game where nothing went right for him. knee jerk reaction???

Tony Shaw reckons he should be dropped. As vice captain I can't see it happening, but we probably have too many talls in the side at the moment. With Staker and Maguire there he's not as indespensible as he was in previous years.
