Oh jesus! 3 of the top 5 spots! I didn't realise, and two of them from this year alone. If he keeps this up he really be a definate for AA.

I'm not so sure. His mistakes will probably be more memorable than his ability to get to a heap of contests. Although a stat like this may encourage the AA selectors to watch a few Brisbane games.

If he continues to play with the same intensity and physical presence he will make a huge run for AA honors. His physical game definately rattled Nick who was playing in his shell by the end of the game

I doubt it. When Mal Michael was far and away the best full back in the league for 3 years running, not even he could get a selection, remembering that Matthw Pavlich was named one year as a full back when he didn't even play in that position all year.

Yeah, forgot to say if he could iron out those crucial clangers, than he'd be a shoe in, whereas now he would be around the 40 (or however many) player shortlist.

yeah good point. But I guess with a different panal these days there is hope

Luke Power

One of the key match-ups this Saturday night will see in-form Lions full-back Daniel Merrett lining up against reigning Coleman Medallist Jack Riewoldt who currently sits second on the goal-kicking tally in 2011.

“Daniel has been terrific. I think he’s been one of our best players all year,” Power said of Merrett.

“I’m sure he’ll be priming himself for that job (on Riewoldt) and he’ll do really well.”

“His aggression and the way he’s held things up back there have been fantastic for us. He’s shown great leadership.”

This week you would probably suggest Jack (Riewoldt) is going to play closer to goal (than Nick Riewoldt). Daniel Merrett’s our full back and has been in sparkling form, probably All Australian form so far in the first four games we’ve played, so you would think that he would get the first crack, and as long as he doesn’t allow Jack to jump at the footy he’s going to be in that same frame of form that he’s shown in the first four weeks.

Lions vice-captain Merrett matches up with Riewoldt better than most but still faces one of the toughest tasks in the game.

''(Merrett) is well equipped to handle this task for us,'' Voss said.

"It's going to be a great battle and an absorbing battle - a contest that I'm sure a lot of people will be taking notice of.''

Round 6 vs Richmond

WANT to know what turned this game? Go straight to the ''Sauce''. Daniel Merrett, the man who carries the nickname for being the epitome of Big Red, might feel aggrieved about finding himself at the centre of the defining moment.

With about a minute left in the third term, and a resurgent Brisbane leading by five points, Merrett surged around the back flank and unloaded, kicking it out of bounds on the wing.

But he was pinged by the umpire for crossing the line before he kicked. There would be no boundary throw-in, but a free to Richmond's Jack Riewoldt for deliberate out of bounds where Merrett connected.

With one contentious blow of a whistle, the momentum had swung.

10 Things I liked:

4. Daniel Merrett decision

Hear me out. Merrett has played for 108 games in this, his seventh season, and for all of it has played within the white lines. He can time a run to spoil a ball in a pack of five players and he can judge wobbly punts and mark them under pressure. On Saturday night he ran over the boundary line with the ball, was pinged, and Jack Riewoldt kicked the goal. Struggling to give Merrett the benefit of the doubt on this one.

"he can judge wobbly punts and mark them under pressure"

Can he? News to me.

He seems to be able to as of Round 1 this year. The number of marks from opposing kicks must be way up for Merrett and I've been left with my heart in my mouth based off previous years' experiences with his marking, only to see him take a clean mark. I definitely noticed it in the Freo and Saints games.

Throughout his career when faced with important marks (ie. where if he drops them it will result in a good chance of an opposition goal) he has tended to drop them. Even against Richmond his easiest possession was a slow floating uncontested kick straight to him, and he almost made a meal of it.

I think when he has time to think, he loses concentration (probably thinking about what will happen if he misses), and consequently coordination. When things are happening too quickly for him to try and sum up the situation, he is more reliable.

Round 7 vs Gold Coast

A desperate Voss rang the changes in the third quarter, finally moving his best defender, Daniel Merrett, back to his rightful place at full-back - after inexplicably starting him forward.

Voss said the Lions were struggling to mark the ball inside the forward 50 and that's why he tried Daniel Merrett up forward.

He (McGrath) switched with Daniel Merrett in the second half after the regular defender's full forward experiment bombed.

Voss's masterstroke was to put Daniel Merrett, the best spoiling defender in the competition, at full-forward.

Brisbane's defence was a shambles, which could highlight the organisational work Merrett does.

Merrett's move back to his customary position stopped the bleeding and dragged the Lions back into the contest.

Lions players hurting after loss

“It definitely hurt,” Merrett said at the team’s recovery session on Sunday.

“I didn’t get much sleep after the game. I just laid there running the game through my head about a million times.”

In a surprise move, Merrett started the match up forward but was forced back to his regular position at full-back after the Lions were under siege early.

“I was put up forward to make a contest, but the ball never really came down in that first quarter so it’s a bit hard to judge (whether it was a successful move),” Merrett said.

Never thought I'd be suggesting this, but Merrett has added some attack to his spoiling game. The ball is spending plenty of time in the Lions' backline and don't expect Michael Voss to spring his Merrett-as-a-forward surprise again any time soon.

Gary O'Donnell

O'Donnell said the Lions would start Daniel Merrett in his customary fullback position after an experiment playing him as a forward against the Suns failed, but had not ruled out the possibility of playing him there again in the future.

This guy is a monster, i really love his spoiling and body strength. Probably the standout for you guys on Sat night.

Good. The less he is recognised the better;)

They don't do a very good job of recognising Brisbane fullbacks down south. Explains why Mal never won an All Australian.

To be fair while Merrett is in super form it's probably the first time we have really seen him take marks and back himself a bit. Usually he just tries to rip the bladder out of the ball with his rusty fist. If he keeps his current form up I would expect him to make these sort of lists at years end.

On a side note isn't Hooker a midfielder? Also it looks like Lloyd was just being lazy cause hes just picked Collingwood and Geelongs backline.

Meh

Ep. 10 STIFF NECK: The sad story of Brisbane Lions full-back Daniel "Sauce" Merrett.

Watches goal after goal go over his head. Then when he gets the chance to rule the defence and straighten the neck against the lowly Suns, he's thrown forward.
Rather harsh.
