Rich an Eagle in 2012?

Watching the NAB Cup last night would have been pretty depressing if you were a Brisbane Lions supporter and even more depressing if you were a Brisbane Lions Player.

Daniel Rich was probably the only shining light in the Lions team, consequently he received plenty of physical attention from the opposition.

It may be too early in the season to call the Lions a 'sinking ship', but with the mass departures of players and coaches recently it is easy to conclude that many people want off this ship.

The 2011 draft may be one where we decide to stock up on talent, similar to Stenglien and Chick trades - Rich is the perfect Candidate;

  • WA based family
  • Followed WCE as youngster
  • Tired of Lions culture and morale
  • Former teammates at WCE - Nic Nat, Swift...
  • Tired of being physically targeted by opposition
  • Out of Contract at end of 2011

We have all spoken about this in the past but you cant argue, the planets are aligning and Rich could conceivably be at WCE by the end of 2011.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

Unless he demanded a trade it won't happen as the club never aggressively pursues players from other teams.

..and even then Freo has always proven to be more likely to get a trade to work.

He'd also probably get even more hammered in a WCE midfield, so that's really a moot point.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

Way to early for threads like this, and besides, Lions will lose Power, Black and Fevola. We'll never be able to match the coin that the Lions and GWS offer him.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

To be honest i dont really even want him. At-least for the price he would hold. We have enough young quality inside mids its actually ridiculous. Shuey, masten, ebert, swift, stevens, scooter. There's too many to count. So unless we traded off say ebert and something else for rich i would be ohk with it but we really should be looking at outside talent.

Gaff and sheppard are our only good young outside players really. Would love a polec/hill type player.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

As he is out of contract, won't Western Sydney get him? They have more to offer in draft picks/salary. If he walks they have first picks in the draft.

Gaff? The jury is still out on this kid and Sheppard for that matter

Rich is not an inside mid, which is not to say he can't get his own ball but he's not best when he's at the bottom of packs. Why do you think Brissie were trying to free him up behind the centre? to get the ball in his hands and out of traffic. He tried 3 little chip kicks at one point and I was thinking, Daniel, that's a waste of your left boot.

I see what your saying but i tend to disagree. Most of his football has been played on ball getting in and under packs (thats where i reckon his best has been). He lacks the fitness and pace to be a truly effective and damaging outside player. The kick is his only outside weapon and admittedly very good. If we nabbed him we would play him on ball though.
He would just take the place of say a swift, ebert or stevens. I think we would get more benefit to the team by adding lewis jetta. He adds something we have none of.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

Would only trade for Rich if Ebert was involved. Otherwise a big DO NOT WANT. Too slow for todays game im afraid. Dockers made a BRILLIANT decision in passing him up. Best decision they have ever made infact.

Ebert + Pick 12. Better than anything they would get from the AFL as compensation or Freo.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

i think if he was picked up on the cheap, its all good, cant see that happening tho,so wouldnt bother.
with our young midfield improving would make any big trades this yr ,if we want a mid who can kick like rich move hurn out of the backline
also think its better to make a big play for 1 or 2 of the young west aussies in the draft just gone.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

Would love Rich, imagine him delivering I50 - brilliant. Actually, I was really impressed with Polec last night too. Still think he would have offered us a fair bit as a goal kicking outside mid.

Re: Rich an Eagle in 2012?

While i think gaff will be a very good player my belief still hasnt changed. I still think polec or heppell would have been a better option. I think heppell will be amazing long term and polec will just be genuine class from day dot.

Agree, id rather have polec than gaff, polec has that x factor that Judd brought to the club.
Gaff reminds me of a masten/ebert.

I think we got the player that the club targeted I had mixed feelings as well but didn`t want to dwell in the should`aves and could`aves .

polec and heppell played on each other ,with polec having no defencive side to his game ,heppell got a heap of loose balls ,Polec did kick a nice goal though.Gaff will be elite i think.
