He doesn't break lines so isn't perfect for us. replace his name with any of the above mentioned and it looks better and even more diverse.

Not keen on sheppard are we? Sheppard>Rich
We have others to do that. Rich is an awesome kick with good vision and a great footy brain.
He was tagged all year last year, not bad for a second year player.
As Carlton can testify, Rich is quality.
FS - you are absolutely correct EXCEPT his 2nd season was almost as good its just brissie's was worse so it didnt stand out.

Seriously guys, are any of you saying that if Rich was available you wouldnt make a play for him if you were WC ?

He is a seriously good footballer that would be a welcome addition in ANY midfield let alone one that lacks A grade polished footballers like WC's.

If WC finish with #12ish and could get Rich with this pick there would be Moet being cracked in every room of Worsfold's house.
Have to agree with every word Bond.:thumbsu:

Paul Roos & trading:
Over my eight years of senior coaching, I was continually amazed at how little preparation some clubs had done in what is arguably the most important week of the year.

Look at the past several years and you will see Collingwood identified they needed Jolly and Luke Ball, Geelong required Brad Ottens and Cam Mooney, Hawthorn Trent Croad, Brent Guerra, Stuart Dew - and all these players have had a significant impact on winning premierships for their respective clubs. St Kilda, like Sydney, has also done an outstanding job through trades.

But for every club that acted out a clear plan in trade week, there were teams that seemed to have no direction, strategy or understanding of what the week can provide.

Do we have direction?

With the 3 x West Aussies out of contract at years end & GWS in the market, lets hope we have direction whether its Rich, Clarke or Lewy or ...

I don't think he is perfect for us anyway.

Kids we should be chasing

1. Bennell
2. Matera
3. Yarran
4. L Jetta
5. Then Rich

Not gonna bother with swallow he's too good to get close to.

I do think we are gonna need to nab another very highly rated young mid. Atm i think our developing midfield might not be quite good enough to win a premiership in the future.

If one is available and the other isn't you have to take what you can get

As Kane said, Bennell has a contract for at least the next 2 years, Rich is apparently available now. So it isnt really a fair comparrison.

Exactly, Rich is out of contract and the others aren't so whats the point in comparing them?

Eagles lack class in the midfield and Rich adds class.

If the deal can be done we'd be crazy to not go for him. We over looked Rich for Naitanui with pick 2, if we paid pick 12 for Rich 3 years later we are laughing all the way.:thumbsu:

Now it seems like Clark is waiting and seeing, according to this headline on the AFL website: Calrk Suspends Contract Negotiations

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/108803/default.aspx

It talks about a growing list of players waiting until the end of the season to do their contracts, of course connecting them with the GWS entry into the AFL. I guess now that Scully has said he hasn't been approached by GWS they need to find other targets. :p

The question is: Would you chase Rich or Clark? Personally, I feel Rich is a better fit but another big forward may not go astray?

Rich's second season stats were better then he's first I believe. Quality young player who if stays available we must go for. If we can get him to nominate us and only us that would be great.

If we only get four or less wins this year do we get a good priority pick?

Eagles are also linked to C Yarran as a pre - draft 17 yr old from GWS , which requires us to give a player or pick to GWS , so if Rich is West Coast bound we could be busy . But wait Woosha doesnt like trading , has blind faith in our squad so we will do sqiddly Did ( nothing ) unless we have a bad year and a new coach :o

Hasn't he traded players almost every year?

I'm not a fan of trading for tradings sake, we're in a position where we just have to keeping building from the bottom. Not many players worth chasing have been available anyway.

I remember people wanting us trade pick 26 for Josh Hill or Andrew Krakouer.....Some even wanted Motlop. Jack Darling or one of them?? Jack every time.

There is no quick fix, just keep building with youth. Would obviously be different with Rich though if he's available as he fits in with the majority of our future core (age wise) and is a gun.

Well said, trading in the mature age players like Hill, Krakouer and Motlop should only be done if your topping up for a premiership tilt or if the price is dirt cheap. Pick 26 was well over the odds for any of them and we look like we nabbed a beauty in Darling

If we want rich we are going to be looking at either 2 first rounders, A first round and a player or maybe our first and second rounders plus some steak knives.

He should be playing in our jumper now and would've been but for the stupidity of those who could've done something about it at the time.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn!!!

I know I'm going to regret asking, but how so?

He most likely means we should have traded Kerr back in 08 to Carlton for Pick 6 to get Rich.

If he nominates us we won't be paying that, all we need to do is out bit a end of first round compo pick thebLions would get if he went to GWS, which would be pick 28 this year or 19 > 20 in coming years. If we had a pick 12 that would be enough, a fringe player looking for further opportunity may be a sweetener.

If Freo are chasing him and we have a bidding war he will cost more.

Hindsight as they, is 20/20.

We had just lost Cuz, Judd...was no way we were going to trade Kerr too.

Kerr was an injury prone crab then and still is plus he had on field disciplinary lapses because he couldn't handle the pressure. To not unload him, when we could have gotten a first round pick, will go down as one of the biggest **** ups in our recent history.
Hindsight has nothing to do with even Stevie Wonder could've seen that solution.

Pick 4 for Rich was a rumour last season , Eagles or Brissy never went through with trade ??
would've been a big trade. gaff for rich?? impossible to say at this moment.

interesting article from paul roos. i remember saying on here some time ago that we should be preparing for trade week from before the season starts but a few people reckoned that is a waste of time.

there is going to be a lot of movement over the next couple of years with GWS still to come in then the restricted free agency will come in.

there have been several quality WA boys whom we haven't been able to pick up in the past couple of years that we should be looking at. obviously we can't get them all, but we should be putting in the work and research and what we require to get a hold of one or two.
