Fellow BF posters.

With the unfortunate injury of Liam Jurrah, if we are looking at elevating someone to help out in the forward line, how about we give Danny Hughes a run before Juice? Injury have ravaged his career so far and it looks like he is starting to get his body right. Kicked 20 goals in 12 games for casey last year.

I doubt there will be any elevations now there is talk about Col Garland doing a stint up forward but if you had to choose a forward to elevated would you go Hughes or Juice?

Good call, I think this week he should be given an opportunity to show his stuff... If he shows a little bit, then elevate him, otherwise why have we kept him on the list...

He must have a fair bit of ability to have been given the extended time to get fit, it is not offered to many other players at any club....

That's exactly what I was thinking. He must have shown something for the footy dept to re rookie him knowing his injury problems.

I'm assuming Jurrah will go on the long term injury list which will mean we can elevate a rookie. I'm guessing it's between Hughes and Newton for that spot. We need a forward who can kick goals, and both are capable and shown promising things at Casey. Wouldn't be against Hughes being promoted, but I feel Newton will help our structure more if we plonked him at full forward. But I dare say one of these boys will get one last shot to impress on thebigstage for a number of weeks, we can only hope as supporters, that whoever it is makes the most of it...

We also have Gawn/ Tapscott who can also be put on the LTI list. I would be promoting the players who deserve it. At this stage Jordie Mckenzie should be promoted has been playing well of late. If juice on sat and kicks some goals probably promote him as well.

Ive given up on hughes think we have enough of his type Petterd being very similar and his return last year at Casey wasnt good enough.

Its a nice idea. However each time a player is placed on the senior list (as a result of a LTI) it costs $15K so the club would need to consider any elevations with due regard. Though I like the OP's thinking.

Whilst $15k is a lot of money the MFC is a business and as such need to spend money to make money. Yes it needs to be done wisely for mine $30k to elevate a couple of rookies for Jurrah and Morton is money well spent. Particularly if we find out a bit about Hughes and/or McKenzie etc.

Has Hughes played in any of the practice matches? I didn't think that he had?
He hasn't but is named in the squad to play this week.

My thoughts on rookies are promote them when (and only when) they are going to play. So if Spencer and McKenzie are in for round 1 selection they deserve promotion. If not then leave them until they are. Same goes Hughes. If he deserves a go then I'm all for it.

I like Danny at VFL level, but realistically hes just another half forward flanker - the last thing we need. Hes 24 or 25 as well.

Hes got decent skills and some x-factor but hes not physical enough for AFL and injuries aside, hasnt shown the consistancy required for the promotion imo.

McKenzie is surely a long way ahead of the others for promotion.

Hughes has some class and polish about him. Went to a few Sandringham games a couple of years ago and he was impressive enough. Not sure if it could translate into the AFL but he you would assume he couldn't be any worse than Newton.

I agree with Bartram Class though, surely Jordie should get first crack at the LTI of Jurrah. Did nothing wrong when called upon late last year will add some dash and run through the lines, a department we struggle in.

He is only 186 cm hardly the answer to our forward line issues. A good VFL player and after 3 years of development at melbourne plus another year he was not on our list but still under the eye of the club, he needed to show a lot more.

McKenzie is the best prospect on our rookie list, however we need a forward and Newton is the most logical choice to promote of the rookie list.

I thought Garland was playing a practice match for Casey this week??

He is, i deleted that part of my post once i read the article on the MFC website. Good news for all! Hopefully we can find out what position he played in.

What are you on about?

Jordie is not the player you describe at all. He is exactly the opposite. He's an extractor, tough inside midfielder. Clean hands, Tall rangy, has unusually long arms and good vision. Not super quick and def not a run through lines player.

Mckenzie and Spencer to be elevated. Don't waste money on the rest.

Agreed, McKenzie isn't really gifted as an athlete, but makes up for it with his hardness and clean hands on the inside.

He's a clever footballer, but he definitely won't add much run and carry to the side.

I think this is the crux of it.

We are after that final link in the chain and Newton is more moulded to this than Hughes. Having said that I think Newton is a last resort. Surely we have some stocks (Garland or Dunn) who can give it a shake first before more desperate measures.

McKenzie is a shoe in for elevation, not only has he played well enough but the club has made no secret of the fact that he is a part of future plans. Spencer will be a probable necessity as well.

Guys! I think he might of just been elevated or told the good news.

Found this comment on his FB a minute ago.

*********: Well done...you are back in...we're so very proud. Now go show them how good you are!!! ;o) Best wishes. *********

*********: Finally bro, Kick arse!

Sounds like he's just been told.

GUYS!

That comment on his FB has since been deleted. Looks like the cat is out of the bag, Danny Hughes will be elevated this year.:thumbsu:

Are you sure he hasn't just been selected to play against West Coast this weekend?
Pretty sure that is what it would be. Why would we elevate a guy before he even gets a game. But if he is playing I will take particular notice to how he plays. As for him just being another flanker - I know the circumstances are different - but before he played I bet most Port supporters thought Josh Mahoney was just another flanker for Port but gee he was handy in their premiership year.

He runs in a straight line, takes on tacklers and kicks it long. Jordie breaks lines by taking on the tackler, he doesnt seem to go sideways or backwards IMO.

Really excited about this! Hughes has all the tools to be a damaging AFL footballer, his body just hasn't allowed him to.

I think the club must rate him highly too, considering they've stuck by him and re-rookied him as a 23yo.

As for the argument that he's only a flanker, well that might be true, but we need all the attacking power we can get at the moment!
