Dare I bring it up... umpires

Three incidents that leap to my mind:

- O'Bree 50m penalty
- Hunt holding the man against Rusling (end of 2nd quarter - I lost it)
- The final free kick against Harley

Umpiring was woeful, but it evened out by the end of the game. Was a great contest even if the skills were ordinary. Probably would've been a better contest if not for the stupid decisions.

That performance by Scott McLaren was on par. Have said he is the worst umpire for the last few years, yet continues to get a gig. It seems the umpires are rewarded for being whistle happy.

I was truly dumbfounded by the free awarded to Rocca in the last.

There was actual fist contact to the screen last night on a few occasions from me...Scott McLaren...*deep breaths*.

I've never punched the screen before, but it was exhilarating. I highly recommend it as a way to channel your anger (just don't punch too hard)

it was bad both ways on a few occasions, but I've seen worse.

Wakelin basically took Mooney's head off in the first quarter and didn't give one away, Mooney slyly tapped it out from under Clement and got a deliberate call, Thomas laid a fair tackle on Gablett and it was deemed high, Nablett had his arms chopped all night and Rocca played with one arm all night again.

Good win, break the drought next week.

Lol Clement blatantly tapped it out and we finally got a deliberate call after you guys had handballed, ran and kicked it out of bounds deliberately on a constant basis. Our forwards were constantly held, pushed and scragged without getting a free even on occasions when a Collingwood had no eyes for the ball. While you guys got very soft frees on a constant basis which shouldn't happen in finals football. e.g. First and last free to Rocca, 50m against Selwood, lol too many to list

I admit you guys got some harsh call such as the non-decision when Milburn took Lockyer's head off, but they were few and far between the number we copped.

As a neutral party watching at home, I would say I thought the umpiring was some of the best I've seen this year.

The umpiring was consistant and pick up 99% of the frees, no major screw ups. The umps controlled the game well, allowing the players to play the game without imposing themselves.

It was clear they payed anything high and did all night.

The only fifty I remember was given against collingwood for backchat.

Now, tonight the umps will be crap and against us all the way, but I will be watching with one eye.

- it is the commentators and neutral supporters that show it to me. We got shafted.

- without them you would have been 5 goals down in the first quarter. Completely different game from there.

Give it a rest mate, you won be happy. All the above statements show is you have very little understanding of the rules or the game.

The umpires were neutral last night. I find people who whinge about umpires have generally played little footy themselves and so lack an understanding of the game.

They basically allowed collingwood to play rough, but penalised us if we tried to match it with them. That's just not fair

Selwood's 50? He had a legitimate spoil attempt
And Harley going back with the flight- how can you penalise that piece of courage?

They brought the game into disrepute - I heard blokes (neutral) swearing in the pub last night that they were about to give the game away if this is what it has come to

You can't tell me a packed MCG of pies supporters doesn't get into the umpires heads. It was probably worse than playing away in Sydney or Perth last night

I've never a game where umpires have been that inconsistent with the holding the man rule. There was one bit in the last quarter where Thomas was holding onto Bartel the whole way in the 20 meter chase for the ball in a critical point in the game (20 minutes or so in the last quarter I think).

Mooney was stiff, could have got a couple of free kicks for being held and almost having his head taken off in the 2nd. Then Selwood and Harley etc.

Collingwood were stiff on a couple of calls as well (though I think the umpiring favored them a bit but I'm probably bias) but the problem was that the umpires mistakes against us often resulted in goals.

Anyways let just be happy we won

I could not say whether the umpires were just s**t or our players were just getting beaten badly at the ground becasue it was so far to see properly. then got home and watched the replay untill 3a.m..
Umpiring was really really b***s***...
We should have had at least more than 5 freekicks agaist the Pies..
I really credit Pies pressure but still the game would have been better if umpiring was fair.. anyway!! Footy God knew and we won!!!

That was great footy - I love that that didn't get a free kick

Shocking umpiring as usual. Espacially against Collingwood...its always when a team verses collingwood that everything dosn't go your way. I could have pointed out heaps of free kicks that you guys should have been awarded but the silly umpire didnt give you. Thankgod you guys won in the end...deserved it and I hope you guys can win one more time.

The first half was very one sided to Collingwood, they gifted them 3 goals, most were there but they missed 4-5 free kicks to Geelong, the third term was pretty good and the last was even also.

The Selwood 50m really stuck out as one of the worst decisions of the year.

I thought that some early decisions favoured Collingwood.

The impressive thing however is how your team didn't let these so-so decisions affect them.

IMO, all premiership teams have the ability to win DESPITE receiving poor umpiring decisions and your team has shown that trait so far this year.

I wouldn't worry about the umpires if I was you guys, they are virtually a non factor. If they are poor you win, if they are good you win well.

I thought he was the best out of the three. The other two - McBurney and McInerney umpired Collingwood's two previous finals and gave them a dream run in both, something which continued again last night.

i can't believe peeps get so caught up in the umpiring argument - it's nature of sport the someone has to adjudicate, often in a split second.

Mate, we're happy we won, but it really shouldn't have been that close.

For mine there were four factors that stopped us blowing it wide open.

First and by far most important was Collingwood's pressure. Their tackling, spoiling, shepherding and general endeavour was absolutely fantastic. Have a look at Maxwell running Ablett down on the 50 early in the third, causing a missed shot at goal, for reasons why it was close.

Second, we were just a little off the boil. Partly caused by Collingwood pressure, sure, especially late in the game, but have a look at the first 5 minutes for Tom Harley missing two uncontested overhead marks, and then a target only 20 metres away by foot from a free kick. In none of those cases was he under any real pressure, and it was too early in the game for perceived pressure from Collingwood's play. Maybe it was big game nerves. Who knows, but whatever the reason, we weren't quite "on song".

Third was our kicking for goal. The ones that I remember clearly are Mooney and Stokes in the first and Ottens, Kelly and Stokes at the beginning of the third. All easy shots, and even two of the five go through and its a different game.

A long distant fourth was three very poor umpiring decisions that made a direct three-goal difference on the scoreboard - the fifty against Selwood, the last free kick to Rocca, and Mooney getting mugged in the goalsquare by Wakelin. I very, very rarely complain about umpires - you won't find too many posts from me on here ever doing that - but I challenge any "neutral observer" around here to play back to back the footage of the last free kick to Rocca, and Wakelin on Mooney in the second quarter. Compare them directly and see which should be a free kick. I just did, and I can tell you that Wakelin ran straight at Mooney and made enough contact to stop a mark, without EVER ONCE looking at or for the ball. Harely's eyes never left the ball, and his body made glancing contact with Rocca's shoulder as he jumped towards it. If Nick Holland thinks Collingwood got the raw end of that, he's either too dumb or too blind to be worth listening to.

Anyway, you're right, it had no effect on the result, but it just made it a little more exciting than it might otherwise have been. It doesn't matter now. To err is human especially when they're decisions made in the heat of the game with 60,000 mad feral Collingwood supporters yelling at you.

When i heard the list of umpires i though great we are going to get rolled with the free kicks. S McLaren (Monty Burns) is the worst, it seemed every time we would get a few goals in front, the umps said hey better give collingwood a free kick, from which a lot of them resulted in goals to collingwood. It was most frustrating, what made it even more frustrating is the fact that geelong were not playing there best footy. Hopefully they will lift there game next week.
