Anyone know if the MCG have the same problems? Going over for the Richmond game.
nope - didn't at the carlton game, and there were 45k there that night

but, i think for the bigger games they do have a few issues. talking the 80k crowds

I made a thread on it last year and NTRabbit is 100 percent correct.

Smart phones are constantly connected and even when they aren't in use are still sending and receiving small packets of data so given the amount of people who now have smart phones it puts a massive strain on the networks.

Back when the Iphone 3 lauched you could receive data without a problem at AAMI, but over the last 2-3 years as the uptrake of smart phones has dramatically increased it's gradually gotten worse to the point now where it's pretty much impossible to access data over 3g during the game.

4G will eventually be no different, as more and more people change to 4G those networks will become just as crowded as the 3G ones currently are.

I with Telstra. Have 4G. St. Kilda game is the first game ever my phone worked properly..
Fair to say i was shocked!!

I had no problems at the Prelim Final last year either - and that was on 3/Vodafone!

The MCG have since boosted capacity, so you should never have a problem there. Bear in mind that you've got Rod Laver, Hisense and AAMI Park in the precinct, so if all were in use and at capacity you'd be looking at about 150K patrons in that precinct (doubt all would ever be in use and at capacity at the same time though).

absolutely. smart phones are always connected to the 3g/4g network, much like when you're at home it's connected to your wi-fi. mobile towers work in a similar way

what i was trying to say in my earlier post was that because we're going to the city, the city is well equipped for many thousands of people to connect to their mobile towers. the infrastructure is already in place. this is due to adelaide being somewhere where it's not uncommon for say 100k to be there working, shopping, studying etc

at west lakes, the telcos won't upgrade the infrastructure for 3 hours a week of many thousands of customers trying to use their service. outside of the footy, they would maybe have 10k max shopping and living in houses etc. it doesn't make business sense for them to do this

I was there at the Carlton game, I'm with Telstra and it was TERRIBLE.

Couldn't get decent enough speed to follow DT stats - everything slowed to a complete stop.

It is just so frustrating.

Have a Optus 4G iPhone, and can only get it to work before the game, and very, very rarely during the game.

Game breaks are almost impossible.

Being a Twitter/SC/DT nerd, being without this stuff is extremely annoying. Even if you are the game, its nice to know just the stats of the game, and general comments from other fans.

Optus LTE (4G) doesn't reach out to West Lakes...yet. The only Optus LTE coverage in Adelaide currently is in the CBD. So for now you'd be on 3G out there like every other man and his dog, hence the congestion.

Optus LTE is expected to be rolled out in suburban Adelaide in June according to the Optus salesperson who sold me my iPhone last month. Hopefully this will mean a slightly better experience for the last few games at AAMI.

I've just given Optus the flick. With them, I couldn't get 3G to work at AAMI (during Crows games) or in the CBD most of the time. I couldn't get any coverage whatsoever in Payneham either. However it worked fine in Sydney and Melbourne (I was posting images on Facebook while at an MCG game with 65k) so I put it down to Optus being oversubscribed as hell in Adelaide.

I've never had a problem with Optus here in Adelaide. CBD in particular is great with LTE.

From the latest coverage maps, Telstra 4g doesn't cover West Lakes.. Reaches from the CBD out to around Lockleys..

Optus barely reaches West Terrace in the city and only out to Medindie and North Adelaide..

Yes Adelaide Oval will be in 4g zones but by then the network will probably be overloaded anyway :p

Adelaide Oval is supposedly going to have a wi-fi set up which is great..

I posted in an older thread about data issues, the link is broken now but this is what was in the story I had linked to:

The SANFL, Power and Crows have recognised in their planning for the new Adelaide Oval in 2014 that many football fans must be won back from a comfortable at-home routine with live telecasts - and the internet.
This worldwide trend has challenged the US-based NFL which is demanding all 31 NFL venues offer wi-fi technology to boost crowds.

This is to match the at-home experience of watching football from the couch in front of a high-definition television and laptop offering vision from multiple games, updates on fantasy football scores and perhaps even daily tasks on the internet.

``Part of this spectator experience will be the ability to have access to live information, be it statistics, replays or information on services available within the stadium transmitted to individual mobile phones.

``The stadium has the infrastructure to allow connection via wi-fi.

``Together with some of the largest video replay screens and a high quality public address sound system, these technologies will create a memorable spectator experience.''

Social networking on wi-fi also will be part of the Oval experience.

Whats the deal here? Its just getting worse. Seems to be the case since 4G started.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm with Telstra too.

Also while I'm at it what is that septic smell near gate 4a?

Its the only gate they use for power games ,a bit like a cattle truck stinks after use.;)

I have an iPhone 5 on Telstra... No problems even during breaks. Got a new phone and switched to Telstra in the off season, but can't remember whether I have had any data issues this year. Was certainly a problem last year.

I agree. I have the same phone. I used to have trouble, no reception with my Iphone 4 - but I have had no issues this year and can get on whenever - before, during and after with no problems at all.

iPhone 5 with Telstra, been to every home game bar Hawthorn and that's including pre-season and the Port game. I have had no troubles at all - it did catch me by surprise and although it is good, I am now the go-to guy when friends want to know the stats/scores from other games :(
