And a day after losing midfielder Brock McLean, Melbourne yesterday moved swiftly to tie up its best player, Aaron Davey.
The Demons ended a dispute over the length of an initial contract offer to Davey, who was coming out of contract next month, by agreeing to a new three-year deal. Melbourne had previously offered Davey a two-year contract, which was unacceptable to the player.
Davey, 26, is the favourite to win Melbourne's best and fairest award for the first time after he was the Demons' most prolific Brownlow Medal vote-getter with six from his club's total of 31. He polled in three games.
McLean will join Carlton during next month's trade week after the Blues agreed to exchange their first-round national draft pick, overall selection No11 to the Demons for the out-of-contract midfielder.
The disgruntled McLean's desire to leave Melbourne was revealed in The Australian this month.
The Demons appear set to enter the November national draft with four selections inside the first 20.
Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab said yesterday his club was "probably" going to retain selections one, two, 11 and 18, for the last uncompromised draft for several years due to the generous concessions awarded to the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney for their AFL start-ups.
"We want to load up in the last draft, unless something out of the box presents itself," Schwab said.
Despite Shaun Burgoyne this week choosing Hawthorn as his preferred new club, Melbourne has not completely given up on the Port Adelaide midfielder.
"Until a deal is done, we'll maintain an interest," Schwab said. "We'll hang in there."
