Was watching the last quarter of the 93 Prelim final the other day.

David Brown did two absolutely terrible things which went a long way to us losing the game

Everyone talks of A Jarman's missed set shot in the third quarter but in hte last Brown was running into an open goal from about 25 metres on teh correct side for a left footer and missed.

He was then ran down by Wanganeen just before Watson kicked the last goal of the game in cricumstances where he should have kicked it

Mind you the umpiring in the last quarter was also very dogdy indeed

Plus the skill level shown by Liptak and Maynard amongst others was disgraceful when the pressure was on.

Smart was fantastic in the last quarter and Tregenza and Mc Dermott tried hard.

We could sooooo easily have won that game even after Essendon got in front.

All I remember from that game is being over the moon at half time and being in tears at the end.

I also remember Cornesy bemoaning the second-half freekick count which was - if he is correct - 18 to 2 in favour of gee I wonder.

Was about to say the same thing BC....a Port fan could write a thesis on the subject.....

Jars, can't believe you were able to sit through and watch that last quarter. You must have a high threshold for pain, the Germans would have got no information out of you :p

As for the game, all 22 players have to take the blame, I for one never held A. Jarman particularly accountable, he made one mistake, I'm sure there were plenty others made (as you have pointed out Jars).

In the end, everything that happened in 97 and 98 made up for it, and 93 was probably a big spur for the players. Everything happens for a reason after all.

Even the two emergencies? That's a bit harsh. :p

Ha.....picked me up on a technicality, only 3 on the bench back then, eh? Well they can all take the blame for making a little boy like me cry :(

2 man interchange in fact; 3 man interchange came in in 1994; 4 man interchange came in in 1998.

So we had 20 failures in 1993, 21 premiership players in 1997 and 22 premiership players in 1998.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Seems so long ago that we had 2 man interchange benches, when in fact it was only 10 years ago. And if Sheeds (?) had his way we'd have 6 to 8 players sitting on the pine

Hey...You created the definition of the word Choke!!

We just follow in your footsteps - just like we'll win the flag the next two years :D ;)

Unfortunately nowadays we don't get the a double chance to walk straight into a Granny from 5th place, If anyone was to blame for that loss it was the coach going defensive in the second half, Hodges, Smart and Modra were too strong and dominant for the young Essendon forwrd line and for some reason to this day I still can't work out why Smart was taking from CHF, Hodges was dragged and Modra was left the task of finishing Essendon off and all it done was let Essendon back in the game. Hodges was just starting to earn his money that year, kicked 6 goals in the first quarter against Glenelg the week before and that day looked like he was going to turn it on with Modra.
If any time the players were to blame it was the week before when they kicked woefully against Carlton, can't remember how many more behinds they kicked but the Crows should of shoed in the flag that finals series. I myself was disappointed at the time but nowadays that is one finals series I won't have to hear you guys squawk about. :D

The killer for us in that 2nd Semi was that third quarter:

Adelaide 2.4 2.9 5.16 8.20 (68)
Carlton 1.3 4.7 8.7 13.8 (86)

3.7 to 4.0. Urgh.

The fact we rolled them by 66 points in the first round of the following season was zero consolation.

6.11 to 9.1 after half time

However we never looked like winning that game IMO as we were off the boil and most of our points were rushed rather than missed opportunities.

I will take the 14 -0 (or was it 14-1) in the second half of the 97 grand final as compensation.
