AFL wouldn't let Essendon sit in judgment of Hird because of Evans' conflict of interest (they're close friends).

Evans had to go or Hird was to be charged with bringing the game into disrepute and possibly suspended by the AFL.

Hird will now escape individual sanction by the AFL.

Whateley reporting that Evans had a bit of a health incident that has tipped him into making this decision.

Not serious, he reports, but maybe a timely reminder to us all that this has real effects on people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's 'karma' or deserved, but there have been reports that Dean Robinson has also suffered health issues and according to team Robinson, is the victim of a smear campaign. The person best placed to take the fall is Robinson, Essendon can't afford to let what the media believes to be truth be the truth. Media can't really afford to not report what they believe to be the truth because a person is suffering from stress and stress related illnesses.

All the best to Evans, from reports I believe the correct decision has been made, but I can't see why people can't wish him well in his business and personal life. Hopefully his health improves, it's an unfortunate consequence of this saga.

Any stress was entirely caused by the actions of those at Essendon Football Club. Without those actions there wouldn't have been any news at all.

Remember the ziggy report everyone was frothing about? this is the byproduct, bottom line is the chain of command was up the whazoo, there were other 'governance issues', and checks and balances clearly weren't done. That's not on Hird, that's on guys like Robson, Evans and even Corcoran and Hamilton.

I think he's a fantastic operator and any club in the league would be lucky to have him, that much should be blatantly obvious looking at how far we've come under him, but sometimes you just gotta pull the pin, even though you might not want to.

No doubt...I guess I just take the view that all of that good stuff he has done, that's his job, and it doesn't ameliorate the biggest boo-boo in your long history. And if the result is the absolute worst - from an Essendon point of view - the memberships and sponsorships could well take a pretty big hit, undoing his work.

John Elliott is Carlton through and through, and did a many great things whilst at the helm, but he can go forth and fornicate with a horse for all I care...inexcusable what he did to my club (no need to point out the differences in the circumstances, I'm well aware). Intentional cheating or grossly negligent governance...the buck needs to stop somewhere and all the memberships and training facilities in the world doesn't change that fact.

I don't think health is the key reason he has just resigned because it has been a factor the whole time this has been an issue and he hasn't resigned because of it. Can't use it now unless it has become a major issue which I haven't heard it has.
