Universal Love David Mackay Appreciation Thread

I've been watching a lot of replays of the last couple of seasons and I've gotta say Dmac is a very skilled player, when he gets it he rarely burns the ball and some of what he does is really nice. What is frustrating about DMac is I really want to see him more but it just doesn't happen enough. I'll watch a 1/4 and a bit thinking he's not in the team then he pops up for 2-3 touches of class then nothing. Teams just can't afford to carry blokes that long if they are going to win against good sides.

Well, call me crazy, but after a 30 possession best on performance in an MCG semi final, I kinda thought the same.
Basically been a bloody big tease...

DMac needs to learn how to draw a free when on the inside... and try and win the contest that way...

At his age? Firstly he needs to get the ball in the contest and then he'd need to not hurl it away before the tackler touches him. He doesn't take tackles, so there's no dropping at the knees option for him. If we're wondering how to improve Mackay's stoppage game, we might as well start working on 2017. Seriously, this is crazy shit.

Hey guys, wil Mackay be consistent best 22 this year? Thinking about picking him in Ultimate Foory as a back up Mid / Defence

Isnt he rated by crows fans?
He isnt rated by this board me being one of them. Undelievers majority of the time. Go back and watch his final vs hawks last year it shouldve been his last for the club. The fact he still has 3 seasons remaining on his contract is laughable. Wish we traded him to mfc a couple years ago when apparently you were into him..

Put it this way, your experience of him last year is a fair way from the norm. He's favoured by Campo and Noble, so will likely get first crack. If he keeps his spot he would be going well because I don't think he will have the patience shown in him that he did last year.

Hey guys, will MacKay pick up 22 useful possessions this year? Thinking about picking him in Ultimate Footy as a back up Mid / Defence because I'm hoping to come dead stone motherless last

FTFY

The thing with Mackay is that if he pushes himself physically to get to enough contests at pace and no opposition steps in front of him, then he can actually provide a fair bit of drive for us. His primary deficiency is that he isn't particularly good at working outside of 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock. He's also incapable of holding possession in a tackle and delaying the give, so he either loses possession or gets rid of it haphazardly prior.

I don't think the inside/stoppage or half forward experiment will last long. I think he can be an adequate half forward, but that puts him behind a fair few at our club. As an inside player I expect he'll put his body in but he'll be an abject failure due to inability to work 360 degrees and stand up in tackles.

He's a pure wingman that needs to work harder. If that role ceases to exist, then so should his opportunity to be selected.
I reckon he has worked his arse off this preseason. Definitely been given a word about his longevity in the game.

No saying he should be selected but improved effort in the NAB games compared to last year.

No doubt he's worked harder in our 2 NAB games thus far. We've also seen him play ahead of the ball, so he's possibly in line to cover an injured CC or Knight. Whether he can keep his work rate at the required level for long enough is my major query. With a fully fit squad for round 1 I reckon he would just miss out. But with doubts over a couple of forwards, I reckon he probably gets a guernsey.

I reckon he will start but his position has to come under threat this year. Maybe that might spur him on, maybe it won't. He is the type of player that if he averaged 20 possies a week then you'd keep him as when he does have it, his disposal is above average. Issue is that he will average about 13-14 possies a week which is a poor effort for a guy in the middle.

I just get the idea this is the year he gets over taken by others, so he may not be the best choice for your team but I guess injuries may keep him in the team

Anyone else think the next 2 games (Syd & Haw) are crossroads games for DMac?

the spot light is on...
2 wins would see his position in the side stay on/under the radar...anything else and the heat comes on...
it's time to rock and roll young man...

career defining fortnight for Dmac I reckon...good luck, go get 'em...

I don't dislike Mackay and think he's actually been better this year.

But when you have Cameron, menzel and soon Hampton out of the side, who could all fill the same role and are more dangerous and better defenders, I am disappointed with his continual selection.

Hell, even Henderson would be better on a wing.

In saying that, his one two play on the weekend is exactly what we should be seeing from him all the time, but we all know this happens maybe once a game. So if I'm the opposition I know he's a player I don't really have to pay much attention to.

We need to be dangerous across all lines of a football team and we're simply more dangerous and better defensively with other people in that role.

It's pretty obvious to see, so not really sure of his continual selection. My only guess is that Cameron, Menzel and Henderson werent quite there yet with their conditioning.

Next few weeks will be very interesting.

Currently leading our club for inside 50s and is 6th in the AFL for total inside 50s.

I believe we have the highest efficiency for turning inside 50s into scores as well.

in the stats thread by Miss Vanessa, only 13% of his entries are getting turned into goals... equates to roughly 1 a game...
