Definitely a two way street. Hard to imagine Australia’s batting is going to look nearly as formidable as it has for a decade for touring teams when they rock up: ‘what are we going to do when we look up and Warner is on 30 off 35 balls before we’ve even settled?’ But you’d have to think sooner or later they will find someone that’s going to give them a more stable option on the road that they don’t have to account for

Many things can be true at once.

Langer was probably a great teammate.

He was not a great coach, or at least a coach with a use-by-date.

The qualities which made him a great teammate limited him as a coach.

Cricketers hold grudges, grind axes etc, so his former teammates stuck up for him.

Some of his former teammates are a bit dull.

He was a very successful coach at WA and took Australia from the pits to the T20 World Cup. You are correct, two things can be true at once, he can be a good coach and a complete bellend. You may also be correct that his style may have a use-by date, though he still seems highly regarded at WA by players and officials and would probably be welcomed back.

He certainly instilled some discipline and humility in the Australian team. But where do you go from there? More discipline and humility?

The WA team he took over was not lacking talent. They lacked discipline and so Langer’s methods worked. They also weren’t under a national microscope and so Langer’s eccentricities weren’t such a problem.

Keep in mind that half his stint as Australian coach was during Covid. The players had a good look at him.

His time at WA IMO also shows he is not a technically good coach.

Langer coached each of Bancroft and Harris at WA and Australia. Both of them have deep technical flaws that have not been addressed (or in the alternative both are beyond help).

Renshaw made a big ton overseas didn't he, in India I think? FWIW I think he's the long term answer for us as an opener, I would have dropped Warner before the Ashes and played Renshaw.

Shield wise Harris and Bancroft have about 15 hundreds in the span Renshaw has 5..

Overall Renshaw probably is the least proven of the 3.

He has the best Test average of the three (though it's still under 30 of course). I mean no one is beating down the door which is the problem, Pucovski is not really an option currently otherwise he'd be the one.

The problem is they really need to get two openers, Khawaja won't be around forever. so they probably need to blood an actual opener. I think Green could do well opening and this might be a short term option, I don't really like giving an allrounder the responsibility of opening as well though.

Consider:

Burns - 37, 4x100, 23 tests
Bancroft - 26, 0x100, 10 tests
Harris - 25, 0x100, 14 tests
Renshaw - 29, 1x100, 14 tests

So Burns has them all covered.

Could we look past his age (34 atm) to have him open until the end of next summer?

We should also consider we might replace Khawaja very soon, as long as he is making noises about motivation.

We know what we'll get with Burns - he'll destroy poor bowling on flat decks but he struggles against quality bowling on challenging decks.

He scores at a reasonable clip though.

Good I'm not the only one who's thought about him. Age seems to have him on the scrap heap but he's a better option than the other three for opening imo.

There’s certainly no white knight on the horizon, we just have to work with what we have. I’ve said before, on age and potential, Renshaw is probably most likely to succeed. However, he and Harris have failed more recently, Bancroft has averaged over 50 in the past two Shield seasons, you really have to reward good form.

The Burns option is not the worst but I don’t think he’ll offer much more than Bancroft, who I can see beating up on the Windies and doing well at home, while struggling against top opposition.

Ultimately who we bring in for the Windies series, needs to be picked with the plan that he'll be the senior opener in 12 months time. He gets a year to bat and settle in with Uzzie, before he likely retires after the Indian series next year.
That could bring Burns into the calculations, but I think McDonald said last week it's between Green, Harris, Bancroft and Renshaw.
