If he continues in the same form he cannot be picked - he'll be lucky to stay in the NSW team the way he is going. The day Australian sides are picked based on marketing appeal is the day I pull stumps.

Channel 9 were trying to get some say in one day team selection only recently weren't they??

In my view it has already happened. Warner got his Test debut partly on marketing appeal, both Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson have received similar favourtism based on the same.

I love a conspiracy theory, but I don't buy that one at all.

Brett Lee was actually good though

David Warner = Possibly the biggest waste of cricket talent this country has ever seen

Can you imagine the tears from Michael Slater if Warner doesn't play at the GABBA which 100% should be the case?
It will be delicious.

An alternative view - David Warner possibly the luckiest batsman ever to play Test Cricket for Australia

Warner missed out on possibly being a huge factor in a series OVERSEAS that NO ONE, I repeat NO ONE expected us to win. What did he do instead........punched a pommy and never played apart.

he did play.

Can also only blame himself.

Brett Lee was actually good though

He was good, but he wasn't so good that he deserved the free pass he got. In 2001, 02 and 03 he averaged 36, 41 and 35 before finally getting dropped. In only 3 of his 10 calendar years playing test cricket did he average under 30 and one of those years he only played 1 test. In one other year (2004) he played only 1 test, so effectively 2 out of his 8 full calendar years he averaged under 30.

That's a good run with selectors in anyone's book when you consider guys like Kasprowicz, Bichel, Clark, Bollinger, Magoffin, Bracken, Dale, Inness, Williams, Tait, Rofe, Dawes (and maybe others I can't remember) where all given limited or no opportunities.

Not saying they'd all be up to test match standard, but Lee gets 70 tests of average (maybe slightly above average) performances, whilst those 12 guys got about 80-90 tests between them.

Maybe Lee was the third best bowler of that generation but it really irked me that we never really looked outside because I'm sure we could've found another fourth option, which would have made us one of the very rare test teams to have four bowlers averaging under 30.

For most of his career, but not all of it. He seemed to get a few games on the back of weet-bix promotions. Or maybe my old age and cynicism is playing up.
When Australian Cricket was at it's zenith, the bowling attack was McGrath, Gillespie, Warne and one of either Kasprowicz or Bichel. Brett Lee had a 13 month stint as permanent 12 Man from memory.

100%? He's got plenty of time to pull his finger out between now and then. Agree that at the moment, on form and preparation, you can't select him, but if he starts making runs again, especially for tour matches/Australia A, and stays out of trouble, then you can and do.

Has the novelty of Warner worn off? It seems there are countless batsmen that can do it as he can now. Don't see how he adds value to any of the three teams at the moment.
