after seeing the Trials Games, i will attempt to guess at 30 players from each region being picked?

Vic Metro - (if fit - Rye Penny, Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, Will Ashcroft) Cam McKenzie, Charlie Clarke, Nick Watson, Matthew Jefferson, Paul Pascu, Riley Witherill, Lewis Hayes, Luke Teal, Nathan Philactides, Oli Hotton, Nate Caddy, Callum Verrell, Yuyu Ashwin, Cam Kizan, Blake Drury, Iliro Smit, Josh Weddle, Al Davey, Kai Windsor, Oliver Badr, Ben Hempel, Logan Morris, Dane Harvey, Hudson O'Keefe, 19 year olds Jaelen Pavlidis and Sam Grant (maybe Jerome Lawrence?) plus a few others to fill out positional needs

Vic Country - (if fit - Mitch Szybkowski, Brayden George, Aaron Cadman, Jhye Clark, Oliver Hollands, Olivier Northam, Henry Hustwaite, Harley Reid and James Van Es) Jack O'Sullivan, Archer Reid, Caleb Mitchell, Toby McMullin, Sam Frangalas, Luamon Lual, Oscar Murdoch, Max Clohesy, Felix Fogarty, Will Parkhouse, Ted Clohesy, Zane Duursma, Jacob Konstanty, Jonti Schuback, Eli Pearce, Jaxon Binns, Cooper Simpson, Harvey Howe, Nick Collier, Hugh Bond, Taj Campbell-Farrell(although i think he will play on a flank instead of mid)(maybe Hugo Nosiara) plus a few others to fill out positional needs

for me some big movers in my rankings are:

Cam McKenzie - he was one of the best in the first trial next to Charlie Clarke who i had already liked a lot, Cam was a defender last year and his move into the midfield has improved his draft stocks dramatically

Oli Hotton and Cam Kizan - both players are similar in that they are speedy wingers who got involved in the play for their various vic metro teams, both wearing the #7

Caleb Mitchell - was one of the best for Vic Country in the first game, played mid and forward and was a key player in their team, i think he could be a 2nd round prospect or late 1st if he performs like he did in Werribee

Toby McMullin - other than Pete taking him in the Bigfooty Phantom i didnt know much about him, but he is a strong tackling clever forward who showed a lot of ability, he was impressive also for Country

Jacob Konstanty - he is a small forward who can pop up during state games last year and this year with a handful of goals, he is a forward who is a finisher, not a pressure forward, he probably could be picked up mid/late draft, all depending on how his champs go

Callum Verrell - competitive defender

a few players for next year really improved their rankings as well. (A.Reid, Lual, Frangalas, Philactides, Nyko, Witherill, Watson, Badr, Caddy, Duursma, Simpson, Morris)

in conclusion i think McKenzie is probably a top 25 player, Caleb Mitchell would slot in around 20-35 i would like to see more, but he has good traits, Toby McMullin could be mid draft option, maybe better depending on how he deals with the pressures of the champs, Konstanty i also think is a mid draft option, Kizan and Hotton have traits that could see them drafted also (speed on the outside and penetration in their kicking)

Callum Verrell. Will keep rising. Personally have watched him 3 times live and has impressed me every time. Tough & courageous along with great footy smarts.

Thoughts on SuperCoach scores.

just some take aways

Caleb Mitchell was huge in the last half for Country, tallish mid/forw, but his team was beaten by then, he just looked like a competitor and impressed me a lot

Archer Reid(KPF) and Luamon Lual(med def) look like top prospects for next year, Frangalas(mid/forw) also looks classy and strong, Philactides (small def) a match winner in defence

Dozzi and Tomasiello got a heap of the ball, but werent as clean or sharp with disposal/decision making, Drury always pops up in state games, but i thought he was a bit pedestrian, Yu had a good 1st half but seemed to run out of steam, i believe he kicked 2 goals in the first half, 1 running into 30m after being given a handball and the other i think a mark and kick off the top of my head, Philactides was the hero for metro in the last quarter, country had the scoring end in the last and were peppering the forward 50 but Philactides was involved in nearly every intercept, tackle or rebound 50

Verrell is really impressive, he, Caleb Mitchell and Toby McMullin really impressed me for this years draft, which is why i added them to my list prior to the champs where i hope they have great champs

Al Davey Jnr had a good run in the midfield, Hotton and Kizan played roles for metro on the outside, i didnt realise Bennetts had such a good game, Caddy had a big first half clunking a bunch of marks, but most of his kicks on goal came at the windy non scoring end so i dont think he kicked a goal, but his general play was very good as always

Konstanty came alive in the last half to give country a chance at a win, he is a good goal sneak when on and has been a performer for the state team, Duursma was a classy player, running around with his gold boots getting plenty of the ball in mid before going forward and kicking a few goals i think? and giving country another avenue to goal, Ted Clohesy was a beast in the middle in the first half and was really impressive winning the hard ball and feeding team mates as well as getting free and going for a run, i was a bit disappointed in Taj Campbell-Farrell he was a bit one pace and doing handballs over his head instead of hitting up team mates on the outside or winning the hard ball, he even gave away a free for incorrect disposal with a handball over his head, it was just a weird tactic to employ?

2023 is looking like a very strong draft.

from Victoria alone theres a good group forming

Archer Reid - kpf
Nick Watson - sml forw
Nate Caddy - med forw, maybe grow to kpf?
Nathan Philactides - sml def
Harley Reid - mid/forw
Luamon Lual - med def
George Stevens - med forw
Zane Duursma - mid/forw
Sam Frangalas - mid/forw
Cooper Simpson - mid/forw
Mahmoud Taha - mid
Oliver Badr - def/mid
Archie Roberts - mid
Riley Witherill - med forw

Fair assessment. During the trial games I thought the 2023 players performed better than this years draft crop. I’ve been saying for a longtime the 2023 group will be a very strong draft…

Disagree. Though some 2005 players performed very well. Doesn’t mean they all go on to improve. Also about 12 of this years best didn’t play between the metro & country squads.

but thats because George Wardlaw, Will Ashcroft, Elijah Tsatas, Harry Sheezel, Rye Penny, Mitch Szybkowski, Brayden George, Aaron Cadman, Jhye Clark, Oliver Hollands, Olivier Northam, Henry Hustwaite and James Van Es didnt play from this years draft group because they were probably already guaranteed a spot in the metro and country teams.

if i were to say who the best 10 players were on the day it would probably be something like

Cam McKenzie, Charlie Clarke, Archer Reid, Matthew Jefferson, Luamon Lual, Nick Watson, Callum Verrell, Jacob Konstanty, Zane Duursma, Ted Clohesy (4/10 for 2023 with 12 of the best players from metro and country not playing)

special mentions to Caleb Mitchell(great 2nd half), Nathan Philactides, Jack O'Sullivan, Jonti Schuback and Toby McMullin ect

i do think next years crop will be good, but this years crop looked great last year too.

I agree 100% with Davo-27
PocketRocket08 of course there will be some that will drop off and some new names will rise, however, at the moment the 2023 group that has had exposure is strong at this point in time. over the years many players get injured in their bottom year and still get drafted and this is because they have AFL traits. What I see from this 2023 group is they all have some nice attributes that can transfer into AFL footy. Time will tell I guess…

Davo did you do a write up of that sa U18s game vs the sa u20s? Anyone you liked from that?
most of the players i liked were the usuals from this years draft and next years

Adam D'Aloia - (mid)played well again, gets the tough ball and feeds team mates, tackles hard, just does a lot right and little wrong, contested inside mid

Will Dowling - (wing/mid)tall rangy player nice kick, good runner, has good AFL traits, but doesnt get enough footy to have too high (against good opponents)

Isaac Keeler - (Ruck/leading KPF)really impressive game again, 2 games and he has out performed Scully and Lemmey, the fact he can play ruck and his around the ground game is much more advanced than those 2 gives him an edge, also he reminds me so much of a young Paddy Ryder it isnt funny

Kobe Ryan - (wing/mid)i like how he goes about it, reminds me in style and movement of a Darcy Parish, good and bad i guess(although he does work hard when he doesnt have the ball), he is a talent

Harry Barnett - (Ruck)very athletic ruck, who can go forward as a kpf, his around the ground work is good and is surprisingly agile/quick for a big man, ground balls seem to not be a problem for him which is a good thing, but has lost the ruck dual too often in the last 2 years for me to rate too highly.

Mattaes Phillipou - (mid/forw)bit of a disappointing game from him, got a couple of cheapies out the back with his running capabilities but other than that didnt have a great game imo, got caught htb a couple of times, i did like him flying the flag at 1 point after a team mate got tackled too hard.

Hansen(bp/mid), Lovelock(hff), J.Ryan(hbf), Bennier(FB), Michaelanny(CHB/ med def), Lemmey(KPF) all had solid games as well

2023 Talent...

Jack Delean
- (medium forw) had a good game as that medium forward/mid, handed a goal off to Pedler and generally used the ball well, took a couple of good marks

Alex Holt - (hbf) had a great game off of half back, won nearly every ball that came towards him, another good player for next years draft

overall a better performance than the loss to NSW/ACT with Delean, Michaelanny, J.Ryan and Lemmey in the side, although Scully didnt play, they seem to be getting near their best team leading into the champs.

Kobe Ryan
- (wing/mid)i like how he goes about it, reminds me in style and movement of a Darcy Parish, good and bad i guess(although he does work hard when he doesnt have the ball), he is a talent

Alex Holt - (hbf) had a great game off of half back, won nearly every ball that came towards him, another good player for next years draft

overall a better performance than the loss to NSW/ACT with Delean, Michaelanny, J.Ryan and Lemmey in the side, although Scully didnt play

He is the one intriguing me at the moment. For all the knocks on his effort and application, the five minutes I watched he buttered up with three of four sprint efforts and a tackle. Looked very clean below his knees also!

Thanks for posting your thoughts.

Thanks for the report mate! though must say Dowling is not shy of finding the footy, he's probably the best ballwinner in the state for his age if played on the ball (harder I know when you have bulls like D'Aloia in there).

from my PoV the best were

Mattaes Phillipou - SA - clean hands in tight, good kicking action, kicked 2 goals and had plenty of it
Angus Anderson - Allies - another who was clean in tight, was very composed, good skills compared to most in the Allies team
Billy Dowling - SA - got a few clearances, also good direct fast handballs, clean disposal
Isaac Keeler - SA - the best tall on the ground, kicked 3 goals and competed well in the ruck, also brought the ball to ground inside 50 beautifully

then there were a few to play good footy

SA:
Max Michaelanny - created rebound, smart medium defender
Archie Lovelock - played well in part midfield and then up forward kicking a couple of goals
Jake Walker - i think he was negating his opponent in the 1st half then started winning it himself in the 2nd half, kicked a goal
Jack Delean - took a few good marks and linked up play, kicked a goal too
Jaiden Magor - started the game well kicking 2 goals in the 1st half then faded out of the game a bit
Adam D'Aloia - started off on a flank where he barely got involved in the play in the 1st half, but worked his way into it a little more in the 2nd half to just get a mention

Allies:
Colby McKercher - good running player with some good speed also fought out a few contests, very impressive game
Caiden Cleary - was pretty competitive off half back and a wing early, didnt see much of him in the last quarter
Jason Gilbee - got a heap of poss off of half back, a bit wayward with disposal, but also hit some lovely kicks to get the allies going
Jed Walter - big KPF for 2023, threw his weight around, kicked 2 goals and provided a focal point for the Allies going forward
Seth Campbell - kicked a couple of goals and was 1 of a few Allies that had good skills
Lachlan Cowan - knows how to get the ball, but his ball use was a bit all over the place early
Harry Rowston - in the midfield he was looking to handball to Lawrence all the time, which didnt work well for the Allies, then went forward and kicked 3 goals with the wind
Tom McCallum - another player that was really clean in his marking attempts/spoils and general disposal

players who disappointed:

Anthony Munkara - didnt look like he wanted to be there, tried a little in the 2nd half, but wasnt interested
Harry Lemmey - all game was involved in about half a dozen contests, kicked a goal, not much else to highlight

also wanted to point out that i think Nick Madden missed the most 2-5m handballs in the history of the game in this game, im joking but im not sure if im right, which is the funniest part.

Thanks Davo. Keeler a chance for the hawks if he keeps up current form? That’s a few decent games in a row. Or are some of the mids going to be too hard to pass up?
