I have liked Keeler for a couple of years now, but jumped off his stocks late last yr or early this yr, but i like what i see and im back on board, atm he is clearly the best tall in the draft putting the other SA kpfs to shame, he played mostly up the ground and part time ruck and still kicked 3 and provided ball drop front and centre a few times for the sml forwards

The only challenger could be Cadman/Northam from VC or Archer Reid from VC for 2023, Walter did well for the Allies another 2023 guy, Jefferson might lift, but probably not.

Lets watch the rest of the champs and see how they perform under pressure

i think the question that has been raised from the SA V Allies game and the SA Trials games is "are Keeler and Phillipou top 10 worthy?" and at this stage i think they are, Keeler and Phillipou have put together at least 2/3 quality performances if not 3/3 and are playing in a style that points to them being top 10 talents, but of course theres a few more games in the champs to go and patience is a virtue.

another question that is being asked is "are Scully, Lemmey and D'Aloia first round contenders?" this 1 im a little unsure of, i think Lemmey has the potential as a big forward to still go first round somewhere, but his performances are not doing him any favours, Scully also has some raw talent, less so than Lemmey but still has the height and u18's numbers to attract attention in the 1st round somewhere, but he seems to not like physical pressure and a lot of his contested marks in u18 footy dont seem to be a tough wrestle or tough spoil to contend with, D'Aloia is a bit one paced, he has a bit of ability to run and seems to have a quick mind which might help him at the next level, he also has a great resume of performance, but that lack of athleticism might mean he drops to late 1st maybe 2nd round even with his outstanding performances in the last 24 months, he is being replaced with Phillipou, Dowling and a combination of Lovelock and Walker in the centre, with Kobe Ryan to come back in he might have to play flanker the whole tournament and that might mean he drops to 2nd round in draft calculations?

Scully would have to be one of the most divisive players in the pool, some would argue he's a top 10 prospect and others are saying he's a mid to late second rounder, even Keeler seems to be more agreed upon atm.

The question when it comes to Harry Lemmey is; what’s more beneficial for a junior? Playing a role in a league side or dominating the U18s?

I personally think he could go scoreless the rest of the season and still go in the first round. Only thing that changes is teams who didn’t think they were a chance would now be licking their lips.

But if 18 year olds start being marked down for quiet performances against men (not that I think clubs would) then their management need to say no and get them kicking 5 against lesser opposition instead. It also raises the question on the importance of form heading into the Champs, and whether it’s right to assume these kids will transition immediately from playing men to dominating their peers.

Lemmey has struggled since his bout of Covid...recruiters will no doubt factor that in, Covid has differing impacts on different people. He showed easily enough last year at SANFL League level to go 1st round IMO.

Allies V Vic Metro 90-106? 16 point win

terrible broadcast from Blacktown, not only was the vision horrible at times and there were constant buffering throughout the game every 5 minutes or so, but the misnaming of players was adding to the difficulty of knowing what was going on and who did what.

from what i did see, the Allies kicked 4-5 goals straight before Vic Metro clicked into gear, the lack of vic metro games as a squad meant they seemed a bit off in the 1st quarter and the Allies who had played their first game last week took advantage of that to get a small lead, as the game went on it was clear there was a few players who stepped up to the pressure and challenge and imo they were

Will Ashcroft - was industrious and had a heap of disposal, went in and under and fed players as well as having some disposal on the run, had a great all round game and a goal wouldve rounded out a great game

Cam McKenzie - being called Hempel or Ashcroft for half the game i can forgive you if you didnt realise he had had such a great game lol, followed up Ashcroft most of the game and they were a great partnership in the middle

Blake Drury - he always seems to play better in the state games than he does for Oakleigh, i think he just lifts for the occasion

Callum Verrell - intercepting everything, running out of defence, takes on the opposition forwards, was one of the best for VM especially in the 1st half

Harry Sheezel - had a huge 3rd quarter and ended the game with 4 goals, kicked a goal over his head for a the highlight of the game, played a little in midfield as well

others to do well for VM - Hotton, Clarke, Hayes

Thomas McCallum - was the allies version of Verrell, was great with his intercepting and run out of defence

Nick Madden - had a much better game than last week, really battled hard in the centre and around the ground

others to do well - Brain, Cleary, Sanders, Rowston, Gillbee, Lawrence, Johnston, Anderson, Walter

good win by Vic Country in SA

Harley Reid the hero in defence taking a number of marks especially in the final quarter to guarantee the win for VC, some woeful i50 entries from VC all game, but if they can kick to a team mate instead of to areas they will do much better, Coby Burgiel added some great run and hit some key targets in the 2nd half, Cadman and Keeler were great all day, Barnett dominated the packs around the ground especially in the back half where he picked off a lot of i50's, D'Aloia was huge in the contested inside footy and gave SA a lot of opportunities from packs, Phillipou had a good mark and hit some nice handballs, but his inflence was down a bit on his last game, Delean couldve been a match winner but couldnt handle the pressure, Lovelock is a really good runner for SA, Walker is a tough inside mid that tries hard every game, Clark is a star mid, he just provides so much line breaking and tough ball winning to a side, Van Es and Hustwaite played good roles as key defenders, Northam was a strong presence as a roving ruck, Szybkowski did a lot of the tough inside stuff feeding runners and tackling ect.

once again Lemmey didnt do much at all, late in the game when SA were down a bit someone in the crowd, an SA local most likely said "f you Lemmey" showing how disappointing he was and the expectations that he would do something was not forthcoming once again

Not a great thing to say to an u18 kid. Most of these boys actually all of them are not the finished product. They all develop at different rates. So some might not have the consistency of others. Don’t think it’s right being that critical. If they aren’t good enough to be drafted so be it but I’m dead against swearing and insulting young men playing a game.

it was caught on the crowd mic late in the last quarter, i think some supporters/family/friends of players that are trying to get drafted get upset when their team is losing and look for scapegoats or people they believe are responsible for the team winning or losing, whatever the case it happens.

Keeler > Cadman(just) >>> Lemmey

Keeler and Cadman are the only talls playing at top 10 level this year, Lemmey i have in the 2nd half of 1st round and im unsure what to think of Scully, his story from my PoV is interesting, Scully was terrible last year, so much so that i didnt think anything of him, he played ruck for SA and was embarrassed by his opponents, maybe why he hasnt got a game in the 1st 2 games this year?, anyway was made aware early this year that he had improved a lot and was playing forward, so watched some of his games and it seemed he was just playing on guys so much shorter than him it was his height advantage more than anything, but i was impressed with his improvement to at least perform like he did, he also seemed to move well which indicates he could be a more valuable option when he fills out?, he got a lot of hype when he was averaging 7 goals a game(rightfully so), then he got a real test playing in the AFL Academy, where it seemed he finally had someone who not as tall but stronger than he was and for the first time had to deal with body contact as he went for marks, this time he dropped a few, took a few and i think went goaless missing a couple chances, then he got another chance to impress playing in a higher standard game for SA V NSW/ACT in SA, which SA lost by 4 goals, again Scully went goaless and struggled with the physical pressure from a NSW defender, not even Will Edwards who played in the ruck that game, so a lesser defender, since then he was overlooked for the SA u18s v SA u20s game and hasnt played either champs game, so im unsure whats happening there, but it is interesting imo... (during the weekend of the sa u18 v sau20s game he kicked 2.3 in the sanfl u18's i dont think he has played since then, maybe because he is in the SA squad? not sure?)

i would think a team prioritises a ruck/kpf over a kpd in a rebuild with a high pick, the 2 pick thing could work, but i tend not to focus on trades like that as they rarely happen.

5. Haw - Jhye Clark - Geelong - a competitive midfielder who can play both inside and outside to a good level, has a spark of class about how he plays
6. GWS - Aaron Cadman - GWV - talented KPF prospect, even in a below average GWV team he just shines as a talent and is also shining for VC
7. Adel - Jedd Busslinger - East Perth - tall defender who can play the defensive role or the interceptor role
8. Port - Harry Sheezel - Sandringham - clever skillful forward who can also play as well in midfield
9. G.C. - Mattaes Phillipou - WWT - forw/mid, with great hands in tight, good long handball, finds room in the forward line, good at getting clearances or setting up team mates to get clearances, but can be a little inconsistent
10. StK - Cam McKenzie - Sandringham - mid who is in their NGA and the only way they get access to him is picking him up here, which im starting to think is around his draft range anyway, so it works out
11. Rich - Elijah Hewett - Swan Dist - got better and better last year ending in a good performance in the WAFL Colts GF, has played some WAFL this year
12. WB - Brayden George - Murray - adding to their forward line with a quality forward, moves like De Goey and they would be hoping he has some of that burst potential on field at the highest level
13. Coll - Adam D'Aloia - WWT - tough inside mid, who always seems to make a midfield better within the last 2 years for SA
14. Syd - Oliver Hollands - Murray - brother of Elijah up in the G.C. he has some similar traits and is quite a good outside mid
15. Carl - Anthony Munkara - West Adel/NT - could be the steal of the draft if he has the right mindset, because when he is on he is an excitement machine as we witnessed for the AFL Academy, (having some issues in the champs)but is inconsistent so slides a little
16. Frem - Harry Lemmey - West Adel - KPF who atm is just a lead mark kick forward, but could develop in an AFL system into something more
17. Geel - Olivier Northam - Geel - a ruck/kpf who is very athletic and flexible, has been playing ruck, but last year was a kpf and if he played kpf and showed he could play well might have challenged Keeler and Cadman as top tier KPF's, i guess we'll never know now?
18. Syd - Jed Hagan - East Frem - talented hbf/mid has played well in the WA u19's team that won all 3 games against SA last year, was good in the u17s champs last year as well, 2 years ago i saw him play in the WAFL Colts and stood out as a talent then, was one of the best in the AFL Academy game playing intercepting half back as a sml defender

unlucky to not get picked in 1st round: Jackson Broadbent, Kane Bevan, Kobe Ryan, Mitch Szybkowski, Tom Scully, Charlie Clarke, Callum Verrell, Harry Barnett ect

I personally would very much doubt North would bid on Ashcroft if he's accepted the Bris F/S. The marketing value of having the number 1 pick on their list is too much for them to give up.

i just think Will Ashcroft is the best player in the draft and wanted to show that in a way, i guess you're right in that North would want the media attention that number 1 picks bring, but after their bumbling of the JHF situation maybe they dont want that kind of media attention any more?

Davo - how do you rate the talls Keeler/Cadman/busslinger vs previous drafts? Ie Darcy/Andrew/Amiss/Gibcus or JUH/Thiltrope/McDonald/DGB/Reid?

Keeler, Cadman, Busslinger are similar to - Darcy, Amiss, Gibcus, JUH, Thilthorpe, McDonald, DGB(i also think JVR should be here) a little lower down would be Andrew and then Reid from my PoV

but mostly similar quality, Keeler reminds me of Paddy Ryder, Cadman has flashes of Jeremy Cameron, i even liked him as a tall defender last year, he is a talented player, Busslinger plays more like a 3rd man in defence as a KPD similar to DGB but more physically developed, just for some comparisons(Lemmey, Scully, Barnett, Northam, Jefferson, Broadbent are also exciting tall prospects that can be had a little later imo)

I'd be surprised if we went a tall at pick 1 unless they surge into the position. If Ashcroft stays or Wardlaw is there then we'll pick them. I hear we're very interested in Sheezel too. Depending on the PP debate or future trading I think we'll look at talls a little later. I know some outsiders see the KPP stocks as short for us (and they are to a degree) but Dawson and Comben are internally rated very highly and when you have pick 1 you don't draft for needs, you just take the best kid.

Fair enough, but there's some good talls in this draft, and I don't think any of the talls on NM's current list scream elite quality. They feel like a lot of hopeful thinking.

Personally, I'd move down the draft. Trade with Hawthorn, GWS or Adelaide for an early first and extra assets.
