Background
Along with Steele Sidebottom taken from the '08 national draft, Dayne has made immediate impact at Collingwood in his short career, mainly as a forward/occasional midfielder. Winner of the Harry Collier Trophy for Pies best first year player in 2009. Nominated for NAB rising star and came 4th in that award in 2009. Member of the Pies premiership team in 2010, although probably didn’t perform as he wanted in the finals. He topped off that successful second season with a sixth in the Copeland Trophy.
Here are “Laser’s” averages for 2009 and 2010 – encouraging progress made in his second year.
2009 disposals – 17.7, contested possessions – 5.2, tackles – 2.3, goals – 0.8.
2010 disposals – 20.4, contested possessions, - 6.5, tackles – 3.0, goals – 1.0.

Season 2011
Dayne’s 2011 was overall somewhat a case of missed opportunity – not due to form rather to injury/list management. Following the Anzac Dazy clash he subsequently missed the next 2 rounds, returning in round 9 against Adelaide. During the game against St Kilda he broke bone in his foot causing him to miss the next 7 rounds.
Dayne returned in round 19 against Essendon – from there until the end of the year he produced his most exciting footy of the year. The highlight of those came in a commanding 32 possession, 9 inside 50s and 3 goal effort in round 20 against a hapless Port Adelaide. His following 4 games were all of high quality, even against Geelong he was able to return 29 quality disposals in such a one sided affair.
The season ended rather poorly for Dayne as in the game against Hawthorn he went off with some groin niggle and subsequently missed the Grand Final.
Seasons Stats
16 games, 22.8 touches, 8.2 contested possessions, 3.6 tackles and 1.3 goals per game.

2012
Dayne will hopefully complete an injury free season, touted to spend more time in the midfield under Buckley this year should see him continue to improve on his output again. He has superb delivery and is quite strong at the contest, this being his fourth year we could well see him(along with Sidebottom) take pressure of the likes of Swan and Pendlebury.
There is plenty to look forward to as regards Dayne “Laser” Beams, especially as he is just about to turn 22 – and along with the likes of Fasolo, Sidebottom (previously mentioned) along with established stars Thomas and Pendlebury the future looks rosy for that Pies midfield group.

Nice write up.

Like every pieman, I dream of what this guy could do if he remains healthy. I remember he topped a list for retained inside 50 kicks.

Like you said he was flying last year and he was sorely missed in the finals.
