Very poor form by the AFL in this situation. They are very behind the times if they don’t take mental health serious enough which is absolutely disgusting.

The challenge with mental health (unlike a physical injury) is that it can be difficult to prove.

Fair chance that ‘mental health’ is being used as a cover for players having been busted for illicit drugs abuse. AFL are probably reticent to introduce a loophole to allow clubs to offload unwanted players outside the cap.

The counter argument is that the club should have done better due diligence on those poor lifestyle choices?
True but I also don't see why the club should have to pay for poor lifestyle choices. We should only be liable for long term mental health injury which is the direct result of the football environment in which he was being paid to participate.

... Maybe we did no due diligence and were just caught up in the 'woke' moment of bringing a lost soul back to the club? pain of losing a Grand Final a month earlier by a solitary kick, and Beams seemed like the player we needed?

EFA

2. What is in the contract, did they negotiate out a clause to the effect of no work, no pay. He must have had an unconditional contract which just seems bizarre give his issues

+1

The club takes a bunch of 20 somethings, pays them a big sack of cash to play footy for half the weekends a year, the club employs a small army to poke and prod and squeeze everything out of them ...

... unlikely a judge would find that the club is not responsible.

Mental Health issues are an epidemic in competitive sports. The AFL numbers are staggering.

The AFL numbers may be staggering, but Beams is one of very few players to have sat out his contract on the sidelines and not even attended the club since his first year games. If what you say is true, then the vast majority of mental health victims must continue to play and overcome their problems.

Gleaning the numbers from that article, it seems around 20% of the current AFL players saw AFLPA subsidised Mental health professionals in 2020 (that’s around 8 to 9 players per list) and that doesn’t include Players who got help outside the AFLPA.

2019, so predating 2020's 'life in the hubs'' specific pressures.

It was back ended alright, as in we backed right up into it.

As for the AFL not allowing his payout to be off the books, if the AFL allowed that it would open a massive can of worms, Buddy Franklins mental health would suddenly deteriourate once he wasn't best 22, ageing stars from everywhere would be getting paid out too so clubs could plunder free agency.

I reckon the AFL would allow cap free payouts for car accidents, cancer and such, mental health has a ways to go.

Well, the Beams trade was a massive car crash, so does that count?

That’s exactly why mental health won’t be allowed outside the cap. It’ll be abused for sure, player gets full pay, club gets it off the cap. It’s a win/win for player and club to invent a mental health issue. Which can be anything, game day nerves = anxiety. Social media abuse = depression.

I think we need to stop blaming Beams, would anyone here walk away from 750k....not sure. He has obviously gone off the rails, football not a priority in his battles. What’s done is done he was never walking away from keeping a roof over his family’s head.

Tom Boyd did?

He had his mental issues too. I think the difference though is he remained a man of integrity, and probably didn’t piss his money away that he earned beforehand.

Seeing a counsellor doesn't mean you have a mental health problem. 50% of the population will at some stage and the number is growing as there's no longer a stigma attached.

Good point.

There have been many articles / media discussion pointing specifically to mental health being an issue. One I remember stated that for every player who comes out publicly with mental health issues, there are around another seven who haven’t gone public.

I'm surprised the AFL didn't agree to pay this outside the cap just like a serious injury given how we are now as a society viewing this as an illness. I think it could be exploited, but with appropriate medical and expert guidance there is definitely a way to establish guidelines.

A part of the whole situation I can't understand is that he gets to keep his contracted income despite not being able to complete his contracted role description. I don't believe many of us would be afforded this luxury in out current roles.

Surely Dayne see's that he is unable to fulfil the contract he was given and recognises that a settlement would be a fair outcome.

By the looks of it he'll still be a listed player next year???

Anyone?

I'd have thought that his payout would be included under our 2021 TPP but that he'd be off the list. I guess we'll have to wait and see but with list reductions it a bit of an impost if we have to retain him.
