Bit over a week away... Who is ready to shit themselves again this year? Hopefully can be just as good as DS2 was! Looks the goods so far although what made the originals so good was the loneliness and desolation, so hopefully the new cast of characters doesn't change the feel of the game.

Some people here are not fans of the demo but what's been shown outside of the demo looks to be the classic Dead Space we all know and love. FWIW i liked the demo, was there to show people the more action orientated parts, after all why would you want the demo to ruin all the scares and tension?

I don't see Visceral pulling a Resident Evil on us and forgetting that its a survival horror from all the other vids I've watched

The demo was dreadful.

Visceral had the chance to ease consumer mindset simply by bringing out a demo similar to Dead Space 2's. Start off with tense and scary, have a bit of action, a little bit of puzzle, a little bit of scares and then end on a reveal of potential huge set piece.

Instead we get action, action, action, action and more action, followed by a little more action.

As I mentioned in the gaming in 2013 thread, the game is clearly geared towards a more action oriented game.

The necromorphs are stronger, more resilient and the dismemberment means less than it ever has this time around with their several iterative state meaning you have to waste far more ammo than you should on them.

Human enemies, totally unnecessary and will bog the game down into a cover based snore fest when that happens. This was really the last game that needed to introduce human enemies into the mix. I heard the conceit they had, but it feels really flimsy.

Really, the start of the demo was where it all fell down when you're supposed to be injured, stumbling around, moving slowly to soak it all in, but if you sight up suddenly you move really fast and just zip through the environments like there's nothing wrong.

Pretty funny to see your impressions from the Dead Space 2 demo compared to this one as well Premiers04 (was looking to see what I thought - not surprised to see I was stoked by the improvements): http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/dead-space-2.744942

Demos aren't a good indicator of the final product though, hence why i posted that video (twice now and no ones commented on how it looks and plays just like DS 1 & 2 )

I wasnt a fan of the DS2 demo at the time, looking back now i have no idea why, as i love the game (still think DS 1 is the better game overall, much better atmosphere and not so much "heres a room lets just throw a shit tonne of monsters at you for a couple of minutes"), but i honestly dont think the DS3 demo was as bad as people are making it out to be, Visceral themselves have said they used the demo to show off the action parts and suddenly its OMG game is awful, no buy.

But seriously watch my vid above and tell me that isn't Dead Space.

I dont care as i'll be buying and no doubt enjoying it this coming week.

Micro transactions everywhere!

EA keep pushing the consumers just that little bit each time.....

http://au.ign.com/articles/2013/02/01/dead-space-3-has-11-pieces-of-day-one-dlc

Dead Space 3 will launch with 11 pieces of day one DLC available, offering services ranging from speeding up loot collection to new suits and weapons for Isaac.
According to Eurogamer, most of the purchasable upgrades tie into the game's crafting system, specifically the scavenger bots that you can use to salvage weapon parts and resources scattered around the game world. It's worth noting that these DLC bundles are separate from the micro-transactions in the game's weapon crafting system discovered last week.

My issues with Dead Space games have always been the lack of variety.

The games are full of action. They are pretty darn scary but they are to straight forward. Point A to Point B. You have a way point to direct you to the next room ... which is usually just more shooting. The game really doesn't give you much to think about.

The game could do with some more problem solving, puzzles etc. They didn't NEED to add cover systems and humanoid enemies. It is adding more action to an action filled game. Why not give us some extra puzzles? Some sections where you need to locate things across the ship? A few nice boss battles would be nice aswell.

The games do have some basic puzzle solving (placing things in order is easy even for the dumbest gamers) but some really hard puzzles that make you think and freak out (waves of enemies crashing after you, timers etc) would make Dead Space all the better.

I didn't mind the demo I see they are trying to show the action, not so keen on humans shooting back at you though...as long as it keeps the feel of the originals no doubt ill be staying up late again at night with the surround sound turned up :)

A demo is meant to be a demonstration of what the game is either aiming for or going to be. Is it my fault that Visceral chose to 'show off the action parts' and thus from that I get that it's going too far in the wrong way of action, action, action?

All Visceral needed to do, was create a demo that was paced exactly like the Dead Space 2 demo. Start off with tense, scary areas, move into some action, show off the improvements and a new enemy or two, finish off with a big set piece reveal and be done.

Instead, we open with a wide open area at day, with Isaac stumbling around (unless you choose to sight up and just piss bolt through to the first attempt at a scare). After that attempt at the first scare we go into a cave for 3 seconds and there's an attempt at a scare there (although I must say I didn't even notice the necro's on the ground the first time I went in as it was too dark and my attention wasn't drawn there at all, so fail scare there). We go through that and get to the QTE moment (the way he gets out of that is laughable too), then more walking around in a wide open bright area with another couple of attempts at scares in non-tense situations, until we get to an even wider, open and bright area where we face the first 'boss fight'. Do away with him, move onto the walkway above, then into the human enemies with cover arena as well as some necromorph's. Then we get the new enemy that re-animates other enemies, that's a nice fun bullet waster. Then onto more humans, more necromorphs and then we get to the drill. The drill is where we see an even more heavy action horde mode like situation. Then after that we get a little more shooty with humans and then end demo.

None of that shows me that this game is going to be any different to anything not only that I had seen prior to the demo but after playing the demo. And there was plenty of chance to show some slower, more tense moments. I don't see why I should have to seek out some 17 minute gameplay piece to be told that it's not like the demo was, because the demo is supposed to show that it's not just action and that it'll be different. It screams of lowest common denominator.

The big thing about Dead Space games, is that I've played DS1 3 times over and DS2 2 times over and every single time they managed to instill fear even when I knew what was coming up next. This demo, instills absolutely zero fear.

The bad points to this game still don't mean anything if/when there's slower moments too. The Necromorphs have changed for the worse, they're way too fast, have far too long a range of attack and the whole busting into 3 tentacles thing seems to have no consistency to it at all. And shooting their limbs seems to illicit almost no reaction half the time as well. I really, really don't like what they've done with the Necromorph's, they couldn't have made them much worse.

I also think the game looks average too. Dead Space 1 and 2 were absolutely top notch looking games, easily at the top of their class for multiplatform games when they came out and even beyond that. This looks decidedly average in a lot of spots. Maybe the fog is what really dulls the overall look, but I don't think the engine necessarily plays well to big open areas like you get several times throughout the demo. Also the necromorph's just look average and even dumb in some situations.

Brother is playing it now (damn his modded ps3) and reckons its all classic dead space so far and he's loving it.

This is coming from someone who has plat trophied the 2nd game and absolutely hates what crapcom did to Resident Evil 5 & 6 so that's good news.

It is reviewing very well.

Glad to see that it is getting glowing reviews, I have always been a fan and am now certain to buy this eventually. only thing that gets my blood boiling about it is the microtransactions; that can piss off to hell.

Since playing the demo i've slowly gone off it for now. I've went from a "must-buy" to a "wait and see what people on here say first" (yup, i trust the judgement of BF gamers). Ever since i heard it was co-op i was always a bit skeptical over it, but you know what sort of killed it for me? Fighting human enemies. Just sort of kills the Dead Space vibe that i loved over the first 2 games for me. I went and pre-ordered Colonial Marines instead. But..... I'm holding some hope out that it'll be great and i get a feeling i'll be proven wrong considering a few of the later comments in this thread. Let's wait and see.

(Isn't there already a thread on Dead Space 3?)

To everyone worried about the demo.

Tim Turi from Game Informer has his review up and it is positively glowing.

Giving it a 9.75 and declaring on Twitter that it is the best game he has ever gotten to privilege to review

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/d.../05/chewed-up-spit-out-and-back-for-more.aspx
Is this Tim Turi guy someone to stand up and say 'wow, he liked it? Must be great!' or is it just because of what he's stated? (I realise how incredibly cynical this sentence sounds and what I'm going to follow it up with - it's not meant to be like that, I just wonder why this Tim Turi guy matters in the scheme of reviews/reviewers)

Overall reviews are down for Dead Space 3. Considerably so, so far.

And I know, I'm going to use the devil in Metacritic, but it's easier than trawling through every site on my own.

Dead Space 1 had a score of 89/88, Dead Space 2 bumped up to a 90/89. Dead Space 3 is sitting on 79/80 currently. So a significant loss so far.

I was actually on the verge of buying it on the back of the IGN review (which didn't exactly give a glowing review score of 7.8 - but said it was incredibly addicting). But since then GiantBomb have given their review (GB is my go-to for reviews) and gave it a 3/5 (DS1 & 2 5/5 from GB - same reviewer) and confirmed at least some of the fears I had (the 6th paragraph especially with a lot of aspects).

There's also a generous amount of quotes from Metacritic that state that while the action is good, it's lacking in scares and tension and that those scares are generally all too predictable.
Whatever this is, it's not a true sequel to the Dead Space series. What it is though, is a decent action game with co-op elements. But just don't expect any kind of horror.
Dead Space 3 doesn’t know what it wants to be. It’s too busy with explosions and constant monster attacks to build up any tension, and thus fails as a horror game. On the other hand, its mechanics are too heavy and cliche-ridden, and the combat too repetitive, to work as an action game. And what are we left with then? A game that doesn’t impress in any of the areas where it really counts.
This final chapter in the trilogy certainly gives you your money's worth in necromorphs waiting to be dismembered, but the overall quality of the game just doesn't feel equal to the high standard set by its excellent predecessors.
Dead Space 3 is an enjoyable, highly polished experience that will fill in a lot of story gaps for returning fans. But if you’re looking to get scared, this is anything but survival-horror.

To end this glowingly positive post.:D I am probably still going to pick this up a bit later, but I'll concede that it's probably not all kinds of shit. :p It still does seem to me to be missing key ingredients that make it Dead Space.

I really hope the poor reviews don't end up in poor sales though, because this series needs to live and the way EA cut MoH Warfighter after it didn't sit with the community or critics says that they're not willing to let anything close to poor coming back in sales, slip by.

Oh and if you're wondering why I give so much of a shit, it's because I really, really, really want this game to be good. So it's disappointing when I see and get what I have from the game so far. Dead Space 1 & 2 are easily in my top games played this gen and Dead Space on it's own would be up in my top 10 for favourite series of all time too. So I want this game to continue on with what was created with DS1 & 2 and not just take on all the other action oriented tropes of the other big selling games out there.

No I completely get what you are saying, I like the Game Informer site in general. They run some video segments which he appears in (most notably their 'Replay' series where they look at old games and such).

A reviewer is always important when reading a game review, you learn their tastes. Tim Turi is a guy who loves old school Resident Evil and tends to really enjoy the survival horror genre as a whole.

I like his taste in games and as such this review carries a lot more weight with me than some of the others I've seen floating about. He doesn't have any issues with the micro transactions, saying he just ignored them. This is something which has been a slight sticking point with the community.

He's also in favour of the balance between action/scares as well.

The one thing I will note is that he is a slight defender of Resi 6, but only in the form of him saying it isn't as terrible as many make out.

Turi is pretty much THE go-to "Survival Horror/Horror guy" for Game Informer and in general. He has some cred when it comes to survival horror and seems to have a genuine love for the genre. I value his opinion.

But yeah, it still irks me no end to know that Dead Space 3 has nevertheless geared itself to action set-pieces etc. Funkin irks me hard.

Based on the comments ITT, I have decided to pick a pre-owned copy of Dead Space on the way home (obviously I have never played any of the series).

You will all be held responsible if I do not enjoy it.

You should enjoy it. I will be surprised if you don't, especially if you're a fan of sci-fi horror games.

Dead Space 1 is pretty much the perfect survival horror game. I found Dead Space 2 got a bit too actiony every now and then and couldn't recreate that same tension of DS1.

Grabbed Dead Space 3 this arvo, not playing it until it gets dark though :D
