Cheers Ed_Gein. I loved the horror focus in Dead Space 2. Don't play many horror games but Dead Space 2 had me sitting up straight and playing at generally a higher heart rate as I expected scares along the way.

DS3 has a co op mode or something doesn't it? Does that kind of take away the scare factor knowing that you have a buddy there and are not alone?

You don't have to play it co-op, It's completely optional. Although there are certain doors which you can't open which say you need a co-op partner for, but there is only a handful of them. Maybe 4 or 5 at the most. And i believe you can send someone an invite to help you do it, then boot them after it's finished to continue solo. To be honest, i only play the first chapter in co-op, haven't had anyone willing to do it with me. But apparently even on impossible, it's a breeze. If you enjoyed the 2nd one, no reason why you wouldn't enjoy this one, or the 1st Dead Space too. They're all great, but this is coming from someone who's favourite trilogy of all time is Dead Space. :D

I've been playing on hardcore. I got right to the end and ended up being killed at the area where you have to shoot the tentacles on the floating parts of planet.

Yep. Not happy. So much of my life gone.

No way you can salvage it? I got a friend that said he died a few times, but thanks to a glitch he used, it didn't wipe his save??

Oooooooh that hurts!

I tried the 3 saves only playthrough of Dead Space 2 a few weeks ago.

I got about an hour and a half in and wasn't really checking my health all that much, tried to stomp a necro that was on the ground that I knew was going to pop up and I got some bad collision wall going on so my stomping wasn't affecting it. Two swipes and I was dead...without a save.

The worst part was that I had just gone through the slowest and most helpless part of the game. So I just couldn't be bothered going all the way back and trying again.

May try again another time, but it's bloody tough to get back into the Dead Space groove again.

Haha well that's good to know - I was a bit apprehensive about DS3 given the introduction of the co op (as I really enjoyed the solo style of number 2) and EA's reputation for corrupting great games.

One of the greatest things I liked about DS2 was there were some absolutely horrific death animations - from youtube, seems to be one of the favourite features of fans is seeing all the unique ways Issac can meet his demise.

I'll probably end up getting both this and Tomb raider - just hanging out for my next pay day lol.

Ed_Gein Finally went out and bought this over the long weekend. About 4 hours in and must admit I'm loving the game so far (maybe too much as I was up to 1.30am last night playing it and feeling it at work today!)

A few thing's I've noticed so far is that the optional missions are a nice touch (haven't had a go at any co op missions yet) and gives you a bit more flexibility on how you play the game. I also like how there is now 1 standard ammo type across all weapons - makes it easier to manage IMO. Must say I was a bit surprised when I finally bumped into Ellie again, she seems to have changed in appearance from Dead space 2.

The customization of weapons, circuits etc seemed a bit confusing at first but think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Was pretty happy to get a bonus suit and gun for having completed DS2 and having Mass Effect 3.

Fun game though - and I still hate those regenerating necromorphs :D

Nice one! I'm due for another run through at some point, definitely agree that the customization is confusing at first, but once you learn how to use it properly you might end up spending a good hour or 2 in the weapon arena perfecting a couple of guns to use. :D I mainly used an assault type rifle with either a shotgun or defilbrator (that one that slams the ground) with acid damage. Anything that was a good mix between long and short range. Always need the short range one for anything that jumps out in front of you. Haha.

You're not wrong about those regenerating Necromorphs, they always get the heart racing without fail.

Not really sad about the series being cancelled (if it’s actually true and they don’t just revive it in a year or two) because they took the story in a really stupid direction, sacrificed almost all the horror/tension and made some even dumber gameplay changes to reel in the codblops/gears/mass effect cover shooter *****. Sure worked well for EA lol, didn’t even match DS2’s sales let alone half of its ‘5 million copies sold’ target. Thoroughly deserves its shitty metacritic user rating IMO.

Has anyone played the add-on DLC for DS3? Forget what it's called, but it has better gameplay/tension than in the main game, with an outdoor shipping crate area you have to move through that has necromorph Stalkers in it. It works really well, as there's a snowstorm, so you can't see much, only hear the shrieks and whines that means one of them is coming to mess you up and you don't know what direction it's coming from :D it's a fun 2 hour-ish long DLC. The story is still dumb though.

EDIT: the DLC also has some effed up moments on a spaceship involving a cult

Nice, might have to consider that - I'm currently rocking that free DLC plasma cutter I got for playing DS2 and a stock standard assault rifle (which lacks punch).

I think those necromorphs in particular are scary because you can't kill them and they keep coming plus you normally have to open a locked door which adds to the pressure :D

I thought the first game was the scariest

Being alone on the Ishimura(?)

I've found 3 to not be as scary as 2 - maybe after playing 2 (haven't played many horror games previously), I've wised up and just expect things to jump out of nowhere more haha

Has anyone managed to beat this (or any DS game) on the hardcore modes?

I gave this a go on hardcore and just don't think it's possible.

Pretty sure Ed_Gein has done one and 2 on hardcore.

Seems like too much of a grind.
