Welcome aboard Dean.

How come I've just turned on SEN and they're interviewing this Strauchnie ****head. Big footy news comes and you get them talking to the worst comedy character on Australian TV since Betty from Hey Dad.

I was convinced we had hired Connolly, so this is quite a releif. Very happy with what I've heard about him, so you won't hear any complaining out of me. I'm still shocked we didn't hire Cuddles. It's very un-Melbourne-like to not disappoint the fans.

a further statement will be released shortly but at this stage a one line statement was released saying dean bailey has been appointed coach of he mfc on a 3 year contract.

Cuddles is going to be appointed behind the scenes, this is a big day in MFC history for the first time i think made the right call. :thumbsu:

Chris Connelly likely to appointed football manager

Apparently Dean Bailey blew the selection panel away and was a runaway winner

Whilst a guy like Hardwick simply was too nervous, not quite ready it would seem

All these things i know for a fact, actually knew last night at about 7.30!:D

Good luck with your new coaches guys.

Despite what some people have been saying your list is still very good. I was just runing through your midfield for Sunday and it is very impressive. Johnstone, McLean, Jones, Bruce, McDonald, Green, White is a pretty good rotation. If they can all stay fit you should play finals net year.

Also , good luck for Sunday. :D

SEN just read a short statement from Melbourne stating he is the new coach.

Does this mean next year the club will break the AMMI and maybe Subiaco horror run?

This wasn't handled very well. They had the meeting last night and were going to announce it on Monday. They should have known that Port Adelaide would have got wind of this and cut all ties to him immediately as they did the same with Clarkson.

why is Melbourne such a joke with their professionalism.

Firstly they should've announced Bailey as coach next week.

Does this guy look like the media friendly guy that could boost the media profile for our club? i think not.

he has a lot to do for this club.

Bailey to coach Melbourne
August 31, 2007 - 1:54PM

Melbourne have announced Dean Bailey will coach the AFL club for the next three years.

Bailey, currently an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, beat current Melbourne caretaker Mark Riley, Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, former Fremantle coach Chris Connolly and Hawthorn assistant Damien Hardwick for the job.

The Demons board met for more than three hours last night before appointing Bailey.

Bailey, 40, played 53 games under Sheedy at Essendon in two stints, from 1986-89 and 1991-92.

He was initially considered a rank outsider for the job, but immediately impressed in his interviews.

Riley took over as caretaker coach in late June when Neale Daniher left the club.

Melbourne issued a short media release early this afternoon, confirming Bailey's appointment.

The Demons interviewed Sheedy last week and the other final four shortlisted-applicants, including Bailey, earlier this week.

The announcement was not expected until next week.

Melbourne put the five candidates through a game simulation exercise as part of the selection process.

After he retired as a player, Bailey became a development coach at Essendon in 2000 and joined the Power under Mark Williams in 2002.

He was involved in Essendon's 2000 premiership and Port's inaugural AFL flag in '04.

Another former Port assistant, Alastair Clarkson, was also a surprise choice when he took over as Hawthorn senior coach two years ago.

why didn't you tell us then winner?

what a toss

No-nonsense guy and a straight shooter with good footy sense. He should go ok. Takes the time to talk to supporters too, altho he can be a bit intimidating (is handy with the look;)).

because i was told i was not allowed to tell anyone else as the announcement was going to be made next week, but certain circumstances have resulted in the club making a small statement today, if you don't want to believe me then that is fine, i'm not concerned, lets just see if the connelly as football manager part of my claim eventuates shall we, that part hasnt been announced yet

Is there something wrong with this picture? I mean when the thing that makes you most happy about the announcement of your new senior coach is that they didn't select a certain bloke?

Makes sense to me. He is happy that the person he least wanted to get the job didn't. Or is that to complicated?

Yeah, I understand what he meant by it. The fact that makes him more happy than the fact the appointment was Bailey makes me think this bloke isn't going to get the fan base all cheering with glee.

You miss read it, or I miss wrote it..

Im happy with Bailey as he seems to have good pedigree, well received by the majority of port supporters who have posted on this site, Williams gave him glowing reviews and from what I'v heard/read has the respect of the Port players, was their back coach when they were a strong defensive team and has tranformed their midfield this year.

Im even happier though that Melbourne didnt take the easy option in appointing what would have been a Melbourne of old decision in Cuddles, im rapt we didnt take the choice most Melbourne supporters would have expected the club to do.

We have always taken the safely safely approach, which Cuddles probably would have been..
