i think spencer should go but maybe picked up in the rookie draft.
if scarlo went for the season egan can hold down FB and then mooney,grima, lonergan?, playfair or a tall that gets drafted could fill the 3rd tall role if needed.

i think grima should be groomed as the next tall defender and he is more than handy as a foward

I think Batchelor could get another year. He has genuine pace and played well in the games he wasn't injured. From what I read he works hard too so I say give him another chance.

Yeah, reading the VFL threads everyone seems to think he's rubbish, but in the few VFL games I went to mid-season he seemed to show a bit.

On the back of the first half of the VFL game, I'd be more tempted to keep Playfair as a back up tall - Spencer shows absolutely nothing, IMO.

Yeah there has been a fair amount of discussion on trading him but would want to be getting something in return for him as he does have some class about him even if he did struggle a little this year with form. He was also a 1st round draft pick from memory.

The last two weeks have really shown me that Hunt is our best option as a backup defender tall. He has good run and mobility and his foot skills on the run are very good for a tall.

Agreed. That's exactly what I think. I love his run from FB or HB, he is very quick for a tall guy. Much better than Spencer, imagine Spencer trying to run it out of defence all the time like S.Hunt does.
To keep S.Hunt, do we have to draft him because he'll be too old for the rookie list next year, surely?

Why did Essendon let him go? Seems the sort of player they could use.

Does anyone recall a media report on the rookie draft? Geelong had a pick before St Kilda - Geelong picked Sam Hunt and the St Kilda table said Sam Hunt? Laughed and packed up. No one was sure what it was about.

He's been very supportive of the young players, especially Nathan.

I still query Hunt's ability as a true key defender. Seems more adept at playing the looser, 3rd tall down back (essentially the same position the club seemed to have earmarked for Lonergan a few weeks ago).

I suppose you could argue he's leaning toward being the prototypical modern defender, with his rebounding from defense and all, but as far as being a true key defender back-up (which we sorely lack), I suppose I'm not entirely convinced he's just that.
