Demons Rule Draft

IF QUALITY drafting is the key to building premiership teams, this might be the next best thing to a crystal ball.

Melbourne analytics expert Stephen Gloury has developed a formula to assess the recent draft performances of each AFL club.

While the stock response from every club on draft night is they "couldn't be happier", the reality is some do it better than others.

And as Geelong came out huge winners in the 1999-2001 draft period, Gloury's analysis of the 2004-07 era points to an impending shift at the top of the ladder.

Fantastic feel good article. what a wonderful way to start the day
:)

Also in today's hun is Craw's predictions for the year ahead and it isn't pretty reading...

He has forecast more pain for Richmond and Melbourne supporters, who he tips to fight out the wooden spoon.
After doing his homework over summer training and looking at all 16 AFL teams, he says the Demons' skill level in the pre-season has been ordinary.

Lets just wait and see...

Agree it's only one person's opinion, but I'm a little worried if it's true Craw had been down to training and noticed ordinary skills. Hopefully he's way off the mark.

He could of gone to one or two sessions and watched a lot of Bartram, Bell and Cheney. Also whilst skill level is very important to being a successful side, we can improve a long way from last year just from improved speed, strength and competition for spots.

He says "his spies" told him.

How many times did those "spies" look at the Dees train ?

Did his "spies" go to training with a preconceived idea of what to expect when watching the 'back to back' wooden spooners ? I suspect it would be hard to evaluate the Demons train without those prejudices at the forefront of one's mind.

I wouldn't take too much notice. That said, I think most Dees supporters have their expectations in check.

Doesnt worry me at all - Crawf was a great player but not exactly a brain or analyst.

I presume this study factors in the weighting of each selection?

Either way I dont need any stats to tell me weve done well with Grimes, Morten et al.

I actually rate Crawford's perspective on the game. Despite playing court jester on TFS he usually is spot on IMO. He was right about the Hawks struggling last year (although first hand knowledge of your own club is helpful) and I think he is a good judge of footy players. I agree with him that WCE and Hawks will replace Essendon and Carlton in the top 8 and that Melbourne and Richmond will battle it out for the spoon.

It could be a fluff piece or there could be something to it, however if he or some close acquaintances who he rates have seen us display skills below par compared to the other clubs then I personally give that some creedence.

Schwabb was on the money the other night when he stated that our newcomers not only need game time, they need game time with each other. Couple this with the possibility of our skills lacking a little and we have a bit of a wake up call for 2010.

To be honest I still think we'll be bottom 4 so we'll have a chance for the spoon, but the fact that he is apparently judging us off training form is absolutely ridiculous.

I have heard that the Dees have been judged to be a top 4 side in the comp for training intensity, coming from people who watch all clubs train such as coaches/ recruiting personal. This means we must be doing somehthing write. Crawford just has to say we train like crap to justify picking us for 15th.

Let them write us off, hopefully we can surprise enough teams to prove Crawford wrong.

I wouldn't be too concerned at all. Same as for NMFC it's about where you're going in the future & getting games into your young guys. It's more about where you are going rather than where you're at.

The two teams are actually not too far apart in terms of young talent coming through.

It'd be great to have a Melb v NMFC GF in a couple of years.

And still nobody would be able to get a ticket without winning one of the 5000 competitions.

Was searching for something else and thought this was worthy of a bump.
