Dennis 'Army' Armfield

One thing I still don't get is why so many of us want to bring Grigg into the side yet bemoan Army for his poor disposal.

Going on the last two years, Armfield is a far better kick AND decision maker than Grigg.

It's just taking a while for people's perceptions to change.

I just hope that happens sooner rather than later. With him and Young Anderson still learning the game it could/does leave us a bit suss in defence.
How many did Armfield's man kick on the weekend?

The only errors Armfield made were in the course of taking them on (no big deal) and not bouncing the ball.

As a defender, you couldn't fault his game.

Last year, Army beat Matt Campbell pointless in a one on one with text book defending, burnt off him and hit Stevens on the run with a perfect kick to set up the sealer.

Best 22 until Browne pulls his finger out and forces Armfield out of the side.

He is one of our players along with AJ and carlos who offer a bit of grunt which all teams need.

Yes his kicking can be a little off but it is not as bad as people think.

I would play him on Gus Monfires this week and instruct him to bury him in the turf at every opportunity.

I watched the game again last night (no idea why) and I really didn't see alot wrong with Armfields game or more importantly his disposal. Sure he didn't get the ball enough, didn't do enough but he smashed Sherman throughout the game and he gave good run (when he had it) from the backline.

Sure he ran too far, once, but who cares? He really wasn't in the position to bounce as he was trying to arch his back and get away from a tackler. I'm not Armfield's biggest fan but I really don't see the need for a bashing. He is young and will only get better...

After their first season I'd agree with you. However, Army has come on in leaps and bounds while Browne's development has really just stifled.

Browne doesn't really have anything on Army, and they're after the same spot in the team.
besides pace what else do you think army has it over browne?

who would you prefer to kick a goal from outside 50?

Browne but I'd definitely prefer it in Armfield's hands coming out of defence. Browne impressed me when he first debuted but he just hasn't come on.

Seems unsure of himself when he has the footy in his hands whereas Armfield is one of our few who loves to run and carry.

They'd both struggle. Armfield is a HBF and Browne is a back pocket, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make?
browne has been training with the midfield group all year. Will only go down back if needed.Think the comparisons between armfield and anderson would be more accurate

I am a fan of Army.

You know you'll get 100% from this guy. Sure his foot skills are not great, but his pace, toughness and defensive pressure are very good.

Just needs to know his role and limitations.

leave the skill stuff to the likes of Gibbs, Judd, Scots ect...

I'd be surprised if Browne didn't play most of the season down back for the Ants. It's where he played all last year and he was playing fairly well at that.

he has been playing in the guts in all preseason games for the bullants. He is being groomed for the midfield.Anyway this is armys thread

Good to hear. He was drafted as a midfielder and it's not unusual for mids to start at either end of the ground before working into the middle as they develop. He's hard at it and if he's gonna make it anywhere, I reckon it'd be in the middle.

Browne is a better mark, better reader of the play and has surer hands. Looks more of a footballer IMO, despite Armfield having shown more at this stage.

Inexplicably, Browne's disposal has hurt him at AFL level and he was dumped - unfairly IMO - after the Magpies debacle last season. I've got a lot of belief in Browne's ability and would love to see him get the kind of support that Russell got so he can settle and develop his AFL game.

Anyway Armfield's messy style remind me of a cross between Tommy Alvin and Ron Wearmouth from the Scum - he's a real throwback from the 70s that Armfield, hopefully he can adjust his skills and footy nous to the 010's style of footy and help us smash the Bummers.

Not a bad comparison there at all.
Army certainly does have a touch of the Alvin's

I've got time for players that attack the ball and opponent at full pelt.
Given a little more time most here would like to see Army cement his spot in our back half.
A littler more skill and the wing awaits ;)

Since he was drafted to the club, Armfield's kicking has improved leaps and bounds. He also gives us some real presence in the backline, and is hard at the footy. When he's fit, he should be one of the first selected each week.
Correct. Did some fantastic work for us last year shutting down the one type of player we have always had trouble with......small forwards.

With Army and Joseph in the team I fear no smalls anymore.

His disposal has improved and while I haven't seen his efficiency rating lately, I'd be surprised if it was terrible.

Yes, he kicks some clangers.......but so does Gibbs, Judd and Murphy.

Best 22 without a doubt.:thumbsu:

Why is Browne being compared to Armfield?

Browne is competing for a spot in the 22 with Anderson, not Armfield.

It's funny the way we draw things up isn't it. I would say Anderson/Grigg, Armfield/Browne, but in reality they're all going to be competing with every other fringe player until they standup and become immovable members of our best 22.

Buddy also forgot to bounce the ball as he was running into an open goal for the Hawk's on the weekend ... it happens, get over it. The guy is 23 and has played 27 games of footy!

He also grew up playing rugby so his game sense will continue to improve (even at 23). I like his attitude and still think he has a fair bit to contiribute to our footy club. :thumbsu:

One thing is for sure Army has fire in the belly.Whatever he does he has always wanted one thing and that is to win. Not into sponsors and cars.... sports pro
